Eidos confirmed today that it's been in talks with an undisclosed company about a possible buyout.

Eidos posted this statement:

The Board can announce that it has received a preliminary approach which may or may not lead to an offer being made for the Company. Eidos emphasizes that discussions are at a very early stage and that there can be no assurance that an offer will be forthcoming. Further statements will be issued in due course as appropriate.
In April, SCi entered into an agreement with Warner Bros. that would provide the British company with cash and give Warner access to SCi's North American distribution network. SCi also put about 171 million of its shares on offer in an effort to raise a target of about $118 million in additional funding. Later that month, SCi confirmed it had previously rebuffed an offer from France-based Infogrames (parent company of Atari) to buy the company.

Could Atari be back at the bargaining table with SCi for its most valuable component, the Tomb Raider IP? Is Warner considering buying the company outright? Possibly, but this isn't the first time Eidos has disclosed a potential suitor's interest to investors. The last time it happened, Ubisoft was thought to be the buyer. In 2007, the British newspaper The Guardian reported that Ubi was courting Eidos for a buyout. Soon after, Eidos released a statement confirming that it was in the very early stages of potential buy out discussions with an unnamed company. Sound familiar?

Your thoughts.

I would imagine Warner will buy Eidos up. They have been wanting to get into gaming in a bigger way. They own the rights to the Batman license and they currently have Eidos making them a Batman game, so it seems like a natural fit.

I hope so. The amount of bone headed decisions the Eidos brass have made over the last few years is astounding.

If Warner buys Eidos, I think it'd be for the better. No more controversies like paid reviews, leaving out levels for DLC, etc.

Warner could buy Eidos and have Monolith develop Tomb Raider. I wish. I would love to see Ubisoft develop Tomb Raider and reinvigorate it the way they did for Prince of Persia and Splinter Cell (Chaos Theory in particular).

I really think it's NOT Crystal Dynamics' fault for Tomb Raider Underworld's shortcomings. I think Eidos' bullying and questionable business methods pressured Crystal Dynamics.

The game itself was pretty good. I enjoyed it.

Only problem was that the game was rushed. Some technical problems and lack of content is what brought the game down.

Only real flaw in design in that game was camera angle, but considering how it got worse each game (TR Legend had pretty good camera angle) I'd say it is Eidos rule to make games with poor camera and Crystal Dynamics worked hard to match their sub-standard rules.

i think it will be ok for warner to buy eidos. i'm not a really big fan of eidos's games, but i like the hitman series, and somehow i also like kane and lynch: dead men, despite it's horrible controls. but if it was up to me, i prefer ubisoft to buy them. i'd like to see both hitman and kane and lynch sequel using the scimitar engine, the graphics in assassin's creed is just gorgeous.
