COME -- BASK IN MY HAPPINESS! SHARE IN MY MOMENT!

I also got one recently in the last six months. My favorite game on it so far is Dragon Force.

It's a pretty flawed game, but it's fairly interesting.

Also, first, get an Action Replay 4M Auto Plus, it works as a Memory Card, as a cheating device (Or to have red blood on The House Of The Dead XD), an import loader (Your Saturn will be region free) and a 4MB RAM cartridge. You can get one here: http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-k8-49-en-70-1b2.html

Then, get this games:

- Virtua Fighter 2 (It may look bad nowadays but it's an incredibly deep game)

- Nights Into Dreams (Get it with a 3D controller)

- The House Of The Dead (The US version is rare, but you can get the japanese version for 10-20 bucks including shipping and it's almost completely in english)

- Dragon Force (Pretty rare too, but it's fairly good)

- Panzer Dragoon I & II (Truly amazing rail shooters)

- Panzer Dragoon Saga (Quite possibly the greatest Sega Saturn game ever made and on the best RPG's in gaming history and it's also one of the most rare games of all time, but if you can find it for 160-200 dollars then get it, it's magnificent and I doubt that we'll ever see a re-release or a port)

- Exodus (Fairly decent FPS with some of the best looking graphics on the Saturn, it's a PAL exclusive, but it's great and it's pretty cheap too)

- Enemy Zero (Many people hated it due to it's difficulty and learning curve, but it's really good and it's pretty cheap too, unless you want the US version which is the same as the japanese one, a truly unique game with a fantastic sound design and Fumito Ueda, the director of Ico and SotC was an animator on the game)

- X-Men: Children Of The Atom (Fantastic fighting game, it's not rare, it's not super cheap either, but it's really good, smooth and shows the Saturn's fantastic 2-D processing)

- Marvel Super Heroes Vs. Street Fighter (A japan exclusive, but it's not that expensive or complex so it's fairly import friendly, I love this game, the graphics are amazing, the fighting system is perfect IMO and it shows the power of the Saturn combined with the 4MB RAM)

Those are some decent choices for your Saturn.

Deffinetly get the 4 in 1 cart as mentioned earlier. Make sure to check out some of the japanese 2d fighters like asuka %120, galaxy fight and sonic council. Plenty of great shoot em ups for the saturn but I'm sure someone else will be listing a bunch soon for you. So many cool exclusives for the saturn and plenty of cool titles that were only in the arcades and no other console.

I wrote that in my iPod Touch and trust me, Apple knows how to overprice their "shiny" hardware, but they can't add a decent english dictionary.

Anyways, yes I mean't Exhumed, it's news for me that the game got released in North America, sorry :S

I know, but my iPod's predictive dictionary causes some unintentionally hilarious sentences and it usually changes words even when they are right. It sucks.

Man, good luck trying to find GOOD games at a decent price. Most of the games listed here are hard to find in used game stores and very expensive if you go on ebay. By the way, now would be a good time for someone to prove me wrong and point me in the right direction to add Saturn games to my collection.

KPAXMAN

the games I listed are not expensive even the Japanese imports.

that whole "Saturn games are too expensive" thing is absolutly rediculous, the expensive games are usually some of the rare games like Panzer Saga and Burning Rangers , or some of the Japanese shmups. the majority of games don't even cost that much .

some more "cheap" games , note that these prices are lifted straight out of Ebay UK

Virtua Fighter 2 - £3.99

Duke Nukem 3D - 12.99

Winter Heat - JP version £3 . PAL version is about £6 (last time I saw it)

Athlete Kings/Decathelte - £3.99

Sega Rally - £3.99

Daytona USA - £3.49

Virtua Cop 1 - £7.99

Virtua Cop 2- £5.99

and some other prices

Quake - £8.99

Last Bronx - 9.99

Fighters Megamix - £8.99

Soviet Strike - £5.99

Resident Evil - £12.99

Street Fighter Alpha - £9.00

Street Fighter Alpha 2 - £11,99

Virtual On - £9.99

Tomb Raider - £4.99

and this is just games released in the US and Europe, I didn't even get into the Japanese imports

so much for the "Saturn is too expensive" rubbish that people mention.....

The only place where the Lobotomy FPS games are cheap is Britain, and as far as I know they're all PAL optimised too so no importing available for outside of Europe.

Those games sold like crap in the US, I remember reading an interview once where Lobotomy effectively said the only thing keeping them going were their British sales.

they were popular here no doubt, though still, the majority of Saturn games are not expensive as most people think.

No love for Saturn Bomberman? It's possibly the best 2D entry in the entire series, and if you can afford 10 gamepads and two multi-taps... (Good luck finding a US or UK copy, though. At least Japanese ones are common and cheap, but there's some untranslated bits if you care about that sort of thing.)

Yeah like many people were saying before, the 4 in 1 cart is a MUST for the Saturn. It will allow you to play all of the Japanese imports, like those awesome space shooters that weren't released outside of Japan. Also check out Crusader no Remorse. That game is fantastic, the controlls take a while to get used to, but that game is very fun. It's basically in the same format as the first two Fallout games. Shining Force 3 is another good RPG. Clockwork Knight, and Rayman are arguebly the best platformers on the system, defintley some of the hardest though.

I just bought panzer dragoon saga.

At first I was going to stop playing with the grainy graphics but after a while the game became immensly fun.
If you can find it then buy it..

I got my Saturn a few years ago for around 40 bucks inluding 6 games. In the meantime, I have spent far more money on Saturn games and peripherals.

First I got a 3D Pad for Nights, then I got Panzer Saga for around 100 $ (it was totally worth it!) plus Guardian Heroes for 40$, and finally I bought a 4 in 1 cart because I was afraid that I might lose my precious Panzer Saga saves ;)

Nice system, although I did not find many games that I wanted to play for a longer time. I might give Guardian Heroes another try soon though. I also have to beat Panzer Dragoon I and II.

A Sega Saturn! The first 32-bit CD system that did beat the Sony Playstation to market a good plan to launch early. But Sega was not able to make its plans for the Sega Saturn work out. Which is unfortunate.

I remember wanting the Sega Saturn and Virtua Fighter. way back in 1994...

I have fun with my Saturn. It's definetly worth the $50 it's going for. Great arcade hits on it. Some recommended games that aren't Japanese imports and won't cost you an arm and a leg:

  • Clockwork Knight 1 & 2 (Platformer)
  • Darius Gaiden (Shoot Em Up)
  • Galactic Attack (Shoot Em Up)
  • Daytona Racing USA (Racing)
  • Panzer Dragoon (On-Rails/3rd Person Shooter)
  • Panzer Dragoon: Zwei (On-Rails/3rd Person Shooter)
  • Resident Evil (Survival-Horror)
  • Shinobi Legions (Action-Platformer)
  • Sonic 3D Blast (Platformer)
  • Virtua Cop 1 & 2 (On-Rails Arcade Shooter)
  • X-Men: Children of the Atom (Fighting Game)

This is a good list to go by, but some of those games, as mentioned, are extremely pricey. I still have my copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga and it really is an amazing game, so if you are willing to spend the money on the game, it's definitely worth it, especially if you're a collector. The Saturn is a great system, congrats on getting a fun piece of hardware =D

This ...... thread has increased since I was last here, and failed to submit a reply due to GameSpot's terrible message board functionality. I want to reply to so much, but I can't do it in one post, because it always says my HTML is fudged up, when I know it isn't.

You know what? It's pretty coincidental that you should mention that title. When I looked to see what Saturn games my local used book store was selling with the console where I bought it, there was only one intriguing-looking game there, and it was D. I was thinking about getting it, but I didn't have a lot of info to go on. It might be a cult ****c, or an obscure gem, or it might also be a steaming pile; so I waited until I could get home, and look it up. I actually forgot all about it. Thanks.

NOTE: Since the time I first wrote this, I have bought D. I haven't played it yet.

congrats, its a great system to have , what games did you get for it?

Darkman2007

So far, I only own X-Men: Children of the Atom, which I actually bought at a really cool old game store back in 2007, which comes with the case, and manual, in near mint condition.

I actually tested the game last night, and it really is noticeably superior to the shoddy PS1 conversion I owned before. The difference is like SNES Mortal Kombat II compared to Genesis Mortal Kombat II.

Hey -- THANKS, man! That info is GREATLY appreciated! I'm no stranger to console modding, but even I didn't know about that AMAZING accessory! I just bought an S-video cable from Play-Asia this morning, and signed up for an account there, so that's perfect! I was getting worried about having to buy a memory card, but that's just too awesome.

3D controller? Whuuuuu?!

Don't you have to have the light gun to play House of the Dead? I'd definitely pick it up, because that game is nostalgia for me. I remember it from the arcades.

As far as Panzer Dragoon Saga goes -- wow, yeah -- I'd LOVE to get that game (being the most coveted of them all), but I'm afraid I'll never the physical game as long as I live. I'm also not planning on spending that much money on even a great, old, rare ****c like that -- I love retro gaming, but I'm not crazy. I've got to be reasonable with my hobby's fund, and I just see no way of ever coming across an affordable copy. It's the same with Valkyrie Profile. It's an awesome RPG I'll never get a hold of.

I think I'd rather pick up Marvel Superheroes rather than X-Men Vs. Street Fighter, or Marvel Superheroes Vs. Street Fighter; but I DO love the Capcom fighting games.

I'd like to take advantage of the Saturn's 2D swan-song games, and get Guardian Heroes. I hope I do.

By the way, now would be a good time for someone to prove me wrong and point me in the right direction to add Saturn games to my collection.

KPAXMAN

I know exactly what you mean. I picked up a Dreamcast, too, the week prior, and I'll have the exact same problem with that one, too. I just have a bad feeling about my success finding games for the console since they're all so damn rare. Maybe I'll have to seek out emulators. I'll try, though.

I just bought panzer dragoon saga.

At first I was going to stop playing with the grainy graphics but after a while the game became immensly fun.
If you can find it then buy it..

HEY! If you don't want it, GIVE IT TO ME! LOL

you can get that game for about £100 (about 150-200 dollars) , no point in ever spending that much money, even if it is factory sealed and all.

in regards to the light gun question , you don't have to have a light gun , you can just play with a regular controller, but thats not as fun. Im not sure about HoTD ,

but Virtua Cop 1 and Virtua Cop 2, actually let you use the Saturn mouse rather then a controller or a gun. you could always try the mouse too, its not expensive,

and yes, the Saturn had a 3D analog controller which quite a few of the later games used , its not necessary, but it helps quite alot with games like Nights Into Dreams and Burning Rangers.

I wouldnt go for Marvel Superheroes, you may as well go for one of the Vs games, even if they are Japan only,

as mentioned, you will need a way to play Japanese games, either through an action replay 4in1 cartridge, or some other way, but I would suggest finding a way to play JP games, since thats the way to get 100% out of your Saturn .

also some games which are quite expensive in their US/PAL versions , are more affordable in the JP versions.

if you need a list of some good, affordable Saturn imports , I would be glad to help.

I've got two games which you might be (and other Saturn fans) interested to play, and might not have heard of. Although, I very much think that you will.

Silhouette Mirage & Sexy Parodius

They both look awesome, and if I can acquire the imports, I very much will.

Although, there's a PS1 version of Silhouette Mirage, which I should probably shoot for instead. I'd want to get the unreleased-to-the-States Saturn version since I know the Saturn doesa much better job of handling 2D games than the PS1 does. Although, I'd also want to get the PS1 version because I'd be interested to read/hear the silly dialogue, and it would all be in Japanese if I got the import. I own Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and Mega Man X4, on the PS1, and they both have Saturn versions; so why not have Silhouette Mirage, too? Right? Supposedly, the Saturn version of 'Symphony' is superior for having two extra areas, and another "Familiar," but I'm content with my PS1 version. Now, I don't know if MMX4 is better on the Saturn, or not. THAT is something you could tell me.

Also, what is wrong with Marvel Superheroes? That game is loads of fun.

not sure where you got the "SOTN is better on the Saturn" thing, but its not, I own the Saturn version , and while it does have the extra content (extra character Maria , new areas, a few new items) , it suffers from more slowdown and slightly blurrier visuals then the PS1 version due to a shoddy port, though if that doesnt bother people then yeah the Saturn version might be better. and Marvel Superheroes is good, but its nowhere near as good as the Vs games on the Saturn , MSH is slower, has less animation (even if it is compatible with the RAM cart) and is just overall less fun to play. Sillhouette Mirage is good , never played the PS1 version , so I won't say which is better, though usually when a game is designed for one console and then ported to another, the port is usually worse, so that coupled with the fact its a 2D game , might mean the PS version is worse, by how much I don't know.

Dude if you want cheaper Sega Saturn games go to amazon.com. Most of the ones you find don't have manuals or anything, but a lot of the games on ebay.com don't have manuals either. Trust me you can find some great games for less than $20.00 and most of the sellers on amazon are really great. I just wanted to share this with you because I love the Saturn (hints my user name lol) and I'm always on the hunt for some great games. I a lot of good games for the Saturn and most where found on ebay until I discovered that amazon was cheaper then I started buying from there.

I'm with you there, and while they aren't real expensive, they are higher than most retro consoles, excluding that price hog Neo Geo. I was wanting to add Albert Odyssey and Guardian Heroes, but they are over $50 where I've looked. Ebay or Amazon does have them a bit better though.

Ha, very good! What do you need to allow your NA Saturn to play imports? One of those Carts that go in the slot in the back, or do you have to mod your Saturn? Hopefully not, because i will not go the latter. I don't need to learn Japanese though, I skip the cutscenes! lol

yes, an action replay 4 in 1 is what you need

and no you don't need to learn Japanese, I certainly didn't and I did just fine, heck I even play some Japanese RPGs and still manage to enjoy them (especially if they have an online translation guide like Shining Force 3)

of course knowing Japanese will give you a certain advantage, but for most games its not needed, in fact alot of games have English menus (which is all you need if its a fighting game or shmup)

and the whole "Saturn games are too expensive" thing is somewhat unfounded, yes the Saturn is not as cheap as something like the NES in the US or the Master System here, but its not exactly expensive.

you mentioned 2 games, both of which are known to be expensive in their US and PAL formats (in fact Albert Odyssey never got a PAL release), due to their cult status, the Japanese versions are actually pretty cheap

though admittedly Saturn games have been rising in price lately, Ive been checking around and PAL Resident Evil costs £12-15 now, when just a few years ago it cost £8

just as an example , I recently got Exhumed/Powerslave for the Saturn , a very good FPS game for...... £3 (and that includes shipping)

Maybe the popularity of the Saturn is increasing, as crazy as it may seem, a lot of so-called hardcore gamers would probably want to get their hands on one of the best fighting game consoles released!

Id say its a combination of more popularity and the fact that people are starting to expect to pay alot.

if someone is willing to give you alot of money, you will take it. if sellers found out they can't get away with high prices, they would lower them , its just that there are people who will easily throw too much money at a game.

'Grats, TC! couple of suggestions- Albert Odyssey: the Legend of Eldean(my pick for best turn-based rpg of all time.) Braindead 13(a hilarious sort of interactive cartoon adventure game) Megaman X4- the only thing the Saturn version had that the PSX version didn't was a code to turn Zero black. Shinobi Legions(best action platformer on the console+Cheesy kung fu FMVs!) Sonic Jam(still the best damn Sonic collection to be had anywhere.)

Albert Odyssey? really? interesting choice. I like the game, though IM not sure Id say its the best turn based RPG on the Saturn , let alone of all time. youre right about Sonic Jam though , really good compilation , looks better than the originals too which is nice, and the spindash in Sonic 1 is just icing on the cake.

Not to mention the 3d museum world. And what do you mean about Albert O? It had everything! Comedy, tragedy, lizard people; a talking sword! What else is there? Hah hah hah.

mostly that it wasn't as interesting as the likes of Panzer Saga , Lunar etc. the dialogue was funny, but the battle system was nothing amazing, and the story, while good, wasn't amazing.
