Okay, before i get bombarded for being an achievement addict, im really not.. I actually dont even look at game's achievements lists 99% of the time, if i happen to get one that was 'hard' to get, i enjoy the satisfaction of randomly accomplishing some somewhat difficult goal. Thats just me. The ONLY achievement i really think every game needs is a hard mode one.

For instance, Mass Effect.. i played the first two hours or so on normal and the game was silly easy.. like just, ridiculous, i bumped up to hard, the game took on a much different life and i appreciated the mechanics much more and the game took quite a few extra hours, some fights took literally hours to 'figure out'.. i enjoy that in a game.

Then, case in point, Dragon Age.. ive gone through some fights that took me 3 hours to figure out.. and im nearing the end.. and just found out theres no hard mode achievement. again, im not an achievement junkie, i really dont care.. but when a game takes me dozens of extra hours to finish cause i slugged through on hard.. atleast give me the tiny little medal to prove it :(

Now prior to the achievement age, it didnt really matter to me, but now its taken on a different meaning, since they give achievements and trophies for some the dumbest 'accomplishments', then when you actually do accomplish something.. nothing.

Just my thoughts, but wanted opinions from fellow gamers. make fun if you must :P

Nothing wrong with enjoying Achievements. I love them myself and as far as I'm concerned they're the greatest thing to have happened this gen. I agree that it's good to sprinkle them well throughout the game so no matter which difficulty you play on or what modes you play there'll be some to get. Most games do this very well these days though.

I think achievements are a great idea, although I need to take them less serious. I don't go after them because I think it makes me awesome. I do it because the game is saying "See that thing there you can't do that". I just do it because I can, it's there to be done so I do it. If I can that is. Hmm, I think they should have something like a hard mode completion achievement. But I think they should also have a set of other types of achievements. But if you can't do it right don't do it at all. I think they should have completion of story mode or main quest achievements. Like 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%, completion, hard mode completion. But some games over do this, this just gets repetitive. So I think it benefits the player and the maker if they use some achievements to encourage using all the features of the game sufficiently and expertly. So if you excel in one area it awards you, and if you use a previously unknown or under-estimated feature. Well I'm not a game designer so don't take my word for it. Also have you tried playing games not made by bioware?

I can appreciate the importance of the evolution of achievements in gaming.

They create objectives outside of the actually story line of the game and give you something to aim for, besides just completing the game.

I like them so much I wish my ps2 games had achievements so I could find the motivation to challenge myself to accomplish them. Mundane, trivial, achievements, though, are far from necessary. I like ones based on skill, and a higher level of game play.

The absolute best achievement I have seen, or gotten, was the 10,000 kills in Gears of War 1 multiplayer. It was an insane achievement, but, at the same time, it wasnt something you could 'fake' or was easy, it just required the time. I loved Gears, by no means did i play it just for the achievement, but like, damn, when i finally got that one, it was like, BAM, nailed it. lol unfortunately, Gears multiplayer was a bit broken with host advantage.. then gears 2 that had a 100,000 kill achievement.. But it included AI kills.. useless. Not to mention Gears 2 was obscenely broken, even moreso than gears 1. I hope cliffy fixed the probs for Gears 3.

Achievements/Trophies are OK in my opinion, but somebody HAS to stop those annoying "collect 100000000 invisible things we hid in the most impossible places" trend.
