But which one should I go for?

-I don't really have time to sink 50 hours into a game, so shorter titles are preferable

-It has to be a PAL game, so no Chrono Cross or Xenogears

-I've never played a Final Fantasy game before, so I'm unfamiliar with story/characters

-My favorite rpg game thus far is Phantasy Star IV on the Mega Drive. Something similar on the playstation would be perfect.

-I prefer turn based battle systems to real time.

Most of my PlayStation games are either racing games, 3D platformers or tony hawk games :P, I really feel like sinking my teeth into a adventure game with a good story and engaging gameplay. What do you suggest?

I don't know a lot about RPG's on the PS1, but when they're mentioned I usually think Xenogears.

I don't know of any "short" RPGs on the PS1, but I can definitely recommend Grandia to anyone. Since you're worried about time, it can last you over 100 hours if you max everything out, but you can easily beat it in about 40.

Try Koudelka, its a sort of horror RPG. Cinematics are brilliant for its time and story is great imo. Not too long, as its possible to do it in about 15-20 hours but im never one to rush an RPG as i like spending time levelling up etc. It also has turnbased combat which im more of a fan of too

It's fine if you don't know anything about Final Fantasy. Each game is astory of it's own, with original characters, you can just jump in anywhere no problem. But they do tend to be long, however, Final Fantasy VII took be about 40 hours I think, maybe 45. Just under 50 I guess, Dunno if you consider that too long or not.

The only PS1 RPG's I've completed are FF VII and IX though. And IX took me about 60, so that's all I can recomend.

Vagrant Story is a very short game compared to other titles like Xenogears and acts more like a older western game (its a dungeon crawler, you can find tons of items to equip yourself with, and it will show on the character, its focused on action) with a incredibly weird artst yle (the characters clothing is very questionable).

The story is also very good, the boss fights are great, the characters are great, overall the combat is the best in a PS1 RPG, and its very short. I think this is the game for you.

If you haven't played any in the series you may as well just start with FF7, its popular to bash it but it is probably the best RPG to introduce anybody to the genre and if you aren't daft you won't have any problems finishing it in under 50 hours. FF7 is charming enough that it should hook you in :) although I prefer FF8 myself but that will take you around 80 hours the first time through with out any help.

Lucianu has recommended you the best game on the console 8) it is however a bit on the tough side, you will probably want to have some tips from gamefaqs or something ready before you play VS but you owe it to yourself to try it :D.

sadly Japanese only, it does look and run better than the PS1 version , but its in Japanese only. the reason I managed to play it is because I played the PS1 version about 8 years ago.

the reason Im playing the Saturn version is because I know the story and dialogue , Im in it for the gameplay as well, and as far as visuals and frame rate, the Saturn wins (though to be fair , the PS1 has some better transparent effects, particularly in the menus) if youre stuck , there are guides , but if you played the game before, you will at least be able to play the game.

I havent actually tried playing it at all, just put it in to test the disc when it arrived. I just figured I wouldnt be able to play it because of the language barrier. I will have to give it a try sometime. I heard its not as good as the ps1 release though. That could all be down to the saturn not getting as much love as it should have back in the day though. sorta like the wii gets nowadays.

totally different, the Wii is underpowered, the Saturn was not. most likely it was just due to it being a port from the PS1 , meaning there was little optimization (it could work the other way around too, Grandia and DOA are better on the Saturn due to this) I heard the team that ported Vandal Hearts was the same team that did the Saturn port of Castlevania SOTN, and that port is somewhat iffy too (no surprise then)

also , another game to recommend is Breath of Fire 4, its a pretty good RPG , thats actually available in PAL form.

there are the likes of Lunar and Lunar 2 , but those are not available on the PS1 in Europe (the Lunar 1 remake is available via PSN for the PSP in Europe though)

Yea I suppose.. but the Wii may be underpowered but it is home to some absolute gems.. I mean I have more Wii games than I do ps3 and 360 combined. Same way the Saturn has a load of great games that people never played all because it was on the uncool console. I myself was a sega gamer up until the ps1/saturn era.. And at the time I was young enough to be swayed by the crowd. Nowadays I much prefer the Saturn over the ps1.

I prefer the PS1, but the Saturn is not far behined, and I find most of the criticism regarding the 3D visuals and price to be hilarious .

I've looked at the ones you suggested, and I think Breath of Fire 4 looks really good. Many people i've talked to have recommended FF VII, but theres something about it that doesn't really appeal to me. Should I ignore this and just get it anyway? Grandia looks to me like it really hasn't aged well graphically.

its fine trust me, Grandia is a very good game, and while I personally don't believe in the concept of games "ageing" , unless the frame rates are iffy , its certainly was a very good looking game at the time, and is perfectly servicable if youre into the gameplay (which is very fun) FF7 is an awesome game too , you could always go for FF8 or FF9 instead , which are also excellent games. and contrary to what someone said, I would avoid Vagrant Story as I found it boring, but I know it has plenty of fans.

Grandia still looks pretty good today, and has aged a lot better than FFVII graphics-wise. At any rate, it's worth it mainly for the great story and gameplay.

M3tr4nk0 speaks the truth , the game is awesome, the story isn't quite as "emotional" (for a lack of a better word) as the FF games, and its got more of an adventure feel to it, but thats part of the charm in the game. also the battle system is very good, I find it to be very fun, with the only issue being some pathfinding by the characters (I found it annoying my characters could not walk around other characters in battle :P ) and the visuals are just fine, the game looked great for a 1997 Saturn game, and the PS1 version also looks great , even if its duller and slower.

I'd also go with Grandia and Breath of Fire III.

Why Breath of fire 3 over 4? I've read elsewhere that 4 is supposed to be better. This is the game I'm leaning towards at the moment. Darkman2007 - I like the sound of a story geared more towards adventure rather than 'emotion' as you put it, but I've been watching numerous gameplay videos on youtube and theres something about it which just doesn't appeal to me, can't really explain it.

the game does have emotion , its just not as much as something like the FF games (there is basically one scene which could be considerd a romantic scene for instance). likewise the weapon leveling system and combat are quite innovative and fun. the game is also quite long, Im currently playing through the Saturn version of the game, Im about 60-65% through it, and Ive already played over 39 hours . so its not a short game. the only issue is that the PS1 version is not too cheap , the Saturn version is cheaper , but its in Japanese. its up to you.

Do you have a PS3? I'd just buy one of the classic PS1 games off of the PSN. If not, I'd consider getting FFIX, I think the greatest hits version is still at a reasonable price point. Forget FF8, it's not as good as FFVII, or FFIX. I'd recommend FFVII or FFIX. You don't need to be familiar with the characters, or story to play a FF game. All of the stories, and characters are unique to each game. If you've never played them before, it's a good starting point, as majority of the PS1 rpgs are similar to the FF's, but not the same quality. Maybe, something like Vagrant Story, which is shorter, and you only play one character, would be more to your liking. Other options would be Legends of Dragoon, Suikoden, or Grandia. I wouldn't worry about time constraints. Just play the game as you feel like it, or find it engaging.

[QUOTE="UniverseIX"]Do you have a PS3?

I don't have a PS3, only an original PS1. I'm in the UK, and we don't have greatest hits versions, only platinum versions, and they're no cheaper than the originals. Final fantasy games tend to be rare and expensive. At the moment, it's between Grandia and Breath of Fire 4

FF7 is an awesome game too , you could always go for FF8 or FF9 instead , which are also excellent games. and contrary to what someone said, I would avoid Vagrant Story as I found it boring, but I know it has plenty of fans.Darkman2007
You got bored with Vagrant Story, but found FF7 to be above average and FF8 (of all things) to be excellent? To each their own, I suppose... :?

Putting in another vouch for Vagrant Story here. Fantastic game. Great story, characters, localization, presentation, aesthetics, combat system, soundtrack, replay value, equipment customization, and did I mention the story?

I guess that's where we differ. Rather, polar opposites, though I still finished FF7 despite being bored to tears with everything after disc 1.

[QUOTE="Nismology"]I've looked at the ones you suggested, and I think Breath of Fire 4 looks really good. Many people i've talked to have recommended FF VII, but theres something about it that doesn't really appeal to me. Should I ignore this and just get it anyway? Grandia looks to me like it really hasn't aged well graphically.Nismology

I recommend Final Fantasy VII-IX.

I'm sure about the whole Breath of Fire III "over" IV. I've played and finished III and haven't played one second of IV and that's why I chose BoF III. I think it's a solid RPG with a lot of great things going for it.

Vagrant Story or you could try the famous or infamous Final Fantasy 7. That famous Playstation 1 RPG. I'll not the greatest FF Fan but I did like that game. Fond memories of Pizza and the Spouse. Playing that game....

legend of dragoon. I know its already been said, but you need to get it. its one of the best RPGs ever. it starts off slow and steady and only builds with each disk. it is really underrated.

Go for Suikoden 2. It has memorable characters, a great story and awesome music that has remained in my head for years. By RPG standards, it is fairly short (can be completed in 15 - 20 hours).

It's a great game, with a great story. Although i never figured out why Square chose such ugly looking character models (in the world screen, not the battle one), because the time between the release of VII and VIII is short, and VIII's character models look great.

After that, i recommend you get the greatest console RPG ever created - Xenogears (a story about the origin of Man, Cain & Abel, and God)

I have a PAL console. So unfortunately I can't play Xenogears or Chrono Cross.
