I think that graphics are getting too good.

With all the detail and realism being put into visuals now a days, same with audio... it leaves very little for the imagination anymore and it kinda sucks some of the fun out of having a game with crap graphics like the ps1/n64 days... if you know what I mean. Before voice acting in games you had to imagine it, and you could make it perfect from how you viewed the characters. You had to fill in the visual details with your mind in a blocky, jaggy looking game. It had a sort of a charm to it if you know what i mean... Its why I feel the graphics of PS2/GC/XBOX were good enough and that this current generation is overhyped visually. Does anyone else feel this way? lol

I don't necessarily agree that graphics are getting too good. There is still a long way to go. But, I think gameplay hasn't evovled to the the point where graphics have.

I agree. I hope graphics would stop getting better. I don't really like too good graphics. MGS4 should be the peak of graphics IMO.

I don't know... can you imagine playing an MMO with graphics significantly better than Crysis? it would be amazing.

But then, since generally people pour much more time into MMOs than with any other type of game, it would just destroy you and your computer/console.

I totally agree! I remember playing so many games from my youth. They weren't the best of graphics and when compared to todays, it's merely a "cartoon" look and feel. The gameplay was amazing and thats what I think counts. I find that all the "real" looking games are a put off for me and I tend to play the cartoony games more. I just hate all the realism and I want more addictive gameplay :x

Some game developers fear that if games became too realistic, people would begin to look at the characters faces and notice how close to human they looked, but in a different freaky way and it would creep people out, such as their faces moving differently but still looking like humans...

Anyway, I don't know. There's something bland about games with all graphics no substance I guess, but something I dislike more than that is games with live-action cutscenes like NFS Undercover. I really, really don't like that.

I was never used to imagining pieces of the game myself, a game's not a book for me. It's just another way to have fun, so if the devs make a believable world(in different terms), I just follow up. The graphics, they'll continue to evolve anyway :| Fotorealism not far now.

Even with great graphics there are many games that go for a more artistic look, ie Odin Sphere.

why not just stick to pen and paper games then?

i have no problems at all with graphics getting better. games still have tons of personality nowadays. heavenly swordwas both vibrant and imaginative. new mo-cap technology allowed andy cerkis to apply his talents to the character bohan and come up with a monster thats more interesting than i likely would have been able to create.

Why stop there? If you want to exercise your imagination more, why not go back to playing text adventures or 8 bit retro games?

I understand what you mean, but I disagree, I like the better graphics, though I dont think they are necessarily important in a game being good. Im playing KZ2 right now and looking at it I dont really believe that graphics need to get much more better than this, there doesnt seem to be much more to do with graphics IMO.

Yes it did. Everything looked like cardboard cutouts. Just because it was pushing forward with 3D and it looked "good for 3D" at the time, doesn't mean it looked awesome or anything.

art direction and character design need to be as good as the graphical capabilities...or the replayability of the game is not as good.

but don't be ignorant. graphics are part of what makes games 'addictive'. they matter - on so many levels.

I don't care about graphics, aslong as the game is fun to play. True the images on the back cover tends to make me give a slight tip towards or against the game, it's mainly my hunches that determine if I might enjoy the game I study in a store and the description.

People said pretty much the exact same thing when the PS1 came out and everything went 3D.

When the next generation comes around, people are going to say that PS3/X360 graphics are good enough and are in no need for further advancement.

Can't agree on that. I can admit they obviously look bad today, but in the 90s everyone was blown away by how good the games looked. If you're old enough you should remember.

I'm definitely old enough and I do remember. I remember clearly hating the N64 because everything looked like crap with frustrating cameras (a single camera glitch drives me up the wall). I hated the transition from 2D to 3D. I stuck with my SNES until I saw Castlevania Symphony of the Night, which enticed me into purchasing a Playstation.

3D has gotten much better over the years, but to this day I still prefer 2D (or even 2.5D) games. I guess I'm just old school like that.

First of all, I'd like to know what particular game frustrated you that much. Second, of course the virtual cameras were unrefined: theN64 was the first console to ever feature adjustable 3D camera angles. It was cutting edge tech and obviously they were still experimenting it.
