Doom 3 was pretty spooky, but only because it was dark. But it didn't generate fear because I had high-tech weaponry to blow things up. Resident Evil 4 was freaky at times, especially getting my head chopped off by that chainsaw guy...but that was more disturbing than scary. And Salazar's mutated form made me jump out of my seat when that venus fly trap thingy ate me up. But still, all the weapons and third-person point of view made the game more like target practice than being a scary game. Also, I know that these games are all based on a fictional setting, so that sense of realism wasn't there, even though the game was realistic.

Than I finally played Condemned, and I think the devs got it pretty good with scaring you. I think it's because you don't have guns or high-tech gadgets to survive. But you use primitive, melee weapons like pipes, shovels, fire-axes, and crowbars to kill the bad guys. And the physics are quite realistic. Also, you deal with psychos that actually exist in the real world and you play as a FBI agent taking them down. So that sense of realism also takes up the scary volume up a notch.

Condemned doesn't scare me, but I do have to say that's it's the best example of a game that generates fear and is the closest thing to being called a truly scary game. At the end, it is still a game which is why it doesn't scare me, but it is very close.

So I have to say that Condemned is scarier than the Resident Evil series, Doom 3, FEAR, or even Fatal Frame. It does take up the survival/horror genre to another level.

RE4 wasn't scary at all. try the silent hill games, preferably 3 is you want a scary game.

I don't think any of those hold a candle to Clive Barker's Undying.

Some games that aren't necessarily even meant to be scary, have some very scary levels. The haunted mansion and condemned hospital in Vampire The Masquerade come to mind. The "Shalebridge Cradle" (an abandoned orphanage reformed asylum) in Thief 3 is legendary. To this day you'll find new threads in forums for Thief with people complaining about how they can't bring themselves to finish the level.

All in all, the big key to allowing yourself to get into these types of games and ultimately allow yourself to be scared, is to not play during the day, not play with any lights on, not play with the volume on low or with background noise, and do not play lazily on the couch or bed while 10 feet away from the screen. You follow that advice, and even the tamest of gameswill make you jump from time to time.

Yeah, i agree, Condemned is the most "scary" game ive played. It gets you to stay on the tip of your tows all the time simply becouse what you said about the weapons, and gadgets, made a hugh diffrence. F.E.A.R is scary and all, and i had my most scared moment in that game, but Condemned is just something else that make me have a worse creeped out feeling formt he beginng to the end.

I agree. :)
There were parts in Condemned where I just had to take a breather so I could go on. It messed me up! :(

I only played the Codemned-Demo (the game isn´t that easy to get in Germany)but it was a lot scarier then any other game I played since Silent Hill 1...maybe because SH2-4,all REs (exept the 1st back then...the dogs...),and Fatal Frame wasn´t scary at all.Doom3 was pretty good, but just in the beginning of the game.Codemned has a really scary-realistic thing to it (if you got a 5.1DD-System the sound is AWESOME)which the other games totally miss.

Condemned is one of those games I could only play for an hour or two at a time, and I can't wait for part two.

Though I enjoyed the game, I will make a point of never buying the sequel after what the head of the development team was saying about them working closely with the ESRB to ensure the game doesn't face what happened to manhunt2. Also the bull he said about manhunt2 being a game in the real world (thus implying it deserved the AO rating) whereas condemned2 is purely fictional annoyed me excessively.

So yea, I do wish the sequel does very badly, purely as a matter of principle.

Man did I ever love Condemned it was a very cool game and pretty freaky as well. Also much like the developer's other title F.E.A.R. the AI was nicely done. I'm definately looking forward to grabbing the sequel.

Another game I have my eye on that I'm hoping will be scary is Clive Barker's Jericho. I checked out the trailer on Marketplace and it looks pretty cool.

I have trouble getting into the horror genre of games, because I just can't find enjoying a game that tries to scare me every minute or two. I try every now and then, but most of the time, I try to avoid them.

Condemned was an overall great experience. Just didn't find it that scary or creepy through most of the game. But it had some really good moments.I still hold the Fatal Frame series at the top of the list, moreso if played in the dark with a good surround system or wearing headphones. I remember not being able to sleep once after playing Fatal Frame II with headphones. Project Zero nailed the sound so great in all three games. And they also started getting more and more clever with scares as the series progressed. Also the little details they added throughout the games added even further to the experience.

the RE4 was funny, special that salazar guy.fatal frame and silent hill are just ok.

i think clive barker's jericho gonna be one of the most scariest games ever. i hope it does.

but till now the only game that i really scared was RE2 when i played i was only 10 and i scared as hell, even it was hard for me to go to bathroom =P
