How would you define the term "gamer"?

So apparently, according to my friends, I'm not a "gamer."

The only games I play are Assault Cube, Sauerbraten, and Quake Live, outside of my soon-to-be 3DS and a handful of PS3 RPGs.

According to them, a gamer is someone who spends a LOT of time playing video games, devotes a lot of time to getting good at them, and plays the heck out of their console of choice. Gamers devote themselves to becoming good at a game, and build their own high-end PCs with accessories.

How would you define a gamer? I'd say I am a casual gamer outside of Assault Cube, which I am slowly edging towards becoming competitive in.

to me, a gamer is someone who plays a lot of games and different types of games. If you only play COD, your not a gamer your a COD fan, if you only play FPS your not a gamer your a FPS fan and so on. Me and my group of friends actually just had this conversation because when a new game like MW3 comes out we have people we havent played with in 6 months to a year wanting to play that only play COD so we set a rule that if you don't go from game to game with us, you will be dropped for someone who does if they want to play.

I have to agree with JayQ, if you are a person who play many different games, not just Cod or Battlefield. But also simply a person who spends much more than 1-2 hours playing every day.

For me a gamer is someone who plays games and becomes good at them, they spend more time then casual players on there game of choise. And for me personaly and people are free to disagree people who play halo, cod or battlefield can never be considerd gamers. I wont even state a reason for it thats just how it is for me. Aww alright I will post a reason : Your generic FPS games has no challange to them and because of it there is nothing to be good at. They take no skill and require no brainactivity what-so-ever. And before you go make yourself look stupid by asking me if they take no skill how can people be so good at them and there be competitions? 1 word. Money. Tournaments are held because they generate profit from the mainstream. A game like COD dosent require skill. All you need is to practise your aiming and learn the maps. Games like starcraft 2 are skilled.

While saying that I will add that a player who playes starcraft 2 or anyother game might not be considerd a gamer. A gamer is a strange word but I would say it boils down to someone who plays games as a hobby I would say. But it has to be a regular hobby, not like fishing or my favourite hobby : casual sex.

a real true gamer to me is, a person who has no girlfriend, has no job, has no life, is pale as the color white, lives in his parents house, has no money, no future, looks at youtube videos of games all day, spends his weekends playing nonstop and eventually taking breathes here and there, has never seen the sun, (neither has his butt) doesnt talk to girls or (guys) sits and rages about review scores, posts on every review forum, and thinks that someday..just someday xbox will get a decent exclusive.

Xbox doesnt need exclusives when ALL multiplatform games run and look better on Xbox, Playstation NEEDS exclusives just to survive....just sayin.

A gamer is someone who actively participates or follows gaming culture. Your interests (fandom) might limit yourself to one platform, or a particular game series, but if you are interested in gaming at large then you are probably a gamer. I might even say that to be a gamer your major hobby/interest is in games.

But as stated simply playing one game (series) doesn't make you a gamer unless you are more actively interested in gaming at large.

Gamer = One who plays video games in his spare time as their hobby. There's no real hour requirement, depends on the demands of your life, but at least a few hours a week is required to have any cred, 2-3 hours per day is common.

I'm sure everyone has a different type of definition for it, I don't care what type of games people chose to play. If they are playing something then I would call them a gamer.

I suppose there are a couple of definitions. To someone who doesn't play games, a "gamer" is someone who does. On somewhat of a regular basis. To someone who does play games, a "gamer" is someone who plays for several hours a day, has a nice collection of trophies/achievements, has somewhat of a passion for the hobby, etc.

Someone who plays games consistently.

A person who enjoys video games as a hobby, and not just something to pass the time or play because their friends are.

I can not play for 2 months but still keep reading gaming news , reviews , forums etc..Doesn't that still make me a gamer?

I agree with this as well, it's not always how much you play (a lot of times you can't), but how much you care.

To me, a "gamer" is anyone who plays any type of video game (excluding games that come pre-loaded onto PCs or games that are strikingly similar to ones that come pre-loaded onto PCs) for at least five to ten hours a week.

Gamer = someone who enjoys playing videogames on any system with no blind loyalty, thats a fanboy, which is not a gamer.

Example myself, I play on my 360,PS3 and PC (usually FPS,RPGs,Action Adventures,RTS). Thats what a gamer does.
