I haven't played many horror games, so maybe I didn't know what I was getting myself into when I got Yume Nikki

I spoiled the "Uboa" event for myself, so even though I was still hesitant to activate it, it wasn't that bad. However I had no idea there was another "shock" scare in this game (spoilers for Yume Nikki): www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9-cebTMpVE

When I saw the Stair-rail lover I was really hesitant to walk past it but I shrugged it off and realized it was nothing, but then I get to the FACE and I immediately shut the game down, I was scared something was going to pop out.

So yea, anyone else immediately shut there game off at a scare?

I've never done that. I find a few games truly scary, but I've never shut them down because I was too scared.

I was playing Silent Hill 2 when I was a little kid (I was in 4th grade or something) and it scared the living hell out of me.

Only happened to me once in my life. It was Hexen for N64 (or Hexen 2 maybe?). The first level was dark and there was fierce lightning and I instantly turned my N64 off because I was so frightened.

I've almost had that happen with the original dead space for some reason. There was this one level where I was progressing through a lab and all of a sudden the lights went out...it was dead silence until this speaker suddenly went on blasting area contaminated and these reddish-orangish lights started flashing.... and I as slowly walked forward a necromaph suddently popped up in front of me...it really freaked me out but I didn't want to immediately shut of my xbox because I didn't want to lose all that save data...plus it was scary but i guess that why I love horror games so much :P

I didn't turn the game off, but I did walk away from it for awhile in RE4 when you reach the closet that obviously has something struggling inside it. I got so freaked out I couldn't open it for like twenty minutes and then when I did I was disappointed.

The Corprus monster in some Ald'rhun house in Morrowind scared the hell out of me. Walking into that strange, empty little hut on the outskirts of town, finding it completely empty yet hearing scratching and moaning from behind a tightly locked door. Of course, I had to use my unlocking scroll on it and get WTFPWNED by a freaky-looking abomination. It wasn't even intended to be that frightening, but I've never been scared by anything else in a game. Eternal Darkness, Resident Evil, what have you, they don't faze me one bit.

Fear with the little girl, and the wierd sounds you heard all the time...

I've been gaming since '90 and I never got scared...I mean really scared playing anything till I played F.E.A.R (aptly named game if there ever was one) - that demonic little girl popped up just as I reached the top of a ladder and I nearly wet my pants..LMAO. Only other game recently was 'Amnesia: The Dark Descent'. Now that was well done, some genuine scares there... especially since you don't have any weapons to defend yourself, just your wits and luck. It's only $9.99 on Steam...well worth the price of admission.

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth had me terrified the last time I played it. The town of Innsmouth was scary as hell. Sneaking through a back alley, looking through a window and seeing someone hang themselves...

No, can't say that I have. The darker, the more unsettling the better. I guess it is just because I love horror in general, but still have yet to really experience something that I feel would be truly horrific in a game. By that, I mean something that seems to transcend comprehension in the truly alien or otherworldly sense of being beyond what would typically be defined as good or evil in human terms, and is pure chaos by it's very nature.

That level of unknown is what I would consider to be 'scary' and hope that someday someone is able to nail that sort of presence and atmosphere in a game. You know, something that leaves you feeling unsure or uncertain of just what you were dealing with, even after the experience is over. Something that suspends disbelief and creates the feeling of having a brush the otherworldly and truly unnameable. Something that seems to cause pure madness by it's very presence.

Hmm then I suggest playing Amnesia or Penumbra: Overture since those games are inspired by H.P. Lovecraft's works.

I guess my one and only "Nope" moment in my life was a few years back when attempting to play Condemned solo. I was busy playing the school level and when I got to the part where I had to zoom in on certain evidence I just got scared sh*tless by what happened next so I pretty much quit the game right after that lol.

Actually yes. It was Amnesia: Dark Descent

Probably the scariest game I've ever played. For example, in Dead Space, you kinda control situation with your guns and skills, but in Amnesia, it's only you, and the dark :) I've shut it down in like 15 minutes, because it was half past midnight, and though I didn't see anything particular that scared me, the atmosphere was tense, and I didn't like it, where it was leading :D

Btw, I let a scream in Alan Wake, when the taken came from behind me. Though I was just starting to play it :D

Sanitarium is a point 'n click psychological-horror game with a beautiful, detailed izometric view. It's a general ride trough a mind-*** of a dark world that'll leave it's mark.. probably the creepiest, scariest piece of gaming ever played, but at the same time, it's one of the greatest adventure games i've ever played.

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth and Fatal Frame 2 scared the hell out of me, but didn't rape my mind, at all, compared to how much Sanitarium did.

I remember how scared I was of a particular level in Doom 2. Remember the level when you first meet those fat guys with fireball launches grafted into both of their arms (Mancubus)? I was scared of those guys, their strange sound effects, and the creepy rock music as well. I was really young too, so I am happy my brother played the first half of that level for me :P

Well happy to know that I'm not the only one, although, I'm 17, I should have a little more tolerance for this

For those wondering the game I'm playing was some game made in RPG maker back in 2005, If you want to play it theres an english patch you could find on google, It's got a big cult following if I'm correct

Also it isn't exactly a gamein the traditional sence, There is an objective but it's finding these effects. Also the only hostile enemy in the game doesn't hurt you necesarily, just transports you to a prison of sorts, in which you have to teleport (or wake up, your dreaming).

It's more of an atmospheric adventure, you get too see a bunch of trippy things and everything you see relates to the main character in some way (she's a social shut in that never leaves her apartment, and she has freaky dreams).

Part of the fun of the game isn't so much beating it, but figuring out why the girl your playing as is such a wreck. If your into psycological horror games not so much for gameplay but for the story, then I'd reccomend it.

Yeah, the premise seemed odd, taking photos was your 'weapon' but damn ... it was dark and spooky and the first time that broken neck witch thing came up, well it scared the crap outta me (and my husband who was watching and saying it wasn't too bad scare wise ..... then the witch pops up and !!!BOO!!!). Played the whole game though, had to see what was going to happen. Good times! :)

Silent Hill 1. When I was a kid my oldest brother bought it andI thought I'd give it a try. I was walked around the city, followed the little girl tosome back alley way, the character was transportedto some dark alternate reality, and got attacked by some little kid looking things with knives. I paused the game, changed the cd and didn't touch it again for like a month. I still had fun watching my brother play it though.

yes the second i went up the stairs in painkiller BooH: orphanagae.. i was all hmmmm.. im expecting zombie children arent i.. well then *turns off volume* *sets brightness to 75%* there much better..

i still didnt sleep right for a week after however..

that was singly handedly the scariest thing ive ahd to play through in a game in a LONG time and id sleep with the lights on after playing it again..

im sorry but they should really give you more guns in that level.. chopping up zombie kids is SO wrong..
