Am considering buying an XBox. I see there are a few Halo games available.

Do the games run roughly in sequence or can I buy any game?

I believe if you were going in order, Reach would be first, but I may be wrong. (I'm not talking in order of release date)

I think its (from first to last)

Reach

ODST

Combat Evolved

Halo 2

Halo 3

Please correct me, I think I'm pretty wrong.

Mostly correct but ODST is set during the events of Halo 2, so a complete timeline would be: Reach Halo CE Halo 2 (up to the ending of Metropolis) ODST Halo 2 (from the first Arbiter level forward) Halo 3

The Halo trilogy is a set, and while you could basically play any of them, it would really be best to play them in the right order. However, Reach, ODST and Wars are set outside that main trilogy (for the most part).

Well TBH Halo 3 and 3 aren't direct continuations either - there's a large gap between CE and Halo 2 that only the novels tell about for example. Reach and ODST are definitely part of the same timeline even if they feature different protagonists. Halo Wars is set decades before the events of this 'main' timeline so it's more of a stand-alone game, story-wise.

Thx much for the timeline. As the game would be for an young teen, he may not care about carefully following all the games in order. The last 2

Halo games may be the way to go. As long as its not serious enough for example as reading The Hobbitthenskipping right to The Return of the King.

I'd probably start with Halo: CE (1) just because it was the first game in the series and will make the most sense, if he can deal with outdated graphics. Skipping the older games is not serious per se.

If you plan on getting the first or second Halo then get them for the PC because I heard they can still be played on-line.
