Hey guys, I've been having a bit of an issue recently, I just can't seem to find a game to hold down my interest. I even specifically made an account here just to ask for ideas. You see, the types of games I like to play can vary from anything but they always come down to a view main points.

-RPG

- Character Customisation

- Romance(Low Priority)

- Enjoyable gameplay

I'm just looking for something to immerse myself in to high extents. Graphics isn't an issue, I've played games from 1988 to 2017. If the story is good, I'll enjoy it.

Here are a list of games I've played previously and highly enjoyed:

  • Robin Hood the legend of sherwood
  • Conquests of the longbow - Robin Hood
  • Fable 3
  • Fable 1(Lost Interest)
  • Skyrim
  • Oblivion
  • Morrowind(Lost Interest)
  • Harvest Morn: Friends of Mineral Town
  • Mass Effect Trilogy
  • Witcher 3 (Honestly didn't enjoy this very much. Voice acting was wooden, I didn't feel in control of the main character at all. It wasn't me going on an adventure as Geralt but rather, me watching Geralt go on an adventure, if that makes sense.)
  • Mount and blade series
  • Age of empires series
  • GTA
  • Saints Row

Hopefully the list should give a rough idea of what I'm into but really, I just want a game that can immerse me in the story and action. A game that actually feels pretty enjoyable.

Thanks!

You could try the infinity engine games like Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 and Planescape Torment and their modern counterparts, that is Pillars of Eternity and Tyranny. Other good recent RPGs are the Shadowrun games and Divinity: Original Sin.

You could also try Darksouls and the other games in the series. Some people dismiss them thinking they are more action games but they actually have very deep RPG systems, a lot of customization in both appearance and build and their focus is exploration.

If you enjoyed Harvest Moon, Stardew Valley is a must. It is pretty much the same, but with a lot of content including battling against monsters.

If you enjoy Elder Scrolls, you probably will enjoy Fallout as well. It's pretty much the same, but post-apocalyptic.

That aside, there are really a lot of games you could try. Many MMORPGs and WRPGs fit your description.

Fire Emblem Awekening and Fates has a character creation as well as romance.

You can also try Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning which is a great game.

I was surprised to see Dragon Age: Origins wasn't on your list of played games.

That's my suggestion. It's one of my favorite games ever. The two sequels aren't anywhere near the level of awesome that the first game achieves. I can't say enough good things about Origins.

If you enjoyed Harvest Moon, Rune Factory is practically an RPG spinoff of that franchise. Character creation doesnt really exist though, 4 allows you to pick character sex, and you can rename your protagonist, but little more. Combatwise, it was clearly inspired by Ys. But is not quite as good as that. Still serviceable.

Deus Ex is an amazing ARPG. The new ones are still good, but the original is the classic. You get to clearly define your role in the world, and solve problems as you wish. Game also reacts to how you interact with the world. Truly one of the best games ever made.

Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines is excellent too.

Why did you lose interest in Morrowind and Fable 1 btw? Knowing what you didnt like about them can make us a lot more selective.

Dragon's Dogma has a better character customisation than all the games mentioned, along with far superior gameplay. The game is from Itsuno Hideaki sans team. The same people who made the games Devil May Cry 3 and 4.

However it suffers from quests and main game environments. If you get the Dark Arisen Edition? Jump straight to BitterBlack Isle. It's the expansion. And is one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had in an RPG. it's so good! You won't get much like that in Gran Soren (the main games map) till post-credits.

Has great replay value, interesting romance options, and arguably best combat in an RPG.

Character customization? Appearancewise, yes. Gameplaywise no. definately no.

Far Superior Gameplay? It depends on what you want, but Dark Souls, and Mount and Blade: Warband are better action RPGs against small and human sized enemies, if want to fight giant monsters, then yes, DD is the untouched king. Deus Ex, and Stardew valley, Rune Factory, Fire Emblem, Pillars of Eternity, Tyranny can all offer better gameplay depending on what one is looking for.

@ArchoNils2: Means it's a pretty sad statement when a generation of ppl who's first FO game was 3, think ES and FO are 'pretty much the same' and don't even realize Bethesda's versions were pale imitations and bastardizations of a treasured cRPG franchise.

Oh, I guess I should have noted that I meant FO 3+ and not the first two titles. With Fo3+ the statement is very much true, I just forgot the irrelevant first two titles :P

@Maroxad: Before I go on let me just state I only base this on my opinion and nothing more.

Dragon's Dogma has a lot of flaws but what it does right is character creation and combat. I wish you detailed what you didn't enjoy about the creation mode. However even if we just chat class options? Dogma is in its own league! Though if nothing needs more classes upon a sequel.

Never has playing as a mage in an RPG felt so meaningful, casting down fireballs, tornado's, or corrupting the enemy is best in Dogma. Assassins feel nimble and attack like an agile Shinobi. And Warriors are Tanks that can dish the most pain in a single strike.

I could go on but it goes without stating this is what Dogma does best and I'd need your thoughts on how it actually fails in all this.

Add to that oil, water, and other elements have a natural reasoning for how they work in the world. And how they'll aid you in combat.

But moving on. Someone recommended Mount and Blade: Warband last year and I didn't find it very enjoyable. It was good for stat-options but the actual execution was underwhelming, combat is weightless and is closer to that of a modified Elder Scrolls game (Oblivion or before). I'd rather not insult your taste but I just didn't get that game_

As for Dark Souls. . If you mean the first two; we might have a long chat to how you could possibly think that. Overall I think Dark Souls 1 and 2 are better games (overall). Yet the combat for the first two are. . Meh, it was only reasonable because of how level design added to the action. And online options kept the game going longer.

Now Bloodborne and Dark Souls III arguably have combat on par with Dogma, that I'll agree on. They really put a lot of polish behind BB and DkSIII brought a lot of that on-board.

I know what you mean. Total immersion into the game world.

Fallout games are great for that.

Dragon Age games are a must. Theyre getting old in the looks, but theyre great RPGs.

The lastest Final Fantasy game is really good too as far as immersion goes.

I'd suggest starting with Fallout 4.

Divinity: Original Sin

I'd recommend more, but Original Sin is a "proper RPG" that is about as in-line with the game you like as you're going to get.

If you like the above, you might want to try out:

Pillars of Eternity
Tyranny
Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2
Dragon Age: Origins
Legends of Grimrock 1 and 2

Morrowind is classic, and the only thing I did not like about it was the navigation. Which was really hard. No GPS in that one!

Get these games :

Xenogears (PS1)

Chrono Cross (PS1)

Final Fantasy VII (PS1)

Final Fantasy IX (PS1)

Dragon Age : Origins (PC/PS3/360)

Advance Wars (GBA)

Advance Wars 2 : Black Hole Rising (GBA)

Advance Wars : Dual Strike (NDS)

Advance Wars : Days of Ruin (NDS)

Since you're a fan of Robin Hood, I'd also recommend the Commandos series for the PC. Advance Wars is not an RPG series, but it's friggin' awesome if you're a tactics fan and enjoy fun games.

I just want a game that can immerse me in the story and action. A game that actually feels pretty enjoyable.

They dont make RPGs like that anymore, sorry. The new Tales game might be worth checking out though.

Cameron: Try to play Runescape first to identify your own specific needs for an RPG.

Kelly: Always pick a warrior

Mohamed: Find an RPG that isn’t pay to win, and also a developer who listens to their community.

Jay: Find a game that is easily adaptable

Francis: Try to play Ragnarok first to try competitive RPG.

Arwina: My advice is to find a complete game that doesn’t promise a whole set of perks without actually putting down a timeline.

Geoffrey: Buy a Nintendo

I don't know, maybe Kingdom Hearts. Anything Elder Scrolls and just about every Final Fantasy. Just depends on what exactly you want.

If you ask me, Diabo 2 and 3 were my favorite dungeon crawlers. Fallout my favorite survival. Mass Effect my favorite story and combat. And Elder Scrolls my favorite universe. And Final Fantasy my favorite mechanics.
