It's probably that certain specific model of HDTV you tried that had the problem. The first LCD TV I bought (back in 2006) was the special "Symphonic" one that was the black friday one from Wal-Mart.

I got it home, and while movies were "ok" on it, Super Mario World lagged to the point that it literally was close to a second from the time I hit the button to the time Yoshi stuck out his tongue. The very next day the tv went back to Wal-Mart and I explained that while the physical tv itself was fine, games were half the reason I got it, and they did not work.

The problem is what's referred to as "response time" - Plasma screens - at least when they were new - were always better with their response time than LCD's. As time has gone on, there are now 60Hz and 120Hz LCD tv's that tend not to have that problem. Too-high of a response time causes the video to lag or "ghost" where things are so slow they blur.

Edit: I should be clear that 60 and 120 Hz is not what I was referring to as response time, that is called "refresh rate" - response time is the number with ms (milliseconds) after it in the specs of the tv. Try to find one that is either 5ms or better yet, 2ms as that will provide the quickest time and the clearest picture when things are in motion.

I understand since this is SNES-related - the topic being in Legacy Platforms, but you may also want to mention the problem / ask for advice in the Audio/Video Hardware forum as there are a lot more technically-savvy people there who may be able to explain the problem better than I can.

Basically I went from November of 2006 till November of 2007 using my old 36" RCA SDTV due to the problem I mentioned in my last post. It was in November of 2007 that I got a really reasonble deal on a Sony Bravia LCD and relegated my SDTV to the other room. I use the HDTV for HD stuff like PS3, Xbox 360, Xbox, and as my PC monitor, while the SDTV has all my "SD" consoles connected to it. Though they do work just as well on both screens, there's more space for more systems in the other room.

I know its sad just look for like a small old tube tv at a yard sale, plug in that boom all set. Cause the hd tvs are too advanced for an older system like that.

My new 46 inch LED-HDTV has no problem whatsoever with all legacy consoles i've tried so far. I've only heard about this kind of problems when people cheap out and buy the least expensive HDTV's out there.

Don't cheap out, is my advice.

i dunno man, I play my NES on a cheapo 32" LCD HDTV and it works pretty good. I use the composite cables, so it doesnt look so great (or maybe is just a really old nes), but it plays just fine, no lag or anything. I got to the last level on Super Mario Bros. yesterday actually :-)

edit: oh and FYI, you can still play games on your old CRT tvs. You dont HAVE to play SNES, NES, Genesis, etc on your fancy HDTV. they look better on older CRTs, so why not just play them that way? but you dont want to play Xbox360/PS3 games on an old square tv, since the games are designed for 16:9 ratio (rectangle), higher resolution, and text will be nearly impossible to read on some games (i.e. Dead rising)

my 32 inch Sony Bravia HDTV is just fine with older games, I try to use the best av cables (which here is RGB SCART, same as component) and also keep the games in a 4:3 ratio (unless there is a widescreen option) and they look and play just fine.

HDTV's are not too advanced for older consoles. You can plug in a GameCube's AV cables into a Snes and N64. There are options. However, I prefer standard television sets rather than high definition ones.

The gun issue is why I'm wary of getting a new TV. I can just keep the old one, but right now I don't have the room to hook them both up.

see now thats a real problem. I keep my old tube tv in my bedroom, and my HDTV (for my xbox360) is in the living room. Gotta have the old tube tv for the old games. Just wait on getting a new bigger tv til you have room for both. that's my suggestion.

It depends on the TV. We have an NES plugged into ours and it works fine.

Ahh, but a nice 32in Samsung would be soooo nice. I so want a flat panel TV...This tube TV is such a piece of garbage...

Taking a look at TV options, it seems that TV sets no longer offer S-Video. It's a terrible shame. I almost acquired a little HDTV from SEARS that had S-Video, but they sold it while I had it under layaway.
