I recently noticed im addicted to Gamer Points. How do you guys feel about this? I know it doesn't really matter im just making conversation and seeing how other gamers feel.

Gamer points is one of the best Gaming idea's in this generation i think. It makes me feel i get more out of my purchases on games. Even if a game sucks at least you can get some G-points out of it. Overall it shows your journey for your xbox360 generation. What you have been through and how much experience you have at certain games.

Gamer Points are awesome :D

While Sony did steal the concept from Microsoft, it's ashame that Sony's "Trophy" system is better than Microsoft's original "Gamer Score" concept. I believe that achievements within the games themselves matters most, and not how many points you have earned on the amount of games as a whole.

Why make a thread if it doesn't matter to you or anyone else?

As for the topic at hand I guess achievements/trophies do add a bit of replay value to the game, but a lot of them are just item hunting quests, and doing repetitive tasks over and over again. It was a clever idea done by Microsoft, and I think Nintendo should follow suit next generation if they want to attract more hardcore gamers.

I like having scores a lot better than having like a few golds and silvers and like a thousand bronzes. Also, that constant sychronzing thing is really annyoing. IMO achievements are much better, but trophies do platinums better because other people can see yours but on xbox they have something like platinums called games completeled and games completed looks much better but others can't see it.

Yeah the achievement system was a brilliant idea that Microsoft implemented this gen. While I wouldn't say that I'm addicted to them because I won't play something that I don't enjoy just to get them they have definitely become a big part of my overall gaming experience. Playing games without them feels like something is lacking.

Im not as addicted to GP as I am getting hard ass achievements. Im mostly proud of my Guitar Hero achievements. There's too many to list, my GS is around 9200 or so. Relatively low and I would like to boost it up a bit.

I do think they are a great idea. I don't really care where I rank overall, but it's fun to compete with my buddy list. I also find at times it encourages me to play a game more thoroughly than I otherwise would. Haven't gotten to the point where I buy a game for the trophies/achievements, though.

Also, I think the trophy system is way better. It's just much more informative at a glance than an aggregate score. Your level on PSN is like your score on XBL, but when you look at the number of trophies you get a much better sense for how the player reached that level. For example, I have two buddies that are about at the same level, but one has quite a bit more trophies than the other. So you can tell that the one guy focuses on completing his games and the other just plays a lot of games and grabs what he can along the way. Also seeing the golds lets you know how much of that level comes from a person actually doing something difficult in a game, as opposed to padding his stats with a bunch of easy to acquire trophies like for pausing the game or completing a tutorial.

Never care about actual points, as anybody who plays more games will inevitably have more points. I do however care for completing the games I truly enjoy, or getting the most out of them. Sometimes when you feel you are finished with an enjoyable title the few extra achievements can keep you playing it a bit longer, thus adding some more challenge and depth. But in the end, completion % > pts themselves.

it seems like you never hear about people who care about trophies though. I'm not sure if that really is the case it just seems like no one ever talks about it.

I'm not bothered by any incentive gimmicks to play. I'll play if the game is good and enjoy it thusly, not otherwise.

I thin Gamer Points keeps people from cheating, for example i have like 8.5k points. Took me awhile to aquire it, I wouldn't even let anyone hack on my xbox for 2 reasons. Im anti hacker when it comes to games, it kills the fun and pointless. Also I wouldn't want my account to get banned in anyway because OF the G-Points.

Like a previous poster said yeah if i play a game and it has no Gamerpoints to achieve i have less fun playing it and it feels like somethings lacking.

I own a 360S and a ps3slim. I like them both equally but ive allways been more into getting trophies than achievements, although if i like a game i do try and get as many achievements as i can on it. But it just doesnt compare to getting a platinum trophy on a game i really love, like prototype for example, the platinum trophy for that was a b**ch but worth every minute knowing that i 100% beat the game!

I used to be the same, but I don't really care now. They don't have any use. I'd have rather they used GS as the currency for the marketplace.

I'm glad that Gamer points do increase the value of playing videogames.I can see that trying to get all the gaming points in a particular title does help to get your money's worth out of a game costing$69.00-$79.00. But addiction? I don't see how anyone can be addicted to gamerpoints or addicted to videogames (a real addiction?) there is no such thing is there/

Until then enjoy your gamer points.

I've stopped caring. I did care for awhile and it was killing my gaming experience. I would be scrolling through the achievements lists and rerunning levels, looking up achievement faqs, etc instead of enjoying the game organically. I make myself beat the game normally and then if I really liked it I will go back and get some achievements that I missed.

It's all psychology, designed to keep you playing, and playing - just like 'perks' and 'levelling-up' ploys in games like CoD... remember those old exeperiments where scientists got lab rats to hammer on a lever that, when toggled, would dispense a yummy little chunk of heroine-laced food? Well guess what kiddies - you're the new lab rats...

They are pretty fun to go for, but I hate how people can ruin a game just because of achievements.. Like in GoW my teammate wouldn't revive me because they already have the achievement.. :|

It comes and goes for me, but I've realized that I enjoy games better when I'm not trying to grab as many points as quickly as I can. It's far much better to enjoy a game at a relaxing pace.

I think it's was a good Idea from Microsoft, but I don't focus much on them.

probably mostly because I only do about 40% of my gaming on the 360, and of that I don't have a huge 360 game library.

The only negative side I see in gamer points is their inaccurate depiction of skill, time-played or "hardcore-ness"
