When I meet people and wanna start a friendship with them, whether it's from school, work, or anywhere else, I feel kinda iffy about starting a conversation about video games because of the "kiddy" image they have. I know theres even teen and adult-targeted video games. but I think people might still see it this way and have second thoughts about asking. Know a way to stay confident about asking? Anyone feel the same way about it?

I find that if I ever start talking about video games that they either think I'm like a loser with no life, or they are just not interested at all.

that's why I come on to these boards.

I think generally you shouldn't care what people think, hey if you want to play video games, why be ashamed of it? And if they don't like you or judge you because of that then maybe you shouldn't be talking to these people.

This is absolutely the truth. If someone is going to judge you for playing video games, then it should be you thinking they are loser...not the other way around. People like that need to open there mind.

Plus, very rarely will you start a conversation with someone and they say they hate video games. I work with people from early 20s up to early 40s and we all play video games to some extent.

I don't regularly start conversations about videogames. Then again, i don't start them either about books or movies or music or whatever. If the topic comes up, fine, but I'm not too much of a conversation starter.

If I can get into a conversation about hobbies I'll mention my love for video games. It's generally accepted by most of the people I talk to, I have yet a person to think of me as being immature.

What's wrong with asking? It's a harmless question.

I don't really have a problem with it. Like Mike said, if they're gonna dis you for gaming, then they're probably not worth your time.

Do you play baseball?

That's an equivalent question to me. Isn't it annoying when I answer a question with another question?

Well, I usually don't talk about video games with other people unless I know they play also. If they can't accept it though, then maybe you shouldn't hang out with them.

Well, I don't spark up conversations about video games, I usually get asked about video games by others. A lot of the people i talk to either play video games or know about them.

If people want to talk about or ask about video games, then I just let them, doesn't bother me. I do get tired of being asked if I like sports and always giving the same answer "No, I don't". But video games I don't mind being asked about, at least with those there's a reasonable chance of an intellingent conversation.
Well sometimes, depends on the other/s.

Almost all of the games I play have a rating of Mature or Adult Only with a few exceptions. This means that you should be at least 17+ to play. If that's "kiddie" I don't want to be an adult.

Ask them what they do in their free time. Ask them if they like to play games, board or video or whatever.

Now that you mention it, "Do you like videogames?" is not the first thing I ask when getting to know someone. It depends on who I'm talking to. If I'm talking to an older person (a superior at work) or a girl, I probably won't mention it. If I'm talking to a guy my age (25), I might mentioned it in passing.

Same here. Honestly though, most conversations with people you don't really know are pretty much devoid of actual information anyway and just consist of meaningless "Oh I see"s and "My brother did that once"s and phrases like that. It's much more fun to just do something stupid or weird to break the ice than pretending to be interested in hobbies or interests you don't really care about IMO.

Since I'm in high school, I dont ask. I just assume that every guy plays video games, and none of the girls do. Of course there are exceptions to this rule, but it works pretty well. So, I never have to ask.

Gamers naturally congregate, being that they are of another species.

Lame jokes aside, I don't ask people flat-out. The most serious gamers are quite open about their gaming habits. It is true that games still have some stigma because they are, for some people, "childish things". This is, of course, not true but it makes finding people with similar hobbies. That is what Gamespot forums are for.

They're such a huge part of the consumer culture that you almost don't even have to ask. If you're patient, the person will usually say something.

I try not to assume people think I'm a loser when I mention games but I do feel like they look at me with a "oh so you play video games." kinda look, as if it's something only little kids and college students do. But since it is my main hobby I cant help but bring it up when I'm getting to know somebody. Although I wont talk alot about it with someone who seems completely uninterested.

I'm not too afraid to bring up video games these days. It's such a huge aspect of life now, I really don't think people think much of it anymore. If they do, then oh well! I'm not going to hide one of my passions.
