How long should "HD" even be called "HD"?

Calling 720p/1080p "high-definition" made sense when having it meant being cool and everything, but now that most people have such technology shouldn't it just be called 720 or 1080, and call SD something like "low-def"?

Forever. It helps people know what they are getting into. Same as VGA, SVGA, QGA, etc.

High definition looks good on a label, so no.

The thing is, "high-defintion" has 'existed' since the 1930s... for the entire lifetime of television the term was around to describe quality higher than what most were offering. Of course it didn't catch on until the 720p/1080p era.

They'll use another adjective to describe whatever level of definition comes next.

The next level after 1080p is pretty much 4K. Its not gonna be available on consoles for quite some time.

It should always be called HD because it's not a term that changes over time. For example next-gen is a term that changes to current gen when whatever it's referring to becomes the norm.

It should always be called HD, just a VGA should always be called VGA, or WQHD should always be called WQHD.
