I think this is the best place to ask - are there any current gen games that may be regarded as hardcore as... well lets say NES games like Contra or Battletoads, etc.? By current gen I mean since 1998, and I am not talking about those which are blatantly tough and not fun (FBI Hostage Rescue), but those that are challenging and enjoyable simultaneously.

TimeSplitters 2 caters towards any FPS fan who seeks either a decent single player challenge or multiplayer fun. The MGS series on the hardest difficulties is more than a worthy challenge too. I know what you're getting at though. Games these days whilst fun, aren't generally as challenging as games of the yesteryear. It's more about creating an 'experience' rather than a challenge these days. A shame really...

I prefer an experience over a challenge on just about any day.

Everyone to their own I guess, but I prefer the challenge. With many games today there's little sense of achievement when you complete them. They feel more like interactive story books. Thankfully online gaming addresses the balance a little. You're always likely to find a challenege against human opponents.

There are not as many, the games you mentioned as hardcore depended on what you asked us to not use to answer. Ramped up fake difficulty and bad level design. I am not saying battletoads was bad,but the speeder level which is just about memorization is a prime example of oldschool games using things to make the games artaficialy harder. So I have always found this question to be sort of a red herring.

Any game can be a challenge if you crank up the difficulty but some good ones are...

  • Ninja Gaiden Black/Sigma/2
  • Devil may cry series,especially 3.
  • Midnight club L.A was suppose to be really challenging.
  • Fear on Extreme
  • Fear Files on Extreme
  • Perfect Dark Zero on Dark agent.Really hard game,No health regen,no shields
  • Call of duty series on Veteran....Your in for a huge challenge
  • Rainbow Six vegas and Vegas 2.Tactical based single player and multiplayer
  • Graw 2.
  • Socom Confrontation
  • Warhawk.
  • Street fighter 4

I'd consider Counterstike to be pretty hardcore.
