Have we grown up as gamers? Need we more games designed for 20 and 30 year olds?

I mean, we were all under 20 once. No offense to all under 20 here on Gamespot.

But what I mean is, When i was a teen, I used to like Mario. I used to play Super Mario World on the SNES. I don't like it anymore. I won't even get the Wii or DS versions.

I am into other games. So, should there be new IPs and franchises, designed for former people who used to play Mario, but, prefer other things now?

No I'm not saying there are no new IPs. But platformers should be better designed.

I'm a bit confused as well. Just walk into any store that sells video games or just browse through Gamespot's reviews and I'm sure you'll find something that caters to your more mature taste. Check out LA Noire, that's just around the corner and is full of mature themes.

I can't get a game that's coming out next month, can I? This was meant concerning the discussion in the first post. If you all can't comprehend it. It's not my fault. LA Noir is not a platformer.

Platformers have been neglected, period. Whether they're designed and catered to adults or the younger audience. But as far as mature-themed games and games for adults; they are out there. Plenty.

If you are looking for a realistic style platformer for older gamers, check out the Prince of Persia series.Platformers are a little rare outside of Nintendo, and Nintendo likes to make them cartoony and E rated. But others do exist, PoP is great example in my opinion.

i guess, idk i didnt get platformers from the first post but mirrors edge (i know its not technicly but still has the mechanics) um ther was another 3d one where the dude is half monkey escorting some chick around i think it got like a 8.5 on here, super meat boy,

i do believe that platformers have always been directed towards a younger audience from spyro to crash, mario, sly cooper, jak and daxter, ratchet and clank, can you define an adult platformer for me? maybe i could narrow it down but right now i dont think there is one or ever was

Yeah, I'd say Mirrors Edge is a platformer. It's similer to Prince of Persia but in first person. Most people don't call PoP a platformer either though actually. But it certainly seems like one to me.

Apparently the average age of a gamer these days is 38... if anything, we need more games that appeal to us middle-aged gamers...

Depends what type of average. In terms of median average, 38 sounds about right. In terms of mean average, however, it would be somewhere in the 20s. However, if you mean arcade or PC gamers specifically, then I wouldn't be surprised at a mean average of 38 for these categories.

A game title grow up along with its fans from E(everyone) to M(mature)? I don't think we've any. Well, maybe Alice game:

  1. Alice in Wonderland (E rated)
  2. American McGee's Alice (M rated)
  3. Alice: Madness Returns (M rated)

Coincidently it's action platforming game with variety of puzzles so at least we've one great platforming game this year.

They are around...but just like with quality film and quality TV...you have to look harder for them since they aren't going through the same channels that cater to the mainstream masses.

Have you tried Amnesia: The Dark Descent?....how about Okami?....or Minecraft?....or Limbo?

All games that are excellent, have more unique and have more complex themes and / or game design, and are original ips.

I always find it ironic that people are always saying they want new ips and original games....yet when they are made, few actually get support....meanwhile, the same old tired sequels, franchises and cliche gameplay design continues to get bought by the boatload and support developers that take the safe route of milking franchises over those who attempt interesting risks.

A series I can think of that grew up with its fans was the first five Dragon Quest games: from playing as teens in the first Dragon Quest, to playing as young adults in Dragon Quest IV, to playing as parents in Dragon Quest V, the series was steadily maturing. The kids or young adults who were fans of the original Dragon Quest were adults or mature adults by the time Dragon Quest V came out, so the fifth game let them play as a protagonist who grows up, gets married, has kids, and raises a family (see 1UP's Dragon Quest V and the Maturation of Perspective). However, it's a shame later Dragon Quest games went backwards in this regard.

I don't think your tastes have to change because you get older, but if you buy things that focus more on the interests you have, they will have more money and desire to make those things in the future. Other than the absence of platformers in general, I don't really see this as a problem. Check out Darksiders.

You're implying that 30s don't play Mario? I think that most of the games are now designed for adults. That's why many games have movie like, action packed campaigns which can be finished in several hours. Moreover more time consuming games like Mass Effect, Dragon Age or Assassin's Creed are so easily accessible.

I think as most "gamers" get older (i.e. myself) we replace a lot of games with sports or film or tv, and we try to put there ideas into what we want in a game. I know I do. I don't play video games nearly as much as I did when I was in my teens and early twenties, but now when I do play it's all about sports games or a mind-numbing action shooter (just to take out the aggression). I'm not as interested in RPG's or long-winded Rockstar games that have 5 minute cutaways...I have fallen asleep during some of those speeches from GTA series...ha ha. My favorite game of all time is still FInal Fantasy VII (yeah, I'm old), but I could never spend that much time on a game ever again. Now, I am content to just sit and play FIFA or NBA Live or Tiger Woods golf. Any other late-20's/30-plussers do the same?

I hear you. You'd like to see more mature games, but all you see are violent games, right? Perhaps it's time you become more of a pc game player. The games have more thought outside of the game. Fortunately for me, I still love Mario--there are days I'll play snes/genesis while I have coffee in the morning--but I've recently purchased a laptop capable of at least playing some newer pc games. Arma 2 is pretty involved, perhaps too involved, and the operation Flashpoint games are not too bad.

Personally I find Nintendo games to be the most mature overall--they're timeless.

There are tons of new ip's, but the answer to your question is quite simple, old ip's sell plan and simple, it's too much of a money sink to make a new ip, especially when only 10% tops make it big.

To be honest I think the topic title is on the money but the reasoning here is not. Surely those who grew up with experiences would prefer games that match those of our youth. That doesn't mean they have to be aesthetically similar like Mario is (relatively) similar to how it used to be. I mean similar in the sense that the games embody the same design values, attitudes towards difficulty balancing, level design and so on.

This is true. Many of the mascot powered titles that have been out over the last few years have either been flat out bad or are essentially action-adventure games (even those franchises that started out as true platformers).
