I been hearing alot about cloud gaming but I do not think it is viable future. I believe digital download has a future because people can keep the games, movies, and music permanently. Cloud gaming to me is one big rental service which would be utlized in the next generation of consoles. Hard copy would probably stay around because we can talk about a recent leak of classified documents was put on a CD and then given to the person in charge of the website i.e. Wikileaks. Digital Download would be a good alternative because you actuallly still own the software and anybody that says I do not know what the big idea is living in fantasy land. Doesn`t perlman now can get money of all others competitors like Gaikai which I believe hurts his cause because he has a patent. It probably going to happpen to the game industry to the music industry where digital sales are flat and vinyl is making a comeback but in a simliar way. Do you agree or not agree? Why?

You have to look at things from the developer's/publisher's point of view.

A retailer has a lot of influence, and they take a good chunk of the profits (something like 30%). Smaller publishers can't compete because of the high costs combined with limited shelf space. I've never seen an Atlus game at a Walmart. With digital downloads, you bypass retailers completely. That's why you see all these indie devs making downloadable games for consoles, handhelds, and mobile devices; they don't have to put up with the likes of Walmart or Gamestop when they can just go straight to Steam, PSN, XBLA, etc. The games are cheaper too. Downloadable games allow devs to try out new ideas, and have a better chance of getting royalties. That means better games for us as gamers.

I do prefer boxed copies. Unfortunately, these days, boxed copies have much to be desired compared to back in the 90's. Whenever I get a box these days, it's just a flimsy plastic casing with a disc and a manual that has less pages than you have fingers and toes. But anyway, when I want to buy a game that's brand new, I get retail. If it's been out a while, I wait until it's on sale on Steam (most of my games here are bought in that fashion).

Consoles will go to download games. Cloud gaming i think is a bit away. I think there will be a full download service, for the next gen consoles, were every game will be available for download.

PC gaming if i had to guess before 2015 will be all download only. No more retial.

I used to only consider hard copies an option. I love my Xbox collection. However, I have been attaining a large collection on Steam, and DD is much more enticing than it used to be.

Box copies for me. There just is no way in hell that Im going to pay $49-59 dollars for a file download. I understand the bombardment of Steam sales and convenience of it. Some publishers are forced to distribute their games as digital content (Frictional games for example). I usually find some box copies cheaper then digital but ofcourse before sale comes in. I'm a collector so that might contribute

Up until only recently I viewed digital distribution as an awesome alternative to retail. Now I just see myself leaning towards digital completely. It's simply much more convenient. This is for PC, mind you (Steam in particular). On the console front retail is still king as the digital distribution models are still half-assed at best.

Pretty much sums up how I feel... I'd rather have a hard copy.

For me, its hard copy. I think with a hard copy, your holding a piece of art, similar to getting a music album, its a piece of art. Also, when your PC or console carrying all that digital content ever breaks or fails, you can lose all that content.

DD and Hard copy are like cars and trucks. Cars take less gas but trucks are better at moving large loads.

That's not a risk actually. Steam or PSN and probably all other similar stores for digital content regsister the user accounts with the items they bought. So you can just get a new copy if you lose one. But if a disc becomes two half discs you're screwed.

More and more, it no longer matters. Sure you can buy your retail copy, but you still have install Steam and and activate your game through the Steam client. Such was the case with Civilization V, a total outrage IMO.

Since software is all licensed, the difference between the "retail version" and digital distribution will continue to blur. In fact, we're pretty much there now in PC gaming.

Good point, but some people, including me, dont have the fastest internet connection and to redowload all that lost data can be a pain. Especially since the PS3 has long install times. Also, if you ever wanted to show a friend a game you have, you can simply bring the hard copy over rather than bringing the entire console over.

True, but I also live far away from civilization. Thats why I usually order stuff off the internet and it gets sent to me via mail. But, if you ever wanted a game instantly, then I can see the advantage in DD. Both have their advantage.

Well, were not totally in the digital age yet. Standard retail isnt going away anytime soon and multiple game companies have said so. There are also a number of gamers that still play offline as well. So the age of physical media is not over, not yet anyway. Either that or Im just behind on the times.

I am not a fan of cloud gaming but I am a fan of digital distribution. It is simply too convenient to pass up.

  • Unlimited supply of any given game
  • Brilliant deals
  • No physical space is taken up
  • Easier to move around with a large number of games
  • No immense costs to develop and sell a game
  • If a game is lost or broken, just download it again
  • Old games live on

I am sure there are more points but that is what I can come up with off the top of my head.

Digital Download is great - with Impulse and GamersGate, all you do after purchase/install is register your License Key.

All of your games are playable from the Desktop, 100% of the time.
