Best shooter ever in my opinion, and I played it for the first time on the PS3 six years after it came out. Everything about it, the setting, atmosphere, locations, variety, pacing, gunplay, it's all done to perfection. So many great moments. And Episode II is even better.
best shooter ever, but i hate military shooters, and don't play shooters online. so i guess im biased to good single player games.
Hey that's great, good for you. stop making very vague thread titles, that sh!t is annoying
And if you don't like it that's fine, I personally thought it was one of the best shooters ever made and I played it way after it initially released
Not only is HL2 the best FPS I've ever played, but it's the best game I've ever played. I've played through it about 7 or 8 times now, and I'm still yet to get bored of it. It's probably the only game I've played where I cannot find one fault with it... To me it's gaming perfection!
Half Life 2 is VERY overrated.
It was ahead of it's time.
But times have changed.
And by today's standards, it's pretty mediocre game.
It hasn't aged well at all.
Nostalgia sure does get the best of some people. I can't believe some people still say it's the best game of all time. It's a just another mediocre shooter.

I disagree. I played it for the first time this year and thought it held it up nicely. Better than a lot of today's shooters, I'd say.
Completely disagree. I think it's aged very well (still looks and plays better than alot of modern shooters). Mediocre? I know it's your opinion, but really??Half Life 2 is VERY overrated.

No. No, it does not suck. Not one bit. Not in the slightest. In a thousand years it still will not suck.It was all about the graphics and physics.... in 2004. Playing it now, it absolutely sucks.

I object to that. I didn't play it until 2010 and still found it to be the best fps ever made. It's aged marvelously, in terms of visuals and otherwise. Many games are still catching up to it in the storytelling and pacing department, the gunplay is fun, and the graphics are still impressive.
You played it too late. When this happens the game simply will have no impact on you today. If you had played it back in 2004 you would have seen it for how truly great it is.
Playing it now it does feel very, very dated. The graphics dont hold up, the actual detail to the world feels generic & empty compared to todays games. The animation & the shootings mechanics could be a lot better. Its definitely not perfect by todays standards.
Its still the greatest FPS ever made because no game has been able to accomplish what HL2 accomplished. You will never see a FPS game that genuinely feels like a actual story you are playing through, with the amount of variety HL2 does.
There are no levels in HL2. You play the game from beginning to end. What other shooter does that? It feels like an actual journey.
For me this generations Half Life would be Uncharted 2 & 3. While actually very different, these 2 series are examples of what i believe a shooter should & could be. Metro 2033 also reminded me of HL2 in a way.
It was all about the graphics and physics.... in 2004. Playing it now, it absolutely sucks.

try the cinematic mod from fakefactory really ups the graphics and pushes some of the limits of source
that being said TC
not everyone likes the game, i personally think it is one of the best sp fps games out there...blew my mind when i first played it, and i was really surprised about how good it looked on the system i had at the time (maxed it on a then 60usd agpx8 card...at 1024x768...i know i know..but it was native then)
besides that...its long...and has some good puzzles and the atmosphere...it was really erie...and it took me to my second play thru to actually pay attention and figure out that the human race had been sterilized and thats why there were no kids...really made me wonder what happened between hl1 and hl2 and made me really want to kick the combine's collective a** to get the human race knocked up again if u know what i mean...
the pacing the characters all of it was amazing and few shooters today can match it...other than say...SPLOSIONS!!!!!!! most games nowadays throw the story at u, hand u a rifle and say...go kill s*** for any reason we can think of...hl2...tho u had to pay attention (and this is a reason people didnt like stalker series too much) had a great story and it was told in a very non-direct way and i think its awesome if u pay attention
The game is like 10 years old
For its time it was awesome
Nowadays there's better games but it's still an example of brilliant game design and storytelling.
Notice how there's few/no cutscenes, and no protagonist dialog, and yet you still are able to understand the story perfectly.
Also notice how little filler/bullschit.
That game is hours of pure content and gameplay without the usual garbage that devs these days waste people's time with.

i object to that too. don't forget that it was released in 2004. It was kind of revolutionery for the fps field. it was since then fps games got a real fame and demand from the gamers.so please, don't compare it with bf3 or mw3. hl2 was the wonder of its own time.

It still is a wonder and a shining example of how to make a video game. It wasn't just a set piece rollercoaster, it had set pieces but they were sprinkled so dynamically and interactively into the game. It never took control away from you and had you experience everything. It was fantastic and still is
Anyone who says this game is dated or doesn't stand the test of time is an idiot, the game will always be stellar and one of the best FPS games ever made.
Lots of games have tried to copy it however have missed key points which mean that HL2 still stands out.Half Life 2 is VERY overrated.

i can and will compare it to bf3 and mw3...seeing as how hl2 is single player only...ill only compare it to the single player campaigns in bf3 and mw3...which are honestly some of the worst sp campaigns ive seen in fps games to date...

Bandwagon effect.
Why is it such a crime to say that I don't like Half Life 2?
My friends who all love Half Life 2 were so shocked when I told them I don't like that game.
I will admit that it is better than most of today's shooters, but that's not saying much. XD

get this...i wasnt that big of a fan of ff7...loved ff6 and 8 tho...never really was a big fan of zelda games either...that being said...they are immensely popular and i just dont like them...not that im doin the hipster thing...just didnt like them...nothing wrong with that...
i personally loved hl2...especially with the cinematic mod from fakefactory(really hope they make a good alex skin...tired of the pr0n star looking ones)...but i know people who didnt nothing wrong with it either

It's not wrong to dislike it, but to say that by today's standards it's not as good is misguided because the SP FPS games today are fvcking awful. Even CoD which has a better SP than BF3 is still awful in comparison to HL2

I know all about fakefactory, but I'm not even saying that its looks are its biggest problem, rather just pointing out that's what I think was its biggest draw. Gameplay wise, it's just atrocious now. I tried playing with it my brother about 3 weeks ago, and I couldn't believe just how bad it is.

That's nice.
Just replayed Half Life 2 in February. Still DAMN good. Also played through Ep 1 and got to the end of Ep 2 but Valve's stupid fetish with forcing you to drive cars in these games killed it for me.
Valve does realize the car segments are the weakest part of Half Life 2 right? Why must they be revisited numerous times throughout the games..
All in all, it was epic in 2004, and still felt just as refreshing in 2012.
As much as I love Half-Life 2, I can see why you wouldn't find it all that great. Gunplay is pretty mediocre if it weren't for the gravity gun, the other guns are ok, but the enemy AI is terrible. The pacing is a bit of too, especially with the long driving sections. The story is thin, not a lot of dialogue and some clues for the more observant eye (Granted I'm alright with that).
What makes me love it is the immersion, the atmosphere. The game makes you wonder what's going on and even posters tell stories that give clues to what happened. THe gameplay doesn't always quite come together, but when I'm playing I only really notice in a few areas. The majority of the game is enjoyable though gameplay wise. Somehow when it all comes together the game becomes brilliant, but if you take it all apart it's pretty average, to me at least.

A big reason certain games are successful is because of the bandwagon effect.
"My friend said this game was awesome! I gotta get it!"
When I tell my friends I don't like Half Life 2, they'll say things like "but it's a classic, everyone loves it!"
I replay it every year and it's always amazing, it never gets old.Black_Knight_00
You play through the same game every year? That's just weird. :P
The modern gamer would play through it once, complain there is no multiplayer & then trade it in the same week he bought it.

I'm not a modern gamer then, I still own every single pieces of gaming I ever bought/received and I still play NES and SNES games on a regular basis. I also replay the whole Splinter Cell series every year or so, I'm sure you can get behind that. Please Log In to post.
