You want to know why FFXIII is such a mess? It's because Square honestly has NO IDEA what the hell they are doing on their part!
The only two good things that came out of FF...actually, more like three, were the following. One, the visuals are incredible. No doubt, this is some of their best work as far as visuals and cinematics go. The world and characters models they craeted specfically for the game is just breathtaking! Second, the soundtrack was actually memorable and I enjoyed listening to it while I did my hardest to go through the game, which never happened. It makes me want to actually find a hard copy of the soundtrack itself! Third and finally, if there was good thing about FFXIII, it was also different. Like every Final Fantasy in the series (that one that part of the series, NOT the ones that are side-projects or spin-offs, such as Final Fantasy Tactics), this one also possesesd its own entity and tried to be different like the rest.
Beyond those three things, it became the second worst Final Fantasy in history! Now you might think this is a bold statement, but in my view, it's so damn true, you know? The battle system was dull and repetitve. I was not having fun sitting there and just mashing away at the attack button or switching different styles to fit the strategy needed. I'd rather play something like Tales Of Vesperia, where the battles were fun and engaging, not this crap! Second, the story isn't that good, as far as I've played, and the characters I was not emotionally attached to. A good role-playing game has you glued to the characters and their stories, along with the main story, from start to finish and I certainly didn't get that feeling with Final Fantasy XIII. The game is also too linear for the first thirty hours or so and you know something? That irritates me! In other Final Fantasy games, you're able to branch off and do sidequests or compete in games, like in Final Fantasy VII. Not here though and that irritates me a lot. The characters themselves were not engaging, one in particular was annoying, but admittedly funny (That would be Vanille, but only through several lines that mde me die of laughter that hard). I had a hard time sticking with the cast and believing in their cause.
Oh and I forgot too - the Crystarium system. Final Fantasy X anyone? I could already see the writing on the wall on that one - if you continued to fight enemies in one room for hours on end, I'm sure you would be able to max out your party's stats and abilities before the end and it would be too easy. When I played the game, the only challenging fights I've had to deal with were the summoned monsters; that was very different and I actually enjoyed it. Oh yeah - that was the thing about battles I hated; you could only play the lead character and if he or she dies, it's game over. That, my friends, is such a retarded concept! Why Square even bothered with such an idea is beyond me! Just so much bad going for Final Fantasy XIII that I just wish that Square Enix never went ahead with the game, like how they should have not gone with that game called Final Fantasy VIII. What a piece of **** that game turned out to be! An atrocious Final Fantasy as I remember it!
And don't get me started on Final Fantasy XIV - that was such a horrible decision in the first place! Should have been called Final Fantasy Online 2 or something like that, not be part of the main series! But that said, these are some of the reasons why Final Fantasy XIII is such a hated game by me. I would expect Square Enix to do SO MUCH BETTER and yet, they failed on all accounts. It may be beautiful in terms of graphics and sound, not to mention being different, but they should have gone back to the games that really worked and stayed with that formula. Because of both games, I have given up on the series until they get their act together and create a Final Fantasy that's worth something. FFVIII destroyed my faith in the series, but FFIX and X revived my faith. Then XI, XII, XIII, and now XIV killed it again. Square should have known better! Shame on them! Oh and before I forget, if people love those games, that's awesome! More power to you! But I could not bear to go through the experience with Final Fantasy XIII and traded it in. Haven't regretted it!
