Well, I don't think people tend to search for old crappy games.

I think there could be several explanations. It could be that back then, there were more people who were in it to make good games, not money... and well, back then the standards were being established, somewhat, while now we have standards we look up to and legends to remember, you know?

It could just be that games today aren't as good, compared to games back then in their time.

I really do think now it's all about pumping out games for quick cash. We're seeing shorter games (it took me what... 6 hours to beat lost planet?.... @ 49 bucks). We're seeing rehashed and crappy sequels. Even buggy releases.

I'd just like to urge gamers not to support crap because it's the only thing out there... read reviews and try before you buy, because spending money on crap means more crap is produced further down the line.

There are a few possible reasons. Firstly, games are no doubt better now on an objective level, but it's much harder for them to have a fresh and new experience now, being groundbreaking is extremely hard. Secondly online is now a much bigger component of games. This is hard to factor into reviews as only through time do these games show their worth (GRAW for example) and editors have no one to play with and absolutely no comuntiy to play into (making for a very sterile game experience). Lastly the ratings have just got tougher, if every game is a 9.8 then things start to loose meaning, so things may have tightened up to let the true greats shine. And lastly I think gamespot is less forgiving, for a game to score high it really does have to be a complete and near flawless experience. Look at Twighlight Princess, and 8.8 because it was old and had shoddy presentation elements. EDIT: Also as games are judjed by the standard of their platform thing get a little harder. To score high you must push the boundaries of your host platform, something that is much harder to do now, as it requires more consistency, depth, imagination and very importantly, it requires alot more time and money

I agree with pretty much all of the above.

I think the games of today are compared to their predecessors, and tend to come off worse. Whereas back in the day of the PS1 and N64 that was when the standards were set. Just as CodeZebra said.
