The .hack games usually only appeal to people who know jack or squat about mmorpg's. If you have never played an mmorpg then you probably wont understand terms and the culture. I love .hack 1-4 and .hack gu 1-3. They are really awesome rpg's on the ps2. They do not have alot of replay value though and are only good for a once through. I think .hack destroys games like dq8, grandia, tales of, star ocean, Persona 3, FF 10/12, and Rogue Galaxy.

I did play some MMORPG before i got this. It has a great story (I only played G.U. but the story tells you how the games are connected), great gameplay. I just think its a great series. The scores are so bad cuz it says more of the same... sometimes this is not a bad thing.

Should = yes, need to = no. If you like the game concept, if you can get your hands on all 7 disks, then yeah they are totally worth playing but there are so many freaking hurdles for newbies to jump through before they can experience .Hack i am afraid for its future lol.

In general the Dot Hack series has always been and always will be a fan based game series. It's best that you just buy the first game of either the original series or G.U. and then see if you want to become a fan. The games are slightly repetitive and thats why gamespot and most game reviewing sites and mags bash it so hard. Dot Hack is a fairly simple hack and slash rpg based off a online mmorpg called "the world". Due to A.I. Viruses the world starts to crash and it starts to affect the real world. I personally recommend you get all 7 games of dot hack but you may not like it. If you play rpg's for the story and not the gameplay I guarantee you'll love these games. Abanabdon (still have yet to get his name right) is right that they don't have much replayability, I've beaten both series basically 100% and with 175+ and 150+ hours respectively into the the two series I have no desire to even replay the entire series again. I do however go back and just beat the crap out of enemies for the fun of it. If you're into rpg's because of its gameplay style then I wouldn't bother though. Both series have specific qualities to offer but most likely I'd try out G.U. before you even consider playing the first four games. They are indirectly connected so you won't miss out on anything major this way and you can then enjoy the easier of the two series first. *grumbles* and for your own sake do not take Mistral's item collector challenge in the first series if you buy it. an extra 25+ hours of constant item synthesizing and enemy killing is not worth the complete collection of wallpapers for your desktop and for a message that kicks you where it hurts in the gaming industry...your self esteem. "Congrats on completing the item collection challenge...you play this game way to much...etc. etc. etc."

i started with the gu series a while back and found them enjoyable, but repititious.
