Yes that is technically Wal-Marts policy. But not really. Their main policy is to keep the customer happy. You can literally get away with murder returning things at Wal-Mart if you word it right.LJChronx
Sad, but true. And you don't even need to "word it right" to get away with murder. At most Walmart stores, you just have to be willing to act like a complete douche, being loud and obnoxious. More times than not, they'll give you whatever you're asking for just to shut you the hell up and get you out of the store.
I once saw someone return one of those Power Wheels 4x4 motorized cars, those $300-ish toys, claiming it was only a few days old and already broken. They didn't have a receipt, and there's no way the thing was only a few days old, because the box was faded and stained from age (and probably sitting in a shed or garage for several months, if not longer) and the toy itself was beat all to hell. But this #@$! raised hell, made a huge scene, and ultimately got her refund. And I've seen incidents where the complaining asshat not only got their used-and-broken-past-warranty item exchanged for a new one but, because of all their melodramatic shouting, even got an additional $25 gift card for the inconvenience. Un-f***ing-believable.
So, yeah, Walmart is pretty much happy to bend over and take it, giving you an exchange, refund, price reduction, free stuff, or anything you want if you're willing to be a lying, thieving, obnoxious jackass to get it.
As for the OP: as others said, if you're asking for an exchange on damaged/defective merchandise, it shouldn't be an issue. They just don't give refunds because too many dishonest crapweasels would buy movies and watch 'em, buy games and play/beat 'em, buy CDs and copy 'em, and then return them for a full refund with some lame excuse about how they didn't work or it was the wrong item but they didn't realize it until after they're opened it or whatever. Exchanges aren't generally a problem - unless the item was clearance, in which case exchange might not be an option (because there isn't another copy available, and they won't be getting any more in stock since they were phasing it out), and refunds aren't generally offered on stuff they marked down just to get rid of. But, again, probably if you complained, even in that instance you could still get your money back.
