Ok I want to buy a GTA game. The problem is, I'm a young teenager, its rated M, and the news bashes it so badly, so in my mom's mind, its completely innapropriate and the worst video game ever made. Please help me convince them otherwise that GTA isn't as bad as it's said to be and please give me any points, tips, suggestions so I can make a good arguement. Thanks!

Well, I guess you can argue that you'll be responsible with your school work, and whatever content in the game is not any worse that what you may see in R rated movies. Maybe you can also argue that the people who bash GTA are not credible sources, since Jack Thompson recently lost his license in Florida for many violations.

The M rating isn't just there to look pretty. If your parents don't want you, a child (yes, you're still a child believe it or not) to have access to adult entertainment, that's their choice. When you live on your own and pay for your own house and pay your own bills you can make youre own decisions.

Well considering the M rating is there to tell parents that they game is not for children your parents are doing the right thing in not allowing you to play it. Just because they are "games" doesn't mean that all of them are appropriate for children. I just recently beat Condemned: Criminal Origins and I would never in a million years allow my future children to even witness the game let alone play it at anything earlier than 18 years of age. Even I was unsettled by some of the things in the game.

Just be happy your parents are being good parents.

These topics are funny "I need help convincing my parents"

hahahha, its like you think we know some secret that will convince your parents that you won't become a murdering psychopath. just wait till you are older, there are reasons for the M rating, and its to stop kids from playing what they shouldn't

The M rating is there for a reason, so kids do not see inappropriate content. I mean seriously, out of the older group here, who would want their 13 year old son watching some guy with a few "ladies of the night" in his car? All I can say is that we cannot help you convince your rents, you gotta figure out how to do so on your own. Ahh, the nostalgia :)

If you can look at a game like GTA. A game that glorifies stealing, murder, killing police officers, sex with prostitues, random acts of violence, among other things. If you can look at a game like that and say "its not as bad as people claim" then that says youre not ready to play a game like this.

Couldn't agree with you more, nicely put.

Sorry mate, I know you were probably after a little more support on a gaming forum, but the ratings are there for a reason and if you're parents say no, respect their decision and wait. There's plenty more games you could play

GTA4 isn't that bad, its hardly the worst game ever made. It just gets a bad rep from the media. Yes they say some foul language but in all reality just walk down the hallway at your school and you hear much worse things. There isn't any gore in the game at all, like some other popular games. And many parents think of GTA as a cop killing game. It's not in a sense, there is no point in the game where they say oh go kill some cops, no its usually just "oh cops are here, run away". Some people say you are playing a bad guy and that's bad, yes the main character is a bad person, but think of it this way, In movies like The godfather, Dark Knight, or other famous movies who did you root for the whole movie, the bad guys. There is no nudity you see more sexual content in TV commercials. You can shoot whomever you want but the game never tells you "hey go on a civilian killing rampage", no the whole game you are killing other criminals. And killing AI is not bad you don't feel emotion when killing these characters because they aren't real people. Over all I think people just freak out that its bad but in reality its not that much.

Why do I get the feeling you're 14-17 years old?

Grand Theft Auto is rated M for Mature, Gamers know this, Media knows this, most parents know this and Rockstar embraces it. Meaning that even though it's just a game and it doesn't tell you to "Go chop up a woman with a chainsaw" it however doesn't take away the choice to do so. Because of that it is inappropriate for children or anyone below the rating limit. One can whine about how unfair it is and so on but that's just the way it is.

As for the topic creator, Wait until you're old enough and then get the game.

I honestly don't mind teens playing M rated games. They are more than ready unless they've been shielded all their life from everything.

I think you're missing out on some of the more important reasons why the game is more inappropriate than most games for children. You can commit atrocious acts against innocent people virtually consequence free. If you go to jail all you have to do is bribe the cops and you're out on the street. If you get shot in the face you just take a trip to the hospital and you're out the next day. There just aren't real consequences for your actions.

Tell them you are smart enough to know that it's just fantasy and that they don't have to worry about you going out in real life and jacking cars and shooting people.

Funny, that's what every kid tries to tell their parents. Most kids aren't half as smart as they think they are.

You know...even if he was of age to purchase GTA by himself, odds are that still won't make his parents want him to buy it. Some parents are strict like that, and age does not necessarily make you more responsible.

True, but when it comes to violent video games, most kids aren't half as dumb as their parents think they are..

Actually they are that dumb. However this is not a case of each generation of kids are getting smarter and smarter, as opposed to each generation of parenting is getting dumber and dumber.

Ah this thread brings back memories of being a young man and trying to convince my parents to get Resident Evil... Good times...

I waited until I was old enough, and I turned out alright.

Just wait until you are old enough, if you do manage to get the game it will just give those "anti-video game" crazies some more ammo for their "cause".
