No, really. Reading that article about the casual gaming being the future, I am seriously excited for the unavoidable fall of those games. This surge in poorly made games made to appeal to the 'masses' (In the same way that a TV Ad is) Is a fad, and I can't wait until it dies down, and all of the developers who decided to hop on the money train of crappy games go out of business. Not even a few years ago, casual didn't mean the same thing it does today. Today, casual games describe what can barely be described as a game, more of a 'push button, win nothing' simulation. No effort, no originality, nothing. Just awful games.

eh no harm done in them. And a doubt they will die down anytime soon. My parents do the farmville thing on facebook just as a tiem waster. I don't see why you are so hostile.

Casual games can be good, but that makes the sordid quality of them even more apparent. I don't know if there will be a fall, though. As long as people buy them, they will never go away. However, I don't feel they are hurting the industry. There are still good games out there, and that is all that matters.

Just as long as casual games stay the way they are and don't take over the market I'm fine with them.

i dont think its really a fad i just think game developers are trying to branch out to people who arent gamers yet and get them playing games. i see no harm. as long as they continue tocreate titles that appeal tothere longtime fans in the first place they can make as many of these 'casual' games as they want. some of them are actually even fun. :)

What's wrong with casual games? I love my Xbox and all of the great games I have for it, but sometimes I just want to play something simple. Playing Bejeweled on my PC or Puzzle Quest. I love the hidden object games. They isn't a whole lot to any of those games, but sometimes I want something to just dawdle with; I don't always want an involved story or complex mechanics. The same reason that sometimes I play RPGs and then play extremely linear shooters. Variety is the spice of life.

It's so sad that the term "casual" now means "terrible".

I agree. The terms thrown around on forums are getting blurry it seems because people misuse them so often. There are: shovelware games, deep games, and easier games. Casual simply means easy to play games not 'bad'.

I must admit i felt the same way towards casual games, thinking they were destroying the industry and hoping the fad would fade with time. Now i have a different prospective. The real eye opener for me was when my sister, who hasnt played a video since NES, calls me up and asked should she get a Wii. Not just her but several of my other friends who arent gamers in the slightest all buying a video game console for the first time. Granted it's not my system of preference but now i can play mario kart with my sister who lives hundreds of miles away. And who knows, maybe we'll be playing Gran Turismo online one day.

I guess the point i'm trying to make is this: Casual gamers are people who never would have considering gaming as a hobby anyways. Now with development of the "casual" gamer, they're finally able to enjoy what we have been enjoying for years and in doing so making gaming more appealing to the mainstream.

You can easily say that most casual games are shovelware AND easy.

I can't wait for this "Testosterone filled everything must look gritty and dark full with blood and has to be realistic to be good fad" to be over as well to the casual games that can't seem to be good except for Wii Sports (seriously tahts the only one I have enjoyed thats "casual").

I kinda miss games that aren't trying to mimic the real world.....that's the reason I play games to get away from this hell whole.

You can easily say that most casual games are shovelware AND easy.

You can also say that of games from all genres on every system.
There are some genuinely great casual games out there, and they're reaping in huge amounts of money, so it's not just a fad that's about to die.

If anything, I'm more worried about the casualisation of 'hardcore' gaming - I don't like it when games hold my hand, or regenerate my health when I make mistakes, or whatever.

Reply to OP: Let em stay. Nothing bad about them. There's plenty of "good" games to go around. Its not like they're harming anything. As long as fun, exciting games stay around, I'm not really worried.

I'm sick of all these over-used forum words. Troll, casual, fail etc all over-used. It's not like there's no hardcore games out just because some companies are appealing to non-gamers, there's just now a larger variety of games.

Back in the ol' days, the casual game was Tetris.

Which was worthy for anyone to play.

These days, casual games feels like games for people with 2 digit IQs or single digit age.

I can't really say I have a problem with them myself. There's more then enough games for me to enjoy so who am I to say what should and shouldn't get made. They have just as much right to get what they enjoy as much as anyone else and besides there are some that I like to play and they can be just as good as anything else.

Yes casual means easy not bad. I wouldn't know about shovelware because I don't buy that crap.
