They feel like a chore. I can't play one more than 30 minutes.

It's the fact you repeat the same thing, run forward and shoot, over and over and over. There's no diversity in the gameplay.

If FPS action was just a small element of the game, like in Deus Ex and Fallout 3, then it becomes enjoyable. In Deus Ex you are interacting with NPCs and making decisions, so you get immersed in the story. But in games like Bioshock you don't care what anyone is saying since you're just on a tour bus, shooting stuff from start to finish.

I'm asking why so many people enjoy them, cause I know there's tons who do.

Halo is my FPS of choice. And I've never really felt the combat was repetitive at all. Managing ammo and choosing which weapons will best work in a given situation, coupled with the vehicle driving shooty fun has kept me coming back since 2001 and I've yet to tire of it's gameplay loop.

I also enjoy the sci-fi story that the game is wrapped in. I have always enjoyed science fiction anyway, and I find Halo's lore particularly enjoyable.

Can't really speak to any other franchises though. I don't care for CoD or MoH or even Battlefield. Pretty much any shooter that isn't science fiction I get bored with quite quickly.

Usually for me to enjoy an fps it has to have unique qualities, atmosphere, or gameplay mechanics to it, the last FPS games that I enjoyed all had something of those three things mixed in. The only recent ones that I can think of that are shoot ,take cover, health regen , shoot, repeat are the military fps games, cod, moh, and yea those can get kinda boring at times. Did you have any specific games in mind?

Far Cry 3? Anyone? Usually the really good single player FPS's are about more than just shooting things. As in there's more to do.

Someone mentioned the Darkness and I'd say that those are great examples. Hell, getting around and exploring are as a big a part of the first game as shooting and killing things. Plus the powers make the game inherently more interesting than the typical FPS.

Well I guess if you think about the games in there most basic functions ie. shoot and move forward then it probably would be boring. I usually play quite a few FPS games like Halo, CoD, Bioshock, etc. and I generally really enjoy the single-player campaigns because for me there's much more going on then just that basic stuff that interests me. There's story, atmosphere, different environments, enemy types and behavior, different weapons and/or vehicles, etc. I find them quite fun and enjoyable.

I think if you used your brain a bit, you'd be able to figure out what people like about FPS even if you don't like them.

If you're referring to Halo/BF/COD I can understand your frustration. Games like Far Cry 3, Bioshock Infinite, Deus Ex, Metro, and Rage are all really good single player FPS titles though. If you haven't checked those out, I say do so

Single player focused FPSs are actually my favorite kind of games. Games like Bioshock and Half-Life always have me hooked from beginning to end and then some. There's just something about traversing a fully realized world in first person where you can not only appreciate the atmosphere but also shoot up enemies in more unique ways than your standard military shooter.

Why do you give a shit what anyone else enjoys? How does it effect you personally what someone else likes? Lets be honest here it doesn't effect you or matter to you at all. Or is this your hobby? Randomly making posts about how you don't understand how someone cant like the exact same things as you without question?

Millions of people love Michael bay movies, millions of people love mcdonalds, millions of people like boy bands, millions of people love having a mans penis in their anus, millions of people love jesus, millions of people think that dancing with the stars is great television. But I don't agree with any of them so I don't involve myself with those things nor do I give a shit about what someone else likes.

If people would spend more time worrying about what makes them happy instead of worrying about what other people like that they don't like this would be a much nicer world.

Why do you enjoy fps/rpg´s ? or why do you enjoy a certain kind of soda/beer/wine

People enjoy it because it entertains them. its as simple as that.

Easy, I do not have to deal with people being rude to me, cursing at me, and lowering my self esteem while I am trying to enjoy a video game and I seriously mean this. I can at least make an attempt to get better at a FPS if I play it as single player, where as on-line there is no possible way for me to make an improvement, I just keep making zero progress and people treat me poorly.

Try playing some good sp FPS, instead of the shitty modern mainstream FPS formula of the 4-6 hour tacked-on single-player campaign, which will be on rails and will take place within a tiny, linear playable corridor. It will also consist of QTEs, following a quest marker, and the computer telling and showing you exactly where to go and who to shoot occasionally. It will also be piss-easy.

Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay

Stalker: SoC and CoP

Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis

Doom 1 & 2, Hexen, Heretic,Serious Sam games (avoid 2)

No One Lives Forever

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth

Undying

Ghost Recon 1

Original Rainbow 6/Raven Shield/Rogue Spear

SWAT 3 & 4

Vietcong + expansions

System Shock 1 & 2 (rpg hybrid)

Original Deus Ex and HR (rpg hybrid)

Vampire Bloodlines (rpg hybrid)

Hidden & Dangerous 1 & 2

Zeno Clash

Aliens vs. Predator 2

@Al-Manyouk: It's all about different interests. Clearly FPS's don't interest you. But just because they don't interest you doesn't mean that it's impossible for anyone else to enjoy them.

Lol I love this.

How does anyone enjoy RPG's, all you do is whatever you want. Sheesh.

SP FPS is great fun, especially the games that focus more on competitve MP as you can play with no lag, no campers, no clans. On some games you can set them up how you like meaning adjust the difficulty and play only the maps you want to etc.

Cause it has a story......and it ends, unlike MP with a bunch of trolls for hours and hours, though the AI could be better

I ask myself the same thing about online FPS, but I don't let it bother me because ultimately I just don't have to play FPS online at all. Much like how you don't have to play offline, and can avoid games that have no multiplayer. (as rare as they are these days, they do exist)

Even if they offer better mechanics and fundamental gameplay, as long as there are racists, angry people, and overall bad people (including children) playing multiplayer video games online, single player games including first person shooters will remain consistently the best gaming experiences for me.

Want a single-player FPS that'll blow your socks off with its incredible AI and heart-pounding combat? Play F.E.A.R.. It's only $10 on Steam AND it includes the two expansion packs, Extraction Point and Perseus Mandate.

I recently picked up Bulletstorm and I'm enjoying it so far. Far Cry 3 was good as well but the problem with these games is that their replay value is completely crap.
