Fairly old, but didn't see it posted. As of today, the Heroic map pack will be available for free, with an upcoming Legendary pack scheduled for April 15th, according to this Bungie news update.

Aaaand...that's it.

I think it is funny, they did this with Halo 2 as well were you could buy the map expansions or wait a few months and get them for free. Works for me. I'm patient.

I think it's probably the best way to release the map packs. It seems that enough people will pick them up right away so the developer gets some kind of return on the time and money it takes to make the new maps and for those who don't want to pay extra for the maps then they can wait for them to become free. I'm impatient myself so I usually get them right away, at least for games like Halo and Gears of War. I can't wait to get the new maps on April 15.

I'd be pissed if I bought the pack a day before it was free.

I'll probably DL it at some point. I've barely even played Halo 3 online. Played the crap out of the Beta and kind of got my fill, so by the time the game hit I just didn't care. I'm also more into Call of Duty 4's multi-player, so if I play an online shooter its usually that.

From 1up, the last of the three maps available in the Legendary pack will be Blackout, a remake of Halo 2's Lockout. This is the Bungie news update.

What's the fictional setting for Blackout this time? Its predecessor, Lockout, was set on a Forerunner installation.

PR: The setting is a UNSC Antarctic weather station with the completely arbitrary and stupid number z/41, it means nothing. Until the fans write some fictional significance into it and we eventually have to reverse engineer it into our canon. Thanks a lot, fans.

Venezuela is very nice this time of year.

BL: Its predecessor, Lockout, was set on a Forerunner installation. This time around we thought it would be cool to see what a human version of this same map would look like. So we created the fiction of it being a human weather station in the middle of frozen nowhere.

AM: It's a UNSC research station set in the Arctic, and I am pretty sure that this is also where all of the R&D on military grade Otter Pop rations took place. Early on I thought it was going to be an oil derrick, but that changed over time. We have some cool racks of glacier core samples, Doppler radar and other pieces of research gear strewn about, which makes for a nice touch - and when you look up to see them make sure you notice the beautiful Aurora Borealis in the sky. There were other, more outlandish settings done in the concept phase, but we'll keep those secret as you never know when we'll dig into that bag and pull it out for a future project.

More at the jump.

Wow Blackout is just like Halo 2's Lockout, probably my favorite map in that game. It brings good memories, though I've played a game match last week :P I haven't played Halo3 in awhile, as I will be downloading the Heroic map and probably purchasing the Legenderary Pack, though right now its alittle impossible being that my console is in a coma :P and going to have to wait for a few weeks to get it back.

I keep hoping they come out with a single-player expansion instead of just deathmatch map packs full of remade maps.

I'm so glad I didn't waste money on a free download.
