As if things weren't bad enough already, more bad news just hit owners of XBOX 360 without hard drives: Halo 4 will require a mandatory 8 GB install to access the multiplayer component, meaning users will either have to buy a hard drive or a compatible USB stick, though microsoft seems to imply a HDD is the only way to obtain an "optimal experience", which sounds like memory sticks may not be an optimal solution.

Prepare to shell out an extra 40+ bucks boys.

Halo Coop have always required HDDs, but this is beyond ridiculous. MS has been selling the Arcade since Day 1. It's been the cheapest option available since Day 1. Just wow.

Also arent the xbox HDDs overpriced as f*ck? I was looking to buy one a couple of years ago and all the new optoins were like $80-$100.

XBOX hard drives are pretty much $1 per GB, which is ridiculous

I didn't see anything there about a "mandatory install". All I saw is you'll need a hardrive or 8 GB flash drive for multiplayer. It's been this way in Halo for a long time.

Im an idiot. I see that they are allowing USB drives this time. I bought a 8 GB USB drive to play Halo 3 coop but it specifically wanted a HDD.

You can get a 8GB USB for really cheap. $10 at walmart? So im ok with this.

Which would be fine, but they seem to hint that flash drives will not be optimal. Hard to tell.

As a 20 GB Xbox owner, I have needed to upgrade for a very long time and this basically forces my hand to do so. If they don't put out a limited edition console for this game, I'll simply buy the previous Reach branded console!

Come to think of it, they probably will have Halo4 branded console. Instead of forcing Kinect , MS should include larger HDDs on the core models.

It really doesn't matter if it's mandatory or not; people are still gonna do whatever it takes to get the multiplayer. Which really means that people will go around, trying to find themselves a flash drive or hard drive and buy it along with the game just to play multiplayer. Either way, MS will be seeing a lot of money rolling their way!

I don't think you understood my post. While i don't know what "mendatory" means, a "mandatory" install means you -have- to install the game. OP said "Halo 4 will require a -mandatory 8 GB install- to access the multiplayer component." There's nothing in that xbox.com link that says an install is required. Just that you need an 8 GB USB, or a hard drive. Again, its always been like this since Halo 3.

They've been selling the 320 GB HDD for $149 at my local Wal-mart for the longest time.

First of all, no. It has not been like this since Halo 3. Halo 3, ODST and Reach required a HDD ONLY if you wanted to play online Coop. You were allowed to play the competitive multplayer regardless of whether or not you had a HDD. I have an Arcade, I went through all this.

As for why the HDD or the USB might be needed, why do you think they want us to have at least a 8GB flash drive or 360 HDD? Just so you can make love to it?

Ok, yeah, I was wrong, and I concede to you. Just read a post by a 343i person that confirmed it was an install. Just thought it was weird that they don't just outright say that you have to install it. Otherwise dumb people like me get confused :P
