I'm not sure I'm up for the complicated process of learning Japanese, but I've picked up a little Japanese playing import games. I wish Nintendo would release a "Japanese Trainer" for the DS over here.
I plan to, just because I can't apply the patch properly that lets me play Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 in English. Shame too, because its the only Fire Emblem I have left.

Same here, because the grammar set up is completely different to that of European languages, and words are comprised of syllables instead of letters (the katakana is basically just representation of the syllables).
I learned a little Japanese on the Internet for the sake of trying to understand what those characters meant when I played a game in Japanese mode. Forgot most of it, though...
wow i would never do that. i can see if you wanna learn it just because and you want to speak and/or need to speak it but if you want to learn it just for the sake of understanding a japanes video game then you really have no life.
I haven't-yet. I will learn it some day, though, so that I won't have to rely on subtitles for anime and games. And especially so that I can understand this.
My best friend not only learned Japanese when the necessity of importing Saturn games arose, but he ended up majoring in Japanese in college, and has been translating for the Hiroshima prefecture (Japanese government) for the last 5 years in Japan.
