I bought my ipod back in 2008 and I thought I would never need my cds again. Well my computer kick the bucket and I had all of my music on it in itunes. So I called Apple for help to transfer all of my music back to my new pc on itunes. Apple mislead me and it caused me to delete all of my music except what I had purchased from itunes. I was pissed I didn't think I needed my cds anymore so I let friends keep them and some were misplaced and scratched. I had a massive cd collection. Now every time I run a recovery on my computer I have to worry about loosing my music. I know how to transfer my music without loosing it but it's just the idea that my ipod could die or something could go wrong.

I had a ton of gaming content on my ps3 and after thousands of hours of game play if finnally kicked the bucket. I was trying to platinum Dark Souls and I lost all of my data. I was two trophies away.

I have become a hoarder of physical media. I buy tons of blu rays dvds cds. If I can get it on disc I will buy it. I hate digital media with a passion. I can buy physical media dirt cheap. I buy used blu rays dvds and cds a all the time. I also hoard video games.

I hate digital media. I refuse to buy games digitally from psn or live.

Why didn't you back up your music collection? Any digital media you have (whether copied from physical or downloaded) should be backed up on at least one external device for exactly this reason.

@pyro1245:

That was cold! lol....anyway, back on topic. I'm one of those people who are still 50/50 with the whole digital media debate! Sometimes I'll buy the hardcopy, sometimes I'll go with the digital version.

I feel your pain TC but you should have backed your stuff up.

It is correct that Digital only is bad , but if you backup your content then its a lot more safe than any physical media ever will be.

I mostly stick to physical media (steam is really the only digital distributor I use), if nothing else just so I have a backup copy of all my games and music, and as far as my movies and anime go I enjoy collecting the boxes and watching space on my shelf grow.

I feel your pain. I don't hate digital myself but I definitely prefer getting my stuff on physical format when possible even if it costs significantly more to do so. I still buy all my movies and music on blu-ray and cd. I do buy digital games but that only if that's the only option. It's nice that digital is an option especially for old out of print games but I definitely don't ever want to see it replace physical formats.

Yes, I know the importance of digital game. Most of the time I prefer to play all online games like golf, tennis, football and pool games.

I think there are a lot of caveats to this statement that are not addressed by many people in favor of blanket statements like "Digital only is bad for gamers and other consumers". There are benefits and drawbacks to digital only media; it's not a universal bad.

Any benefits that come from digital you still get from a digital and physical market but you lose the benefits from physical copies in the digital only method.

I've heard this from so many people. "I have copied all my music on my hard drive and thrown away all those CDs! :3"

The next day their PC gets a virus or is blasted by a power surge and they hit the bottle.

Bottom line: keep your physical media. Even if you don't want them, they are a safety net not to lose your content, and on top of that they may be worth a fortune one day if complete and in good conditions. If you are really desperate to get rid of them, give them away (like OP did) or sell them, but don't fucking chuck them in the bin, you philistines.

Agreed, I have converted about 80-90% of all my dvds and CDs to digital! But I still have all of my original disc. Also, I was a Dj back in the 90's....I still have my turntables and all of my vinyl records

There are benefits to digital only markets, such as small developers self-publishing titles directly to online marketplaces or freely on the internet. This is something that cannot be done in a digital/physical market where small developers cannot cover production costs to make physical copies and larger publishers don't want to take a risk on swallowing that cost. There are already tons of digital only games that are only possible because they are only distributed digitally.

I think you're confusing digital distribution with the concept of DRM which are two distinct concepts, and while DRM is usually a consequence of digital distribution, not all digital distribution includes DRM and if you so desired you could create a physical disc or save the files to a portable jumpdrive and magically and then miraculously you now have a "physical product".

For those games, it is a digital only market.

Either way a digital only market doesn't necessarily mean that you cannot create a physical product. Those aren't inherent limitations in a digital only market; those are limitations placed in effect by companies trying to regulate a digital only market, something that is harder said than done on an open platform.

Awesome, that's the way to do it.
