^^. I see many people on the forums express real hate about Final Fantasy XIII. I see things changing in a good direction. For example

1. Story isn`t concentrated on one or two characters(i.e. FF8,FF9, and FF10)

2. No leveling up

3. Combat system looks like it very fast and innovative to me at least

4. Some characters didn`t follow the usual Japanese aesthetics like Fang, Lightning, and Sazh.

There are elements that I wish weren`t in there like linearity, tutorials, and fixed parties but those don`t cast aside this game. I know many people said that this is piece of crap all the way to this doesn`t bring nothing new to the table. I have also played many other Final Fantasies which to me brought the same old gameplay and story(love story) this one will change the course of the franchise. Gameplay to me was action based and was to me very interesting which actually could bring in more fans that never liked RPGs lately and that where all RPGs are going Japanese or Western. If anybody talking how JRPGs bring nothing new to the table then nobody has played Nier which blows always all JRPG`s conventions and still got underappreciated to me. Nier was like God of War meets Final Fantasy the professionals today are all about graphics in which why it got mixed reviews. I agree FFXIV was rushed and disappointing but is now getting a reboot which I hope that Square Enix has learned it lesson. Final Fantasy Versus XIII could be liked Mass Effect and go the shooter route which would probably get more people angry. If a western studio did get their hands on Final Fantasy which some want it would most likely be obsidian because they are also developing Dungeon Siege III. I can also remember a short time people were mad about a certain franchise getting rebooted by a western developer and how the main character look i.e Devil May Cry. If Obsidian develops the next Final Fantasy how would it look and how would it feel and would look Final Fantasy like or Western-style RPG like ask those things to yourselves people. Agree with me or not? Why?

You're fighting a battle that has already been lost on these forums dude. I loved FFXIII myself though. Just do what I do and admire it quietly from behind a rock.

This. I had to drag myself through this game until I finished it. I have no interest in every playing it again. Square has gone from a company where I bought every game of theirs that I could get my hands on to the only company where if I see their name on something I am hesitant.

I actually enjoyed parts of the game's first half, particularly the segments in Palumpolum and Nautilus. As the game went on, though, the "dungeons" started getting more and more boring and that was disappointing. Also, the story just wasn't memorable at all. I probably would've enjoyed it more if it wasn't called Final Fantasy.

Don't forget about the music. Music is a key in videogames and since ff8 the ff music suck ass, they are not as memorable as older ones.

It's the same with most game songs around these days. Simply put, the complexity of them makes them a lot harder for the mind to comprehend. The music in pretty much all square enix games at the moment is up there with the best.

But anyway, it's not particularly hate with all square enix games, it's just the final fantasy franchise. It hasn't produced a good game in years which isn't just a spin off from an old title.

I think that if FFXIII succeeded at anything, it was definitely the music. Best soundtrack of 2010 for me. Masashi Hamauzu definitely outdid himself.

The whole structure of the game is very poorly designed, from the tunnel vision gameplay to the poorly introduced characters, combined with a story that it´s not bad but it´s told in an uninteresting fashion, the need to read the codex to understand what is going on since the actual in game stuff makes a very poor job at doing so,among many other minor things.

Personaly I´m not a fan of the combat myself, and the voice acting is still(like the latest FF games) horrible.

But it´s not a bad game overall,it´s just extremely underwhelming, especialy considering the expectations I had.

I loved Final Fantasy XIII. I do like open FF titles, but FF13 is about a group on the run, so it wouldn't really make sense. It suited the story. I actually preferred the Linear sections to the open world area, probably because there wasn't much 'life' to GP. I mean, it was full of life, but no depth like you'd find in a town full of locals with dialogue & stuff.

Because it's severely inferior to previous titles.

My cons:

  • Characters. I don't feel connected to them. Too much unnecessary drama.
  • Lack of immersion because very little exploration. No townz, hidden stuff and side quests(not those hunting quests)
  • Too much reliance on database too explain important part of plot.
  • Lack of control in battle system.
  • Equipment upgrade felt tack on or lack of importance. I can finishe the game without upgrading.
  • Crystarium system is pointless if I can't customize each character the way I want.

Pros:

  • Fast battle.
  • Nice soundtrack.
  • Superb graphic.
  • Sort of difficult bosses.

meh, i liked the characters of ff13 although they could have toned down snow's character "the I'M GOING TO BE A HERO" archetype is played out, and yes as someone said the group was on the run but the going down the hall structure of the game got pretty tedious, also the story was a little to redundant and confusing, but i liked it, hopefully versus 13 is better

FFXIII was a very different FF, as well as a more linear. I guess the combination of both of these hurt it for many.

I enjoyed the game quite a bit myself. I loved the combat system and the production values from presentation to music were fantastic. Had they fleshed out the story and characters more and added a little more side content, the game could have been a masterpiece, but overall FFXIII is still a good, quality game.

You want to know why FFXIII is such a mess? It's because Square honestly has NO IDEA what the hell they are doing on their part!

The only two good things that came out of FF...actually, more like three, were the following. One, the visuals are incredible. No doubt, this is some of their best work as far as visuals and cinematics go. The world and characters models they craeted specfically for the game is just breathtaking! Second, the soundtrack was actually memorable and I enjoyed listening to it while I did my hardest to go through the game, which never happened. It makes me want to actually find a hard copy of the soundtrack itself! Third and finally, if there was good thing about FFXIII, it was also different. Like every Final Fantasy in the series (that one that part of the series, NOT the ones that are side-projects or spin-offs, such as Final Fantasy Tactics), this one also possesesd its own entity and tried to be different like the rest.

Beyond those three things, it became the second worst Final Fantasy in history! Now you might think this is a bold statement, but in my view, it's so damn true, you know? The battle system was dull and repetitve. I was not having fun sitting there and just mashing away at the attack button or switching different styles to fit the strategy needed. I'd rather play something like Tales Of Vesperia, where the battles were fun and engaging, not this crap! Second, the story isn't that good, as far as I've played, and the characters I was not emotionally attached to. A good role-playing game has you glued to the characters and their stories, along with the main story, from start to finish and I certainly didn't get that feeling with Final Fantasy XIII. The game is also too linear for the first thirty hours or so and you know something? That irritates me! In other Final Fantasy games, you're able to branch off and do sidequests or compete in games, like in Final Fantasy VII. Not here though and that irritates me a lot. The characters themselves were not engaging, one in particular was annoying, but admittedly funny (That would be Vanille, but only through several lines that mde me die of laughter that hard). I had a hard time sticking with the cast and believing in their cause.

Oh and I forgot too - the Crystarium system. Final Fantasy X anyone? I could already see the writing on the wall on that one - if you continued to fight enemies in one room for hours on end, I'm sure you would be able to max out your party's stats and abilities before the end and it would be too easy. When I played the game, the only challenging fights I've had to deal with were the summoned monsters; that was very different and I actually enjoyed it. Oh yeah - that was the thing about battles I hated; you could only play the lead character and if he or she dies, it's game over. That, my friends, is such a retarded concept! Why Square even bothered with such an idea is beyond me! Just so much bad going for Final Fantasy XIII that I just wish that Square Enix never went ahead with the game, like how they should have not gone with that game called Final Fantasy VIII. What a piece of **** that game turned out to be! An atrocious Final Fantasy as I remember it!

And don't get me started on Final Fantasy XIV - that was such a horrible decision in the first place! Should have been called Final Fantasy Online 2 or something like that, not be part of the main series! But that said, these are some of the reasons why Final Fantasy XIII is such a hated game by me. I would expect Square Enix to do SO MUCH BETTER and yet, they failed on all accounts. It may be beautiful in terms of graphics and sound, not to mention being different, but they should have gone back to the games that really worked and stayed with that formula. Because of both games, I have given up on the series until they get their act together and create a Final Fantasy that's worth something. FFVIII destroyed my faith in the series, but FFIX and X revived my faith. Then XI, XII, XIII, and now XIV killed it again. Square should have known better! Shame on them! Oh and before I forget, if people love those games, that's awesome! More power to you! But I could not bear to go through the experience with Final Fantasy XIII and traded it in. Haven't regretted it!

FFX III is an example of poor brand management, they changed so much of the game that they alienated a very large portion of the fan base both in the east and west.

My main beef

Story was mediocre and very poorly executed. The dialogue was painfully chessy and contrived

Characters were some of the worst in franchise history( Vanille , snow hope)

Battle system was flawed , (previous games gave you complete control over what to do )

Linerity was taken to absurd levels corridors of death and boredom is a fitting description to the design

No interaction with the world/NPC

No side quests worth mentioning besides those very obvious last minute "hunt" fetch quests

Its the first final fantasy i struggled to finish, the first I have only played once and the game that has final caused me to abandon Square enix.

Having said all this its still a decent game just a very very bad FInal Fantasy.

In the end, FFXIII was a victim of its own hype. SE practically cemented its fate by announcing the game almost 5 years before it was released. There is no situation in existence where that is a good idea. I put over 80 hours into the game myself. Everything from the strategic combat to the gorgeous music, FFXIII was truly a marvelous game in my eyes. It saddens me that there are people who didn't enjoy it as much as I did.

Again, there is nothing wrong with you enjoying the game to its fullest. Not at all. Some people love Final Fantasy VIII for everything that it is, and I'm definitely fine with that. I just have a lot of issues with XIII that just need to be fixed overall before it can become a better experience overall. The last FF game that I had a blast with was FFX. After that, the magic was gone.

I don't hate all SE games. I do not like FF13 due to the terrible/annoying characters with cringe worthy dialogue. Serah!!

I also do not like how the game takes 30 hours or so to really open up, from the battle system to the environments. TBH I'm not sure why they bothered to include a HUD map for the first 12 chapters. Just go straight.

I really enjoyed FFXIII myself, I thought it was a great game overall. It looked and sounded excellent, I really enjoyed the combat system, it had a good story, the cast of characters were interesting, and there were some cool enemy/boss fights. It would have been nice for it to have more freedom in exploration but the mostly linear design didn't bother me too much.

As for the other games they've published/developed I found them to be not bad but I'd really like to see them work harder on bring some of their other franchises back into the spotlight especially the Mana series, Kingdom Hearts, and of course the Chrono series. I'm currently enjoying Dragon Quest IX but I'd really like to see it make a strong return to home consoles.

No matter whether or not the game was terrible, it could only have been a let-down because it didn't change anything.

Over the last few years, the games we play have changed a lot. The original ground-breakers have embraced nostalgia like never before, once-throwaway genres have become hot talking points. Pretty much every major series has evolved not just from a mechanical standpoint, but in terms of what they represent. Not only does Final Fantasy 13 not do this, but it goes back on the franchise's evolution. Practically the series' entire remit last gen was shifting from 'grandiose because it needs to be' interactive theatre to a more contained yet also more open-ended approach, but this latest instalment is all backward with a plotline so unnecessarily huge you can hardly see most of it.

I was very disappointed in the reviews for FFXIV though because I was so looking forward to it. It does sound like they are really going to try and fix it though so hopefully it'll be much better when the console versions hit because I'd still like to pick it up.

I enjoyed it as much as FFX and more than FFXII but it hasn't managed to recapture what I loved about the series on the PS1 and before then. FF Crisis Core on the other hand did, although still not to the same extent but to be fair it was a spin off.

I want a score for each character that captures their personality, more options to customise my characters both in skills/roles and equipment, and above all else I want more free roaming exploration (bring back world maps!).

I loved the game personally. The battle system was excellent and rewarding if done right. Story was just passable but i cant knock it since it is what you would expect from a game like this.

My sole complaint is not about anything in the game. It is about what is not in the game. You get stone missions and Toise farming. Thats it. Otherwise the game is entirely on rails.

I have always been enthralled with sidequests, secret weapons, spells, storylines etc etc. Often times, i end up enjoying side stuff more so than the regular part of the game. I just want to do everything there is to do and when that "everything to do" ends up amounting to little more than "beat the game" i am a bit disappointed.

I did however play through 3 times. Once originally with no help. Again with the intention of getting a platinum only to find out i sold an item and could not get treasure hunter and a 3rd time where i finally got the platinum.

Lost interest after FF-X, the linearity plus they couldn't do a good PC version.

Capcom showed them how it could have looked in DMC 4...now if they would just pay attention. *sigh*

I didn't think I'd like FFXIII as much as I actually did end up liking it, I thought maybe it'd go the route of other Japanese titles and be void of gameplay like maybe most of the development was wasted on cutscenes (like MGS4 or Lost Odyssey), but that didn't really happen and gameplay was challenging and I enjoyed it. The challenge at least kept me distracted from how linear it was. Once I did beat it though the game just turned into a grindfest to getting achievements and nothing much else. I much rather play a JRPG like Persona 3 or 4. Still, FFXIII was worth my time, and I enjoyed it at least.

I enjoyed the game on my first playthrough, but I've found that I have no desire to return to it whatsoever. SE seems to be trying to streamline the series a bit, which came out with positives and negatives.

I liked the fast paced battles and how quickly you were able to go in and out of combat. I thought the new system took away micromanaging your attacks in favor of a more broad view of combat; it was great sometimes, others I might've preferred something closer to the old style. The visuals were breathtaking and the soundtrack is top notch. The production values of this game were simply off the chart; SE knows how to do that part.

That being said, the linearity created some problems. I don't have a problem with linearity per se, (FFX was my favorite in the series and generally considered to be the most linear prior to XIII) but when you look back at the game, no place was memorable. As someone mentioned in an earlier post, it was like the locations had no life. FFX was linear, but you could at least explore towns and got a good feel for the setting of Spira. in FFXIII, it was like walking through a movie set with a bunch of sets with nothing behind them. Previous games had locations that felt alive and unique (like the slums in VII, or Balamb Garden in VIII), but not in XIII. I know that the story wasn't conducive to exploring towns, but that just makes the story a poor design decision.

I personally didn't care much for the story, and I liked a few of the characters, others not so much. The story seemed pretty basic in the end. "Oh look, adversity! I don't know if I can go on... but I must persevere!" and in the end they bind together and save the world against all odds! It just wasn't as deep or clever as previous ones. I thought the voice acting was good, but the script was pretty awful (see: Snow).

And as far as the gameplay, I know combat is supposed to be the bread and butter of RPGs, but man, I could've used for a break every now and then. The game was battle, battle, battle, battle, cutscene, battle, battle, cutscene, etc. I didn't think I was really that into exploration in video games, but now that it was gone completely, I realized how important it is, even if it's just a little bit of it.

All in all, a good game, but not up to par with previous ones in the series for the most part. I enjoyed it, but won't look back on it too fondly down the road, while I will continue to replay previous games in the series every now and then.

Well first i'd like to say that I see what your saying and I like FF13, however I know why plenty of people don't. You actually listed some reasons why. The fast paced combat is a step away from the turn based combat we've grown to love. The story focuses on too many perspectives rather than building serious feelings for the characters and you can't level up. I honestly prefer to level up as it feels more like an rpg.

On top of that, it makes you feel like you're accomplishing something. That's what I love about leveling-up. You're making your characters stronger with each level. In FFXIII, the only way to level up is through the Crystarium system and that's just too easy to do, provided that you've sat there and battled monsters for hours on end just to get all the attributes and spells needed. Doing that makes Final Fantasy XIII way too easy, therefore making the challenge from the game too easy.

1. Final Fantasy 7's story may have been concentrated on 1-2 characters, but not 9. Final Fantasy 9 had at least 8 characters in that game with GREAT stories and 3-4 of the major characters received equal time for their stories to develop. Next time dont just add FF titles like that without thinking. 2. A level up system would've been much better than the garbage skill system in FF13. 3. The combat system is really fast......because all you need to do is spam autoattack over and over until you win. Yeah, real fast....and game breaking.... 4. Usual Japanese aesthetics? I just want characters that I actually care about!! There was NOTHING interesting about the main character Lightning except that we have a female lead character in an FF series after so many blond males took the lead; but she was so empty. The characters were forgettable. How anyone could defend this pile of crap they call a game is beyond me. Even the developers admitted they dropped the ball on this one.

Metamania

On top of that, it makes you feel like you're accomplishing something. That's what I love about leveling-up. You're making your characters stronger with each level. In FFXIII, the only way to level up is through the Crystarium system and that's just too easy to do, provided that you've sat there and battled monsters for hours on end just to get all the attributes and spells needed. Doing that makes Final Fantasy XIII way too easy, therefore making the challenge from the game too easy.

Wouldn't sitting in one area and battling monsters for hours make most other RPG's easier too?

I don't see how the cysterium is any easier than level ups. Especially if you try to 100% complete each crysterium for each character. Either way your stats are increasing and your gaining new powers.

It is funny those that hate JRPG characters they strain to put every character into preset up baskets.
