Some games stay with you for years, apex entertainment you will be forever glad you played.

But most games are mild entertainment, stuff that stimulates you but gives you nothing in return in the long term. The type of games that you play through just because it annoys you if you didn't.

I went through my Xbox 360 games last week, and honestly, I had forgotten about 80% of those games that I spent hundreds and hundreds of hours playing through.

Do you think that most of the games you played this year were worth it, just for that simple short-term entertainment? or do you share a similar skeptical mind on the time used on playing stuff.

The concept of wasting time due to gaming has never been a focus point for me. Gaming is downtime to help me find enjoyment in a hobby I enjoy after busy days at work, or stressful social endeavours. Personally value it heavily week after week. Main reason I come to gaming forums is because I equally enjoy discussing games_

And I dip out my comfort zone of games to try different experiences, sometimes even recommendations. However I have played a few hours of games/ some even sadly finished in which I've ended a session thinking to myself "wish I played something else"

Some examples from the last few years-

  • The Elder Scrolls Online
  • Mount and Blade: Warband
  • Owlboy PS4 port
  • Gothic
  • Super Mario Bros. U
  • Super Robot Wars V
  • Dragon Age (Origins and Inquisition)
  • Shadow of the Beat Remake
  • Kirby Star Allies
  • Monster Hunter: World P.C. port
  • Gundam Versus
  • Mother Russia Bleeds
  • Little Big Planet 3

I don't feel like anything that brings joy to you is a waste of time.
If anything it has brought me some pride.

I completed Halo 3 on legendary with a friend
I completed level 100 on my first Torchlight 2 character (I'm now going for an Elite Hardcore character)
Unlocking everything in Soul Caliber 2 for the Gamecube
Pure enjoyment
Buying my first SNES and copy of Super Mario World and playing it with my oldest daughter
Watching gaming channels such as Metal Jesus Rocks and John Hancock

Well, for starters I don't really like the expression "waste of time" since that's kind of something that a kid might hear from parents who "just don't get it, man."

So I like that you clarified between actual substantial stuff vs stuff that just occupies time. In those terms, I'd say that pretty much every game I've ever played has simply occupied my time. Like, it's just recreation and nothing more.

Having said that, that's still not a bad thing. People can't be working towards something productive every second of every day. People need recreation/hobbies/play in order to stay sane. Some people play video games, some people knit sweaters, some people do photography, some people raise beans and roses and snakes. Just the act of some recreation is kind of productive by itself (as long as it doesn't get in the way of REALLY important stuff). So yeah, I really dislike saying "waste of time".

But yeah...I think every video game I've ever played was a "waste of time". I just don't get anything out of them beyond recreation. And being honest, there are plenty of other enjoyable ways that I could be having recreation that would likely be more "productive" in a more tangible sense.

I only play a select few games each year that I know will cater to my taste so I usually enjoy my time gaming. Whenever I realized that I'm not having that much fun with a game, hence wasting my time when I could be doing something more enjoyable, I simply stopped playing it. I don't consider gaming in general a waste of time as it's one of my hobbies that I require to unwind, relax and escape reality.

I have fond memories of every single game I got on me shelves, from old Commodore 64 casettes to PS1 games and on thru the generations.

Its like good books. I do not regret time spend on them.

If I feel a game is waste of time, I stop playing it and immediately sell or trade it in. No point clinging on to games that dont give you good time.

I live to waste time. Be it playing games, reading comics and books or just hanging at the bar watching football. That's how I decompress after work. Does any of that actually accomplish anything? No, so therefore, it is a waste of time and I am perfectly fine with that.

The only game that I've wasted my time on was LineAge 2 C1 during school years. It ait up most of my productive time, and it made me quit multiplayer games in general. Overall, not feeling that I'm wasting time with entertainment mediums, because people need "bread and games", especially since I 'game' an hour mostly per day. So...

Now, if you'd ask how much of my time I'm using to pointlessly surf the web and participate in meaningless topics... TOO FREAKING MUCH TIME...

If it leaves a good memory and I enjoyed playing it then no, it’s never a waste of time.

Sometimes I do feel like some of the games I'm playing are a waste of my time, and I kinda feel like I'm going through the motions. A lot of the time I'll automatically play something when I'm bored, even though I'm not particularly enjoying it. So I'm finding as I'm getting older, that I'm being a lot more picky with the games I play & only complete them if I really am enjoying it. Otherwise I'll do something else.

None tbh I love gaming so I choose to spend some of my free time doing it. If I didn't want to or felt like it was a waste of my time I wouldn't play lol

Very little.

If I'm not enjoying a game I drop it quickly. I don't care if I just paid $60 for it. My time is more valuable to me than getting my money's worth.

All of it.

That's the point of it, after all. To stop running around and working so hard and waste some time doing nothing.

But, if you mean to say do I regret wasting any of my time? Of late, most of it. Can't seem to find a game to really stick with, and what games I do find I like I play the shit out of them for a week and forget about them. Haven't touched Battlefield 5 since a few days after its release.

I guess some games are a better use of time than others.

But as long as I am reasonably engaged then I don't sweat how memorable or fantastic it is - what matters is all the benefits I get from gaming such as:

* being in the present moment

* feeling things that I would otherwise be hard pressed to feel in so called "real life"

* exercising and strengthening my mind

None, really. If I find myself getting annoyed; if I stop having fun while playing a game; then it becomes a waste of time because having fun is the whole point.

The only times I feel that way, is when I am games that I am not fully interested in. They could be games that I used to love, but are getting old and played the enjoyment out of them.

But overall no. I love playing games. I love talking about them. My career is stressful and video games are my get away. I have many online friends and friends I got to meet in rl.

When it stops being engaging, fun and repetitive. Or just has dumb design constantly popping up.

Actually when I am gaming I feel alert and active since games put skills to the test such as problem solving and being able to come up with strategies, I find them stimulating and I feel elevated. I only think it is a waste of time when it stops becoming enjoyable and it gets in the way of other things.

I think only 2:30 hours is the most you should play a game daily to have a productive day. Even less if you're busy/
