Ok well we all know about the newest GTA4 news...the games been leaked.

theres even a petty l33t roxxor who is actually streaming the game as he plays....he got to be amazed at seeing the game in person for real for the first time ever.....so why not ruin that thrill for others right? for the record im not gonna spoil it for myself.

but heres my question...what are the ramifications?

how will this effects not just future rockstar releases, but games releases in general? this is probably one of the biggest game releases in current history...even bigger than halo3.

so how is this all gonna shake out? what should they do to this hacker if hes caught? whats fair? its one thing to pirate the game, but to then try and ruin it for everyone....thats just petty and selfish.

lets hear some thoughts....

No one is trying to ruin anything for you...It is your choice to look for leaked videos, it is your choice to click and watch them. Piracy has always been here and will continue. Every major game is leaked before the release date. This is nothing new. And no, leechers have not gone too far. If something is available people will take it. Want to get rid of the problem? Track down the person who leaked the game onto the internet...the place to look is prolly rockstar itself.

is any one forcing you to watch it? nope? didn't think so.

also for all i know whoever it is could have bought their copy early. Pirate? Hacker? What's that to do with anything?

all R* can do is try and locate the leak and do something about that.

It's not the first time this has happened - people leaked Half Life 2's code as well. Just not that big of a deal to me. I don't go looking for spoilers at questionable sites so it won't be ruined for me.

i preordered my copy the second it was announced, and im not looking at any real info on it until then. everything is leaked early. music, games, movies, even books! sure they go too far, but what can we really do about it? once you introduce the human element to any situation the potential for corruption is there. we can't even keep our police and government on the up and up, how are we supposed to do it for video games?

im not trying to belittle your argument or anything, i just have no real solution.

well clearly i havent looked at the spoilers, so lets not digress int a thread about looking at the video....

this is more about what this means, when compared to the magnitude of the launch title.

half life 2 was a great game, but it doesnt have the media attention and market value of a gta title...especially GTA4

ok so weve now heard from two people who are most likely downloading the game illegally....anyone else?

Escobahr

If you want a discussion, you can start by not making accusations of what others as done in this fashion, as it's unfair, and to a degree it's trolling, when the people you're referring to are simply stating truths:

1. Most all major releases end up getting leaked like this in some capacity.

2. Even if someone is streaming themselves playing the game online, they aren't 'ruining it for everyone,' unless they were doing it in a fashion where /everyone/ is forced to watch them. This isn't the case, and it's voluntary to watch the leaked gameplay, so you only ruin it for yourself if you watch.

The main matter is, yes, it is a problem to some degree, but I don't think others see it in the same light you do, especially since we can't do anything about it in our position other than ignore the people who do the leaks, and try to avoid being spoiled, if that's the main issue.

Same thing happened with Halo 3 and will happen for most large releases in the future. There's no effective way to stop it and I don't see the problem anyway. If people manage to get their hands on the game early it's not their fault.

Like others have said its not as big a deal as you think, it happens all the time in every form of media. I'm sure Rockstar knew this would happen. You don't ship a game to stores a week ahead of time and not expect a leaked.

This game will sell so many units it won't even matter how many people go through the trouble of pirating it.

Piracy is a major problem, but this doesn't belong in the same category. It's more like overinformation and "me first"-ism.

Gosh youre so right. I have an opinion thus i must be one of those crazies that download games and laugh at people like you for going to a store and spending your parents money on a game that you wont even have the decency to pass.

imagine your watching CNN....and there are several pundits who are brought on to discuss campaign corruption. imagine if each pundit said "hey politics are corrupt ....its not gonna change so why even discuss it" what would be the point in watching that?

well thats exactly the attitude some of you have. if the content of this thread is so painfully pointless, why did u even post a response. if u dont feel like participating in an open dialogue in an intelligent manner....then why even waste my time and yours?

so far ive been derided for even thinking about this issue, and belittled by those that feel breaking the street date/releasing the footage is no big deal at all.

if anyone actually cares to discuss the issue at ahnd...please do

The problem is that matters like this /have/ been discussed in the past...when it happened to Half-Life 2, Halo 3, and other games.

This isn't the first time this incident has happened, it's not going to be the last time. Is it a big deal? There are aspects of it that are a big deal. The problem is that you come in here, throw accusations at those who have an opposing opinion to yours, then act like a victim when people continue to have an opposing opinion on the matter.

My question to you is this - What are you thinking that should be done as a result of all of this?

You want an intelligent conversation? Fine. Nothing should be done about piracy becouse actions against online piracy in any form would have to involve getting personal and confidential information from the culprits ISP, which is against the terms of use you probobly signed when signing up for an internet service. Thus even tracking down the person from whom the leaked game originated would infringe upon the rights of some customers. Also I am opposed against pretty much any form of internet censorship since that would go against many freedoms that everyone has a right to. If companies/authorities cared enough or put more effort into stopping such things as child porn or even leaked games and movies they would look for the source and act before it releases the materials onto the internet. Many games that are leaked onto the internet are not uploaded by some random bloke but usually a group that has done this before and will do it again.

if you feel that people disagreeing with you is belittling you, you wont last long in many discussions. the fact of the matter is you are acting like this is something new, with no offer of what to do about it as a solid topic of discussion. the ramifications are the same as they have been in the past, its just that its not really anything new that has some of us wondering what you really want to say on the matter?

the point of ruining it for everyone isnt really true as others have mentioned.

I just don't see the appeal of this game or the need to search for spoilers or other people's need to spoil the game for others. it was like when harry potter came out people were spoiling the ending for others...so lame.

I think we're missing the point of the discussion here. What are the ramifications? What will piracy mean for the industry? When caught, what punishment is appropriate for piracy?

To truly see the impact piracy can have, we need look no farther than the disaster that has afflicted the anime dubbing industry. Already, prices have gone up, major players are closing thier doors, fewer titles are being liscenced and general quality has gone down. Piracy is no problem for monolithic industries like the Hollywood movie industry but it just kills the little guy. Video game piracy has the potential to cause serious damage to small, independent game development firms.

Discuss.

Umm ok Anime on dvd prices have always been high. The price is not really rising due to the fansubbing community. You want to know the real reason? Do some research HINT: It has something to do with how much japanese anime studios want for their shows. Anyways Dubs have always sucked. Bad choices of voice actors, bad translation, in some cases censorship and changes made so the american audience doesnt have to learn anything to understand an aspect of a show.

I don't even know why they care... their sales of the game are going to trump and destroy any amount of piracy that could be fielded against them. I think the only reason they seem to be up in arms about it is because it came out early, if it had come out on time they wouldn't have cared how much piracy had taken place... because it takes place with every game and even more with the more popular games.

Once Rockstar is bathing in cash they won't give a damn anymore... and if they do, well they should stop whining and give more incentive to all the pirates to buy their game and prevent future leaks.

No one is attacking you because you brought up the issue. You asked us what the ramifications were, and we simply answered the question. There are none. Thats all we're trying to tell you. Its unlikely that they'll find the pirate and when the next GTA games comes out the same thing is probably gonna happen. From a financial stand point, San Anadreas is bigger than GTA4. Pirates got their hands on it a week before retail and spoiled plenty about the game... no one within the industry even said a word about it. Uncensored Manhunt 2 is released months ahead of retail. Again, no one says a word. And here it is happening again with GTA4...
