I went with New Super Mario Bros., call me weird. =/ Those new power-ups seemed more like power-downs to me(the Mega Mushroom put aside, and the Mini Mushroom emphasized...XD), and those jelly mushroom levels disliked me. And the music grated me.
Hmm...well, actually the hardest one IMO was Mario Bros. The lost Levels/The REAL Mario Bros 2.

Yeah, that is the only one in that list that I did not beat before I was five. Now that I think about it, I don't know if I ever beat it. Without that one I still think the US Mario 2 was the harddest so I guess I'll vote for two either way.
The hardest would be "The Lost Levels" (Super Mario Bros. 2 in Japan) The hardest of the European/American versions I ever played was Super Mario bros. 2 (Doko Doki Panic in Japan)
All of them aren't really problem to me including lost levels. I'd say smb2 because I got stuck in the Eqypt level with the vases and didn't feel like returning when my save got deleted.
I selected Super Mario Bros. 2, but I hadn't picked it for the American SMB2 with the vegetable picking. I picked it for the Japanese version, known as The Lost Levels which was featured on Super Mario All-Stars on the SNES, Super Mario Bros. Deluxe on the GBC, and is currently a downloadable game on the NES section of the Virtual Console. It is without a shadow of a doubt, the most difficult 2D Mario game that's ever been shown on this green earth. They definately had cause to throw in a continue feature.
