I have to be honest, I'm still kind of new to the genre as I didn't start until I played Dead Space on PC, but what horror games do you think hold up?

Well, even though I've been playing it since Christmas, I think Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem for GameCube holds up quite well. It's nearly eleven years old and I got a perfect mix of horror, psychological thrills, and... trolling. :P

How about you?

Judging by the horror factor alone, the original SILENT HILL holds ups remarkably well.

I'm sure most anyone would still find it creepy as hell nowadays.

PROJECT ZERO II for the PS2 or XBOX is another excellent horror title.

I was impressed by how they managed to to make Silent hill such a creepy game on the PS1 , thats top notch design right there. Resident Evil was also creepy , but in a different way.

Yeah. KONAMI was in such top form back then. They had an awful lot of talent and made great games for practically every genre.

Now 10 years later they don't even make most of their new games. It's really a shame.

I'm going with the obvious here: Resident Evil games. I still love them. They're perfect for horror fans that grew up with video rental places nearby. They have that same fun vibe to them.

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth for Xbox/PC. Though it may not be as well known around the gaming world, it is still a decent psychological-horror thriller.

You could get into the Resident Evil series with REmake for the Gamecube. 2 and 3 were never remade so they might seem like a step back after that but I'd still start with REmake to get into the story/game play. The Fatal Frame and Silent Hill series also hold up well imo. And it's not legacy but Amnesia: The Dark Descent for PC is definitely worth checking out.

Silent Hill 2/2X and Eternal Darkness. Out of all of the survival horror games, these two were the best.

Probably not, but I do because it's a creepy game that has fairly limited ammo for the most part and it's not a typical fps game.

Mostly echoing what's already been said but:

RE 1, 2, 3, Veronica, 4, Re-make, 0. PS2 and GC for the last two.

Silent Hill 1 through 3. SH2 and SH3 in particular are among the most memorable. The PS2 versions are the best.

Eternal Darkness - GC

Call of Cthulhu - PS2/PC

If you don't mind going really old school, there are a ton of Point and Click adventure games that are horror themed. Some of them are actually pretty unsettling. The Phantasmagoria series is pretty dated but they are mostly FMV based games so they hold up alright. Phantasmagoria 2 in particular had some decent production values and a lot of little touches along with a very twisted story.

There's some more "laid-back" horror games that in my opinion still hold up rather well. However, you have to be more of a certain type of player to appreciate them.

D NO SHOKUTAKU, TORICO, ENEMY ZERO, NEBULA : ECHO NIGHT etc.

I'm also a fan of the TWILIGHT SYNDROME series on the PlayStation. It's a shame they never brought a single one to the west.

enemy zero. although the game is very hard and is a bit of a hit and miss with people's tastes but the graphics, amtosphere, tension and everything holds up very well

This isn't really a horror game, per se, but Luigi's Mansion is still a good game. Like I said, not really scary, but there were some surprisingly unsettling moments in the game, at least to me. It was surprisingly atmospheric and dark in certain places, especially if you take into consideration the urban legend that Luigi is dead the whole time. Here is an article that discusses it. It's number five on the list.

GS said it did release in Europe.

Besides, even if that was true, a lot of PC games are region free, so I bet you can possibly play the US version on a UK PC.
