I really do not understand what people get out of the combat in these games. Actually playing the game mechanically is not fun, I really do not get why all Japanese games have to do that weird character movement thing of the character moving off center and then they camera follows a few paces later. It is just really annoying, games like Final Fantasy 13 do the same thing only they have the really long strides as well. Why can't we have one to one movement like western games do? It feels so much more responsive and just nicer to play, Dark Souls ends up feeling really dated as a result.
The actual combat is garbage though, it is about bugging out the A.I and trying to break the game. It doesn't feel satisfying, but more about discovery on which bit of the level can you break the A.I on. I wouldn't say the combat is good or fun, it just feels so clunky and slow and really frustrating.
Mount and Blade is a game I look to for third person melee combat, it gets it done so perfectly. Left Click controls one arm, right click controls the other, then WASD you use to choose the direction you want to block or swing in. It is so responsive and one to one with your actions using the mouse and keyboard. It is all in real time with freedom to move and hit where you want. Dark Souls is all animation based, so you hit in predetermined areas and you feel like you have no control, I hate Japanese games because they always do this animation first combat. You know the games where you press a button to melee someone and instant kill them, it is the same with quick knives in COD... I hate that crap! I want the freedom to hit anywhere I want, you know like CS where you get the knife out and you stab where you want, not press a button to win.
I just wish developers looked at Mount and Blade, not Dark Souls for the combat. I understand what is potentially fun with the game, I like hard games and trial and error is fun in Dark Souls, what I hate though is the combat.
