Sense i started playing my xbox 360. I feel as if i play games for the wrong reasons.
I used to play games for the story and replay value and beat games several times back on PS2, N64, Game Boy, ect. Now and days, the only games i replay are Multi player games, or fighting games for well multi player reasons lol or to just beat the tar out of the PC. There are only 4 games on xbox i have played for the story that i cant on another system, Halo, Fear, Resident Evil 5, Alan Wake, Mass Effect.
i know RE5 and Mass Effect came to the PS3 but that was a year later after they released. I have 33 games on the xbox and none i have played again except those games i mention and Multi player games...

And i started whoring achievements when i lost my first account... i lost so much data and i noticed the achievements and i just started trying my hardest to get them. i mean **** I got 48,000 points in the score of a year and a half, thats a looooooot of wasted time when my friends still have there profiles and have just as much or almost as much as mine and they have been playing for 3-4 years...
I have been pondering if i should get rid of my xbox or at least most of my games and just get a PS3, i get bored of online games fast and i enjoy it more playing in the same room with my friends, Online play doesn't interest me so much unless my friends play. which only 3 of them do.

Am i playing games for the wrong reason? when i hardly enjoy them. Feels like a waste of time and money. Should i sell my xbox or at least most of the games ?

Life is something you only have once so enjoy it. If you enjoy playing multiplayer games or grinding out achievements then by all means go for it.

I have a similar problem, not with achievement whoring, or only playing multiplayer games, but with the 'friends' I play games with. I used to be able to buy a muliplayer FPS (the oringinal CoD for instance) and i'd get a good 2+ years out of it. Now there is some new game my friends want to try every 3-6 months. I only play online to play with them, but they aren't playing much anymore? What's the point? I think I'll stick to story driven games for now until something really good comes along.

I'm sick of the recycled trash of CoD, Battlefield, MoH, etc. What ever happened to expansion packs? Instead of making a new one every year why not release some Xpacs and let the community run with it? Oh yeah...right...

Anyway, please, Duke Nukem. Save me. Or anyone. The FPS genre is horribly stale...it's so bad I've got cottonmouth. Why can't these companies recycle RTCW - which actually did things right (MP).

Why spend time on something you don't enjoy, unless it's a necessity to living such as work? You're under no obligation. I once used to hold onto all my old game under some strange sense of obligation as if I MUST have fun replaying them at some point, but then after sitting there gathering dust on the shelves for a few years, I traded them in. No shame in doing so. So just do what you want. If you find yourself forcing yourself to play, something's not right. Perhaps your tastes are changing, priorities are shifting, or you're simply growing out of gaming.

Maybe you should take a break from gaming for awhile. Kind of like going cold turkey. Don't sell your consoles or games yet.

People play games for a variety of reasons. Only the individual can decide which reasons are right or wrong for themselves. Play whichever games on whatever systems for reasons that best suit you.

I agree with that. I've been hopping around from FPS to FPS for years now and each time a new MP focused one comes around I find myself getting bored with it rather quickly. I enjoyed BBC2 but then friends moved on to other shooters.

I played Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament 2004 for years, and now there's a new one all the damn time. The game never expands either, Black Ops feels just like MW2 to me but with different skins.

Duke Nukem is looking sweet though :)

I kind of feel the same way. When I play a game that lacks achievements (Xbox, PS2, etc.) I feel like I have no reason to play the game. I need to break this habit.

Erm if you're having fun the reason doesn't matter, but as I see that you aren't, then I suggest starting fresh with some games outside the bland genre(s) you obviously do not enjoy any longer.

Really? Who cares?!?!?!? The real reason to play games is to have fun. Doesn't matter what aspect of it makes it fun for you, as long as you are having fun.

Pretty much. I liked BFBC2 also. But I wasn't good at it. Actually, I was pretty bad at it. I can't afford to update my GPU every couple months so I'm always at a disadvantage. I'm sick of 'realistic' shooters, because they aren't really realistic at all. There aren't any Rambos in Iraq. Not to mention I am colour blind with yellows and greens so I have a real hard time picking out enemies unless they are right in front of me. I also have troubles distinguishing friend from foe ecause they look exactly the same to me, and by the time the red indicator pops up I'm already dead.

I can only pay $69.99 or whatever for the same game so many times (If I wanted to play a game like Counter-Strike, I would have bought Counter-Strike). At least sports games have roster updates. I miss the days or Return to Castle Wolfenstein (I played that online with 56 K, and I still had more fun playing that game than any MP game today, nothing compares), and Soldier of Fortune (the first two).

Quake and Unreal are a bit before my time. I just know those games are pretty much the grand daddies of multiplayer. When Quake Arena and Unreal 2000 or whatever came out I was still playing 007: Goldeneye. My cousin knew some of the pro gamers from Arena, used to play a gainst a couple of them, so I know them a bit from watching him play.

Other than that, I think I'll stick to the new incarnations of Fallout, and Elder Scrolls. Maybe I'll trade my Black Ops coaster in for BulletStorm.

I partially blame the consoles. It's not really the consoles fault, but before Call of Duty: Modern Warfare the maps were so huge and so wide open that you could spend rounds walking in circles looking for that last guy (if you tried to spray and pray in Brecourt or one of those Snow Maps you were lunch for the snipers and sharpshooters). Or if you were the last guy alive and had to plant the bomb, you had to play smart...spray and pray wasn't going to get you anywhere except dead. Maps are too condensed, and if the game is Bad Company, the are badly rendered or designed. Also, TDM sucks - it's like Geometry, what's the point?

I feel like achievements took the intrinsic value out of games for many, many people. Remember the good ol' days when you would explore the world of an RPG just to find new dungeons or get great items, rather than just doing it for the "set foot in every area of the game" acheivement?

I also worry that true gamers spend too much time on their 360 and not with other consoles due to acheivement whoring.

You should look into getting a GBA or DS, they have terrific RPGs, with some to appeal to both hardcore and casual gamers. They should get you away from the gamerscore and back sucked into the game world.

Iv been in the same place, so I went cool turkey for around 1 year, Didn't buy 12 month online, started to only play solo as I feel that im only playing for 2 things, Fun of crose by also to try to get higher achievements, I think it's best that you take a break, best thing I did, Can't rly play much anyway, Working full time, have a gf to take care of and spend time with, so I don't get to many hours for my self when it comes to playing games anymore, I'll do it time to time under the week but not much, before it was 4-6 hours per day, now its maybe 10 hours a week, if even that... I love gaming, started young as much people have, and coulden't stop, got rly bad when I started to play WoW ( blaming my bro for that ) and spent must of the nights playing the games... Now, I haven't played WoW for over 2 years.... But yea, either take a break, but don't sell your games and console, or maybe invest in something new, Wii or DS....

People play video games cause its fun, it's a entertaining hobby. IF you can't find joy,fun or the reason why you got into gaming then sadly you might have to look for a different hobby.

I've been gaming for about 17 years and so far theres no signs of me quitting as a gamer, in fact this year pretty much reminds me why I love being a gamer with all of the good games coming out.

I think there should be an option to turn achievements off. It takes me out of the game when I get to a cutscene or do something and a randome bubble pops up on the screen that says "I've tipped by dally-10G" or something dumb like that. They always try to be funny and creative with the names when I don't really care in the first place.

I recommend surfing unless you're afraid of sharks. So much fun and you get a lot of sun. I'm being serious. Sounds like you're burnt out. I would take a break and come back to gaming when you're ready. For now, go out and have some fun or whatever you like doing out there.. I've taken a long hiatus from gaming. Once for 5 years. Then a couple years later on. As a matter of fact, I didn't play any games during my high school years at all.
