In the past there were certain games you could always count on to get at least a 9 though usually they would get rated as a 10. However I've noticed more and more that lately a lot of high caliber games are now being rated 8.5. I've seen it most recently with Final Fantasy XIII and Heavy Rain both games raking in 8.5 scores. At the same time MW2 and Halo ODST managed to get a 9.0, so maybe it's just that they really like FPS's. Either way if they are being tougher with the ratings then I would think such a trend would have to be attributed to sports games like Madden and NBA 2K10 with an emphasis on being much tougher with their ratings. Anyway what do you guys think?

I have a few "contacts" who happens to work in the industry and they say that this statement is truer than many believe. They have never explicitly said that this sites are paid to give good reviews, but I have been told that if a game gets a certain review a site is likely to be contacted and ask why the game was scored poorly. Many times ad revenue is at stake for poor reviews. Imagine how much GS could potentially lose were it to give a game like MW2 or Halo a 7.0 or lower and Activision were to pull ads from the site.

Judging from Halo and CoD...I wouldn't say "Strict" is the right word.

I tend to find that GS gives more generous scores at the end of the year then at the beginning. Also it could be that if a great game comes out around the same time as other great games they bring each other down in comparison whereas ODST came out the very end of summer. If nothing else good had come out around that time then then by comparison ODST would have seen like a great game. Butt this is just speculation. Its confuses me sometimes how certain games score higher then others. I doubt they have a concrete standard of grading.

Gamespot is still gamepsot to me. They give drivel like MW2 a 9.5 and they typically either don't review a PC game or they give it a lower score even when it is the better version. Business as usual as far as I can tell.
