What happened to gamespot giving 10's? Back when maybe there was one every two years showed which games were really must buys.

Yes games are getting much better and much more value, but then the ratings need to get much harder, yes GTA IV and MGS4 are great games, but honestly i can't say they are as good as OOT, CC.

I guess these kinds of threads are to be expected, but, two really amazingly good games got released close together. It isn't like Gamespot just flipped a switch and said, 'well folks, from now on we've got to give out 10.0s like there's no tomorrow.' ...and while you might have a certain nostalgia for Ocarina of Time or whatever game that 'deserved a 10', that doesn't mean that games haven't evolved and gotten better since then. MGS4 is a classic. I'm only 4 hours into it, and I know that it is a game for the ages.

No I don't think 10's have lost their value I think it's great to see deserving games getting a 10 because it shouldn't be something that is unobtainable because there are so many minor technicalities that will always keep something from being absolutely perfect. In fact there have been some games that I felt should have been given a 10.

I think in general games are just getting better , and will continuously due so , i wouldn't be surprised if we saw around 2-4 more 10's on gamespot before this current gen is over.

A 10/10 is just like a 5/5 stars. It can be given out to those things that truly deserve it. Sitting on it and never using it just makes the next score down on the list the "top" score and so on making a huge paradox.

I give out 5/5's like candy to games that truly deserve them and have lots of them. I base my ratings of the merits of the game itself and not how it compares to other games on the platform, in the genre or series which makes there no way that "standards" can influence a score thus making it purely about the game's quality.

Not enough people/places use 10/10's, 5/5's, 100%'s or 100/100's... they tell people "play/see this thing RIGHT NAO!"

yes, 10's have indeed lost their value, GTA 4 should be re-reviewed.

What would be your reaction if CC, OOT, and Soul Calibur released within a few months of each other? Would you then say that those games shouldn't have gotten 10's either? A 10 score is given out if the game deserves it, regardless of how close together or far apart it is from the last 10. It just coincidentally happens that two games released close to one another. It doesn't diminish the value at all. You could argue that the developers of GTA4 and MGS4 paid off the reviewers, but they got good scores across the board, so that is a LOT of money they would have had to fork out... The user scores will confirm whether the editor reviews were accurate or not. There's no way Konami can pay off users for reviews. It's also possible that under the old GS scoring system, MGS4 (and GTA4) might have scored 9.8 or 9.9 but got rounded up. My MGS4 score prediction a few months ago would have been 8.0 or 8.5 most likely, with a small possibility of 9.0. I was admittedly not expecting a 9.5 and 10.0 was out of the question. But I haven't played the game, and I'm extremely hyped now. For those who want the game but don't own a PS3 yet, I would suggest buying the 80GB MGS4 pack from Walmart. It will cost $499, and you get an 80GB PS3, Dual Shock 3, and MGS4. But that's not all.. you also get a $100 gift card at Walmart.. so that is like paying $399, which is exactly what you would have paid just for a 40GB PS3 alone! Extremely good deal, and if you're still sitting on a PS2 and have not bought a next gen system yet, don't pass it up. For $400 you get a PS3 with backwards compatibility and a blu-ray player, and you can play MGS4 and GTA4, two 10 scoring games, and soon Resistance 2 and LittleBigPlanet. Now is as good a time as any.

I have to strongly disagree with you there. Games don't get better. They merely change over time.

No, they've just changed along with the ranking scale. 10 is called "Prime" now, not "Perfect." It's much more realistic, to be honest.

I agree. And I think Gamespot has sadly lowered the bar.
