how can i play old pc games in hi-resolution?

so i was playing some old PC rpgs like gothic and gothic 2, and i wanted to max the game's resolution to the maximum that my monitor accepts ( 1440*900) the problem is that now all the fonts are very small and near unreadable, is there any way i can play these games at such a high-resolution without suffering this problem?

Maximum screen resolution is not determined by hardware, but software limitations. If programmers implemented a set of video modes ranging from 640x480 to 1024x768, there's no way you'll set it higher, unless a mod comes out.

Followup question: Can you force those old games into a windowed mode so that you don't have to look at stretched graphics?dchan01

Yap, normally you just put "-windowed" at the end of the game shortcut.
