It's called Final Fantasy because it's the final thing they(the main people in the games) did. As I put it as, but yeah, it was supposed to be Square's last game.

In the mid 1980s, Square entered the Japanese video game industry with a string of simple RPGs, racing games, and platformers for Nintendo's Famicom Disk System (FDS). By 1987, declining interest in the FDS had placed Square on the verge of bankruptcy. Meanwhile, Square designer Hironobu Sakaguchi began work on a new fantasy role-playing game for the cartridge-based Famicom, inspired in part by Enix's popular Dragon Quest. i remember about this, squaresoft was oing out of business, then one of the devs came up with final fantasy... skulper34
When the first one came out, Square Enix had almost no money or resources left. They put everything they had into one last game, their FINAL game if it didn't sell well.

Final Fantasy 35 ???Oh well,since FFXI was the weakest selling and almost grilled Squaresoft because the costs had been too high...I´d say Ultimate Final Fantasy 36 Online :lol:
(BTW the FF Ultimate-Series is said to be one of the worst series ever)
