Seriously, what does it take for a gamer to be labeled hardcore??...

I myself can only assume that it's a gamer who is deeply devoted to playing games no matter the rating, the review score, the platform, or the genre.

I just classify myself as an advid gamer; nothing more and nothing less.

If anyone can shed any light on this please don't hold back...

~-~It depends how deep you get into games. If you play simple games for a little while just to kill time then your casual. If you play games to really have fun and put more concentration and time in it then you're hardcore. Bioshock is a good example of a hardcore game. You don't just play it for a little while only half thinking about it. You get deep into it trying to really think your way through things. It also takes a bit of emotion as your moral comes into play as you decide rather or not to kill the little sisters to survive. Mario games are different. All you do is go from left to right and you don't have to really get into it or think about it in order to enjoy it.~-~

Understanding all the intricacies of gaming, being able to discriminate between a good game and a bad game, and just literally saturated in the world of gaming.

I reccomend reading this thread. It has a long drawn out argument about what people consider casual and hardcore (as many people have different opinions and views on this). Its a good read I think and a discussion I thoroughly enjoyed. I do not however wish to repeat myself so you can find my rather lengthy opinions on what constitutes what in that thread. In short, people who live and breath video-gaming in terms of the interest and passion they have for the medium as well as their appreciation of it is what makes somebody a hardcore gamer.

Hardcore can be just very into games but sometimes it goes darkside and you don't bathe for weeks on end, never leaving the house save to restock on food which you barely eat anyway as the game must take precedence.

On the definitions of casual and hardcore, yes it's a relative term to each individual however there are generally accepted definitions that, although are not airtight, provide a good basis for talking about the subject. A casual gamer being he who plays mostly in social settings and mostly games that are popular, have some connection to real life (FPS, sports, racing, ect), and does not possess much knowledge of the industry. Hardcore players would typically be the opposite of those (plays single player games as well, appreciates a larger variety of genres and has knowledge of the industry)

There are countless words and definitions in our language that are not set in stone, we use the generally accepted meanings as the most reliable and eventually those become set in stone. If everyone followed the logic "because there is no set definition the word shouldn't be used" then english language would cease to evolve.

This question is never difficult to answer.

Anybody who loves games is hardcore. Plain and simple. How much time spent playing is entirely irrelevant.

I would say that playing over 10 straight hours a day which some WOW Players do is pretty hardcore but that's just WOW Hardcore not overall Gaming Hardcore.

Being a hardcore gamer I suppose would mean not quitting a game that your playing until you beat it and if it was a good game then you beat it again on harder and if it's a long game with plenty of secrets to uncover like Final Fantasy X then you do them all for like 200 hours Like I admit doing lols :X.

Well, I'll say anyone with over a thousand posts on a gaming forum is hardcore? It also depends, on system wars and the PC board it seems that only PC gamers are hardcore. They might be right, spending a near thousand each year to play games.

But I'll go back to my first idea, that anyone that posts in any game site forum is hardcore.

From my experiences a hardcore gamer is someone who have no control over the game they're playing.
