How in the world do you do combos in these games?

Dead or Alive and Street Fighter.

I swear I never understood how to get better at these games. Can anyone give me an overview on how the control scheme works and how people do those combos? I've been playing Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max and I can only do a bunch of single punches and kicks.

In SSF4 there is a training mode, where it tells you what buttons to press for certain combos.

With SFA3M, if it doesn't have training mode, just turn it down on easiest, and just try a bunch of different moves together. Usually you press the next attack button earlier than you think. For example, in the middle of the animation of an uppercut, begin the input for the Hadouken.

It's why I prefer Tekken. More accessible yet there is still a clear gap between the pros & the casuals. Street Fighter seems to be overly complicated for the sake of being overly complicated.

Yeah, I find Tekken's combo system more accessible. I've actually had a few people recognize me in school, asking me if I really am good at Tekken because apparently, they remember the event where a few years ago, I showed up one of the "cool" guys by beating him at Tekken 5. I used Lili and Xiaoyu. I felt so cool.

Oh, and I actually don't know the input for Hadouken either. Please don't kill me.

I'm the same when it comes to Street Fighter, I enjoy playing it (have enjoyed the series since I was a kid) but I can't get the hang of combos, even after using the training mode. Just not built for it I guess.

Street fighter has very strict timing on just about everything.

Easy combo to try with sakura, is crouching medium kick to shouyuken. look at a number pad and its of the motion of 623. Learning this basic one hit to special combos are ok. Then you can start doing fancier things.

My God..

Come on, it may be simple but man the menus overcomplicate everything. Even the simplest moves are transformed into a muddled mess.
