Sometimes, when I play Mario Kart, I feel like the game tries to troll you at the last second, like getting hit with an item when you're just feet from the finish line, and the opponent passes you. Maybe I just suck at it (:P), but sometimes I think games are rigged :P. Have you ever thought a game was messing with you in the same manner?

NFS games and their wonderful rubberbanded AI: I remember playing Most Wanted, opening up to a 15 second gap at times, only to have the AI 3-5 seconds behind me on the next lap.

Moreso Pokemon, though. Go to the Battle Tower/Frontier in those games and at times it seems the luck and AI are just set up for you to fail. OHKO moves have a 30% chance of landing at equal levels, even less two or three times in a row, yet I've experienced just that. Getting Guillotine'd twice in succession is not fun. Sometimes I feel like I can successfully predict when I'm going to get screwed over:

"Wow, that did some damage. But I should be fine, unless the computer scores a crit." *Very next turn* *Critical Hit!*

That I can agree with, I'm certain that gym leaders and boss battles in pokemon have much higher crit ratios.

I gotta go with sports games. No matter how well you do in the game, the AI always finds a way to kick your ass from start to finish. I remember playing an SNES baseball game called Extra Innings and no matter how hard I hit the ball with the bat, they opposing team would always catch the ball or throw it faster to first base before I ever got out there. So stupid!

cops: the recruit.. the AI for enemy vehicles driver 2 times faster than a police cruiser and the traffic intentionally gets in your way. ambulances will literally park in the middle of the road if they have to to stop you from catching someone.

more importantly theres a car chase about 75% the way through the game involving you needing to tail someone in the ACTUAL fastest car in the game which is this suped up msucle car from space somebody builds for you and then your best friend jacks and then proceeds to do the impossibl and DRIVE THROUGH WALLS to preform a trade paint with you while your in a cruiser with your boss riding shotgun.

so at this point you have a car about 20% faster than you going 20% faster and the traffic is trying to bodyblock you at every major intersection.

its absolute cheating

Speaking of racing games, I can remember plenty of times in NFS Hot pursuit that police just popped out of nowhere. I even had my camera showing the rear view for a good part of some races. I memorized the map, so it wasn't hard to do. Then they would just "appear." I could be wrong, though. It's been since before the PS2 came out.

PES has this thing where if you win too many season matches in a row it'll throw one or two impossible matches at you: your players are slow, miss passes, trip on their feet and no matter what you do you can't score: you hit the posts and crossbar, goalkeepers save impossible balls, your players miss with an open goal... it's stupid.

Reminds me of the wrestling games back in the day, specifically the Nintendo 64 WWE games. During the season mode, you'll win like two-three easy matches in a row, no problem. But the next two or three are impossible; they'll reserve your every move and kick your ass all over the place. In other words, they literally throw the rule book right out the freaking window! It's retarded!

Exactly. I guess they know gamers can get so good at the game they will barely break a sweat through a whole season (on PES6 i used to clear a season on 6/6 stars difficulty with all wins, 100+ scored goals and less than 10 conceded), but i wish they could find a better way to keep things challenging without having the game cheat.

Which is why I appreciate games that have the difficulty increase naturally on its own without being cheap at all, like in the case of Super Mario Galaxy. It gets easy, at first, but the challenge intensifies step by step and it's great. Wish more games would take more of this approach instead of just doing it in a way that pleases them the most and aggravates us gamers to no end.

There was a freeway racing game I used to play on Dreamcast- Tokyo Extreme, I think. Basically you would challenge members of various freeway racing "gangs" and once you beat all the low level members the gang leaders would appear. It is freaking impossible to beat them regardless of how much money you have to buy the best car and tune it all the way up- I even saw one of the bosses crash right the hell into a metal post. Stopped dead. Then I looked into my rearview and lo and behold, THERE SHE WAS! Gaining on me, and I ended up losing the match. That was the last time I played that game.

Man, I hate that! That happens to me in NCAA Football sometimes. I'll be playing as the #1 ranked team, and I'll lose to a sorry FCS team. By an unnaturally large margin.

Yep.

Some of the older street fighters are too. Sometimes on the last fight, you win the first round. Then the second round you dont have a chance. Then the final round could start off pretty good, then all of a sudden the computer beats the sh*t outa you.

It's called "Rubber Band Artificial Intelligence"

No matter how exceedingly well you do, no matter how fast you go, the AI will catch up because that's how they're programmed.

it's called rubber banding, games will have the AI go faster than they're supposed to if they're behind, and in games like Mario Kart they'll also have weapons without having to get boxes, there's even some balancing in player placement, the further behind you are you tend to get better weapons to help you get back in the lead, it's a rather frustrating joy-killing system if you ask me, games like Motorstorm also have some tough rubberbanding, but nothing too cheap, and they're fun games, I remember people complaining about Split/Second but I myself thought it was the right level of challenging to keep you on your toes until the finish line games I really hate are FPSs like COD where the enemies seem to only want to shoot at you, you can like be behind the line of fire with your friendly NPCs out in the open not getting shot yet when you so much as peak out like every enemy NPC will unload on you, even if you're friendly NPCs are near you out of cover they'll not get aimed at, it frustrates me when stuff like this happens

Of course! He He. I always thought there are games that cheated or tried to at the ending moments like in earlier versions of FIFA where all of a sudden the strikers/forwards of the other team got a second wind as time winded down.

They've got rubber band AI. It's very annoying how they can speed up to light speed to always catch you, but on the other side, they will allow you to catch them.

Seriously, it's really obvious. No matter how well you take the corners, how many extra boosts you buy, etc. they will always remain in front of you until a certain check point.

Mike Tyson's Punch Out on the NES. I would be a punch away from pulling this out and then would get beat down in a matter of seconds and lose. It's a good thing we had carpet or I would have had to replace more than a few controllers.

Just about every racing game from Need for Speed to GRID. They literally are rigged, with rubberband AI that all of a sudden start driving at impossible speeds and clipping straight through buildings if they fall too far behind.
