Eidos confirmed today that it's been in talks with an undisclosed company about a possible buyout.
Eidos posted this statement:
The Board can announce that it has received a preliminary approach which may or may not lead to an offer being made for the Company. Eidos emphasizes that discussions are at a very early stage and that there can be no assurance that an offer will be forthcoming. Further statements will be issued in due course as appropriate. In April, SCi entered into an agreement with Warner Bros. that would provide the British company with cash and give Warner access to SCi's North American distribution network. SCi also put about 171 million of its shares on offer in an effort to raise a target of about $118 million in additional funding. Later that month, SCi confirmed it had previously rebuffed an offer from France-based Infogrames (parent company of Atari) to buy the company.
Could Atari be back at the bargaining table with SCi for its most valuable component, the Tomb Raider IP? Is Warner considering buying the company outright? Possibly, but this isn't the first time Eidos has disclosed a potential suitor's interest to investors. The last time it happened, Ubisoft was thought to be the buyer. In 2007, the British newspaper The Guardian reported that Ubi was courting Eidos for a buyout. Soon after, Eidos released a statement confirming that it was in the very early stages of potential buy out discussions with an unnamed company. Sound familiar?
