In the Water Temple, you're supposed to shoot an arrown through the torch to light up the other torches to open up the door with the iron bars. I'm playing this game for the first time and after looking up a walkthrough 3 times before I got to this part, I promised myself not to look at one again. But how were you supposed to figure out THIS on your own???

Here's a hint for your next Zelda game, Water Temple = Definite frusturation.

Also, I beat OOT without a walkthrough when I was like 12 or 13...It wasn't hard. =/

Noo, it's those voices again:(:(!!! But seriously, Water Temple is quite annoying and you can get lost quite easily.

Hint:
When you're inside the mid section, take a very close look at the cinema when the water rises.
Ehh, arrow through torch = fire arrow is just something you pick up and come to expect out of a Zelda game. That's what I like about the series, random experimentations leads to success.

To Jerell:

Yeah, I know. It took me a while to see that. I though my frustrations would be over after that.

The Water Temple is my favorite temple in Ocarina. I think part of it was the fact that it was so confusing. You really had to think on your toes in that one.

Actually come to think of it, the water temple in Majora's Mask wasn't a cakewalk either, with all of those pipes with changing water direction.

Well let's see:

1. How can I hit a torch up there?

2. Arrows!

3. But my arrows aren't on fire...

4. Hey! That torch is on fire!

5. ???

6. Profit!

It was pretty ovious to me... after playing games for years you pick up that "try everything possible to continue even if it's not plausible" attitude. I haven't seen that kind of "puzzles" in newer games tho.

lol I remember my first time going through the water temple. I was stuck fighting the mini boss of that temple. He was freaking hard for me to beat for some reason during my first fight with him. And the final boss? I may have spent less time defeating him, but it still took awhile considering how many times I had to restart from dieing..... The only time I had a problem was finding out what to do after the shadow temple. I spent weeks trying the find the next temple but to no avail....

Wasn't particularly difficult. The hard part was finding out there's a passage underneath one of the platforms in the middle pillar/room in that temple.

The only part in that game that I remember I had trouble doing was the well. Dont ask me why, I hated the well.

A general rule of thumb in Zelda games is to light up things which can be lit. I doubt that was the first time in the game where you had to shoot an arrow through a torch to light it on fire either, though I could be wrong about that.

I personally never had much trouble with the water temple, but listening to many others it might as well be the bane of existence. As far as the torches go. The game should have taught you by now that you should always light the torches to unlock doors/spawn items. Hell the the first or second locked room in the deku tree makes you light a torch to get out. The Forest Temple should have also shown you that you can light stuff on fire by shooting an arrow through it (remember the iced over eye with the revolving platforms and the torch in the middle... yeah).

I just grabbed two green potions and used the fire crystal over and over. kinda cheap, but it works.

I think there is at least one other spot...it's been so long since I played, but I remember it being on a spinning platform, and you had to time it just right to go thru the lit torch and hit the target (maybe an eye...not sure) with a flame arrow...but I also remember doing it a few other times, but it may have been me being too lazy to equip the flame arrows, or maybe it was before I got them...I forget...I kinda feel like playing it now lol..

You had to do that in the Forest Temple. At that point, you don't have fire arrows.

This. It's pretty basic. If there's a torch that isn't on fire, then it needs to be. It's the purpose of life for a torch. So, you just have to think of how to light a torch when you have no source of fire on yourself (other than Din's Fire). There's a fire source in the room, ergo, that must be used in the lighting of the other torch.

Seems pretty self explanatory in your post, dude. Although Water Temple is effing annoying, I don't see that any harder than *SPOILER* switching the water levels in the Temple and traversing through there to see which is the right level to head to the next area.

I'm being completely honest when I say this. I found the water temple in ocarina of time easier than all the other dungeons in the game. Yes I am being serious. It's the only dungeon in the game I never found myself stumped on any particular part of the dungeon for long. I even got stuck for longer on the great deku tree. Yes I just said that and yes I'm being serious again. Took me a while to figure out you had to shoot the thing above the door with the slingshot to open the door. But yeah the only thing I really found hard about the water temple was dark link. That said I'd have to say water temple is my favourite dungeon in the game by far. Ocarina of time had alot of moments for me that really stumped me and a couple that made me think "how the hell was I meant to figure that out" but the water temple honestly wasnt one of them. I dont get why people say it's so hard to be honest. There are way harder parts in the game imo.

I had a problem similar to this in Resident Evil. Needed some item I had but dropped in a item box. I didn't realise it was what I needed till I looked at the file and figured it out. Resident Evil is mainly just remembering rooms really though.

Yeah Dark Link. He would backflip away... once. Meaning that unless he was really far away he wouldn't dodge it. Din's Fire is also unblockable by Dark Link so get close+ Din's Fire= Easy win.

I loved the water temple. Come to think of it, I enjoyed most of Zelda's water temples.

I think that's mainly because I'm used to playing adventure game like Myst and so on - challenging puzzles are fun, not annoying. :P

Like a few others have mentioned, the need to shoot arrows through fire isn't exactly difficult to figure out. Also, I still to this day have never figured out why so many people have trouble with the Water Temple. I completed it without using a guide and almost zero difficulty when the game was released. I'm not trying to brag but I just never understood what was difficult about it.

Well, the game showed you that you need to light the torches. You use the means that are available to you. You had a wooden stick as a child and torches that were at your height. Set the stick on fire and light the torches. Okay, as an adult, you can't use the sticks (I have no idea why that makes sense...). The only thing you have that is wooden is the arrows that you shoot from your bow. There is a source of fire in the room. You have to get the fire from there to the torches, and you have a wooden projectile...

I never understood why people think that the Water Temple in OoT was difficult. As a 12 year old boy playing the game, I never found it hard. Actually, I got stuck in the Forest Temple my first play through and to me, that was my favorite dungeon. So I say water temples = overrated.

I think most people just find it annoying because swimming controls in zelda were always so messed up. So easy to get lost, camera angle screw you over etc. Well at least for me it was, the puzzles were never that hard.
