Today I did for the first time. I got a refurbished ps2 slim yesterday from gamestop and it wouldn't play any games. So i opened it up, took a q-tip, and took out what seemed to be a booger that was stuck inside the laser. After that, it worked like new.

Raise your hand if you ever fixed a broken console by yourself. :)

Never have. And I wouldn't wnat to becasue it voids the warrenty. I can get a factory refurbished DS or get it repaired for free, or I may have to pay something (I haven't had to pay anything beyond $40)

I have unintentionally fixed my 360 once. The disk drive got stuck, and when attempting to load it into the box, I dropped it, which made the disk drive start working again, without damaging anything else. Lucky me.

I'm working on my friend's 360 and I think I know what's wrong with it. But, he won't let me have it if I fix it because it's his "decoy Xbox". Whenever he gets grounded from Xbox he switches the 360s and his parents never notice.

I fixed a YLOD'd PS3 using a hairdryer. It still turns on but I stuck the thing in the cupboard and bought a slim the next day. No point taking the risk, it would just do it again soon enough.

My dreamcast caught the infamous "random reset" problem, where the console would randomly reset during gameplay (as if the name weren't self explanatory enough). It wasn't a constant problem, but it eventually got to the point where the system would simply not boot when I pressed the power button.

Apparently the problem is caused by the metal contacts within the system not properly making a connection with the motherboard or whatever, so I opened up the console, and physically bent the contacts so they would make better contact. It worked and now my Dreamcast works perfectly.

My bro-in-law bought a used 360 on Craigs List for $90, all sales final. A first gen arcade edition that was known for RRODs. Well you can prob guess he used it for about 2 hours and it got the RROD. He looked up online to do the x-clamp fix and it worked... for about an hour and kept getting RRODs. I told him to cut his losses and try to sell it broken but he's determined to try and fix it. So far he's spend an extra $30 for various internet clamp fixes & reapplying thermal paste. The case won't even shut correctly anymore so I'm afraid he's done more damage that any actuall fixing, seeing as how he's not technically inclined anyway.

Yup, my friend gave me a broken PSX. The analog controller was broken too. It turns out the motor stopped working properly and when it did, the CD holder was slipping as it was loose. So, I took the motor out from the analog controller as it actually used the same motor! I replaced the motor on the console. Then I took the CD holder from my CD player - which happened to be Sony as well (but I don't think that mattered) - and installed it on the motor. Worked like a charm and I got a free PSX. Of course, I had a useless CD player after lol.

I have owned a very long list of consoles, but the only ones to cease functioning so far are 3 PS2s and 1 PS3. I opened up the last PS2 and tried cleaning the laser, removing the dust, etc. but just gave up on the console and waited for the PS3 with backward compatability. That one died about a month after the warranty was up so I gave up on Sony products until the Slim came out in 2009 and got one of those on launch. So far it is stil working but given my past luck...
