Have you ever imported a game? (If so, how often?)

There are many reasons one may decide to import a game.

Here are just the common excuses

  • lack of localization
  • better edition (steelbook, other physical content)
  • region in-game exclusives
  • early access (many games typically release in Japan months or even years earlier than the US)

Personally, I only import the Tales games. It started with Vesperia and it became a bad habit of mine. Vesperia had a crapload of new content added in the Japanese PS3 rerelease and that version was never localized. Unlike some other games in asia there's no option to change the subtitles to English so I had to play the whole game in Japanese and surprisingly it was still very enjoyable. It did helped that I complete the original Vesperia on 360 a few times before though.

Enough with my rant, have you ever imported? What was the reason and how often?

The last game I imported was Super Smash Bros. Brawl and it is the Japanese version. That was in 2008.

Unless a game is in English, I really could not bother importing it.

Demon's Souls and Contra 4 are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head.

I've imported consoles before. Both the Dreamcast and PS2 came out in Japan about six months ahead of their US release. I paid a local used game retailer to import both of those right after they came out in Japan along with several games for each. I imported Yakuza 5 recently and every time I make my way back to Manhattan there are a few import game shops I check out. Last time I was there I got Yakuza Kensen. I don't really go out of my way to import games much anymore, but I'm not opposed to buying a non US game from a local shop should I find one.

Oh, and I got an imported copy of Silent Hill 4. This was before I modified my PS2s with flip tops, so I had to remove the top cover and use the "swap" trick to get it to work. It took some practice, but at one point I was really good at it.

I don't know if this counts, but 80% of my games are imported from the UK, to dodge the terrible localized versions that plague PAL areas.

I recently imported Battletoads (Game Gear) from Ireland. The main reason was that for the N. American version of the game, people were wanting at the least $25 for the cartridge only. The only copy I found with an instruction manual wanted $50 plus shipping. The version I got from Ireland has the instructions and I only spent $27 after shipping. That's pretty damn good and the game is still in English.

Shenmue 2 for Dreamcast because I couldn't wait for the Xbox port.

The Last Window: The Secret of Cape West because no US localization.
