I just wanted to know what you guys think gaming will be like in 2028. I read an IGN article here and it states that, by 2021, unconnected single player gaming will be extinct, and that games will be entering a virtual reality state.

...Which SCARES me, because you guys know I am wanting to develop a game. My idea has a single player campaign that you play with a controller on a television, as well as a multiplayer mode that ALSO uses the controller and television. If my game is developed with the technology that the article states, my game will be ENTIRELY different.

So what do you believe gaming will be like in twelve years? Will the standard controller and television gameplay exist, or will that go extinct?

With how dumbed down everything got over the last 10 years as gaming became hip with the non-gamers that want to fit in on social media, and how much stupider each generation is, I expect gaming to be pretty much phone game-like by then. Tap tap tap...

Games are better than they have ever been, and I honestly can't imagine how they will be in 12 years. I started gaming in the early 90s and have fond memories, but if then-me was transported to the present day, he'd be thrilled with the direction things have gone. "Hey kid" Present Me would say to Past Me "Have a seat and play this game. It's called The Witcher 3..." and then pants would be shat.

Granted, change occurs over time and generally slowly so we are not as shocked as we should/would be, but if trends continue I think it is completely reasonable that there is some sort of holodeck out by 2028. But only if VR sticks around and is more than a trend. I would not be surprised if we saw a resurgence of arcades in light of VR catching on, something kind of like Laser Tag places.

With how "indie" developers are taking more and more of the market, and game development becoming both more accessible and affordable, I think we are going to see better, higher-quality titles coming from that sector of the industry. Indy games are already incredible, with the likes of Hyper Light Drifter, Space Pirates and Zombies, Stonehearth, and countless other being shining examples of what we can do.

Conversely, I expect the big developers and publishers to feel threatened, meaning that either A.) control measures will become more draconian, or B.) they will feel challenged and inspired to increase their quality and improve their relationship with the customer.

Hmmm what else....I expect the CoD developers to either release CoD 163: Double Infinity Plus a Trillion Warfare, or hopefully a new IP...I expect to be playing Diablo 4, WoW 2, and hopefully a new Warcraft RTS...I hope Battlefield continues to be epic and we finally get a sequel to BF 2142 (though I am happy they went to WWI, dont get me wrong)...

I hope for a lot, and with the way things are, I expect it will be mostly great. But mostly it will be awesomely different.

I sincerely hope that offline singleplayer won't vanish, cause there are times when I'd really not want to listen to some 12 year old talk about how he banged my mom while I'm playing.

I'm a strange person like that.

in 2028 you will propably play games that charge you microtransaction to be able to use extra keys needed to play a game.

-yeah you can move forward, but how you gonna jump over that pit. for just 4.99 you can buy the jump controls. Buy together with moving left, right and backwards and get 20% off of each.

-did you run out of clips? Buy more clips 0.99 per standard clip

Just the same old shit that's been going on for a long time. Endless DLC, Microtransactions, EA's bullshit, Sony/MS will continue to do what they do best, Nintendo will still be around, and the gaming crash will come in 2050.

Bad things come to mind when I think about the future of games for some reason. So I stopped thinking. Hopefully games won't be locked behind DNA scans.

As long as I can play games with a controller in front of a screen without having to stream it, I'll be happy. I don't think SP will ever go away as long as gaming exists. But I don't expect these always online MP-focused games to go away either.

I highly doubt that's going to happen. I don't think that will ever happen actually, consoles will always be around so don't always read and actually BELIEVE them articles because aren't always correct.

And if you want to develop a game then do it, who cares what some BS article says, it's your dream and no one else's. No one can predict the future dude.

I'm not optimistic for the future of gaming, since in my opinion the present isn't as good as the past was. Part of be is very hopeful about particular outcomes, like lately I've been excited at the thought of a Vita successor that would get things right and revive handheld gaming outside of Nintendo. But then, I am aware that I have been disappointed by games and systems so many times over the years, and that video games as I've known and loved them may not be around forever.

I think many of my fondest moments in gaming in this life have already occurred. You play certain games over the years and fall in love with them. I imagine, one day, I will end up revisiting a lot of those games again (some for like the 100th time) to finally wring every last drop of goodness out of them. And that is probably some of the best moments in gaming that I will have to look forward to, is bringing things full-circle and completing some of my most beloved games of yesteryear.

I think, as I am now, with newer games there are less and less of them that really seem fun to me and stand out to me. There might be some I manage to get into. But like those many lost loves that got away over the years, you always remember those ones that were most special to you.
