Is anyone else just not finding The Last of Us even remotely scary?

I'm enjoying the game I think it's pretty good for the most part, but it's simply not scary or tense at all. I found the intro surprisingly creepy and intense, but after that - nothing. I'll be wandering in pitch black surrounded by clickers and other infected and I don't feel anything. Whenever infected show up I just feel "Whatever. Great, there's more of them." A lot of the difficulty seems to come from trial and error too. If you don't approach things in the "correct" way then it's likely an instant death with no struggle or anything. I think that may be detracting from the horror as well. I am only 40% through the game though.

It's really weird that I genuinely do not feel anything during segments I think were meant to be scary. Siren Blood Curse took a similar stealth based approach to horror and that game scares the shit out of me.

I'm pretty sure it was meant to be scary. I've read reviews where people have said every encounter is really intense and scary.

Not particularly scary, no, but I definitely found it to be intense from time to time. Especially on survivor difficulty. Some of the clicker encounters can get out of hand really quickly. :P

I just decided to play on easy. I didn't feel like I was getting anything from the game being more difficult. If anything it was just more tedious. At this point I'm only playing for the story.

There's a lot more to the game than the scare factor. It's a strong story driven game that reveals the characters emotional struggles and their own morality. It's meant to have some tense moments or shocks here and there but I don't think they were trying to focus primarily on the survival horror aspect. It's just a piece of the game that is used to tell the story it tells.

..you are playing it on easy, where ammo and items are everywhere. The game is meant to be played on hard or survival. Of course it isn't going to provide with you suspense. You basically have all the ammo in the world. People put games on easy just to enjoy the story. So it honestly sounds like you are playing it wrong. Put it on hard.

I played through 40% of the game on normal. I wasn't enjoying the difficulty at all since it's extremely tedious and arbitrarily trial and error. I may as well play it on a mode that makes it more enjoyable and makes the story unfold at a better pace.

By the way, the game is meant to be played on normal, otherwise normal would be as hard as Hard mode or Survival.

I just lightly brushed a bottle with my foot and somehow that alerted all of the hunters on the floor below to my presence despite the sound being barely audible and not suspicious sounding at all.

Now I'm funneling them through single window and beating them up and there's a huge pile of their bodies. Game of the generation guys.

The game is more intense on survivor mode, but I do agree that there is far too much trial and error, as the clickers have no apparent pattern and will sometimes seem to randomly turn around and kill you.  The best parts are definitely the parts without clickers/infected around.

During that one part where you have to sneak through that graveyard with about 20 clickers around, completely at random for no apparent reason every single one became alerted I was there at the beginning of the stage then they all flooded in running past me to stand at the entrance. It was both funny and sad. It's so trial and error and nonsensical.

Played it on Hard the first time and it was prettty intense for me. It eventually got a little less tense later on in the game when my inventory was practically full, but didn't stop me from enjoying it. Matter of fact - it actually helped me enjoy it even more by having me scavage every nook and cranny to prepare myself for the next encounter, be it Cordyceps or humans.

Survival was.... let's just say, your backpack will be empty through out the entire game and we'll miss being able to hear (see) through walls.

Normal is the desired difficulty. If the devs wanted folks to "truly" enjoy the game the way its meant to be played then normal is the default option. Also you can't play the game....wrong by selecting a lower difficulty, that simply silly.

Well it isn't a horror game so I wouldn't say scary. There are some suspenseful moments when you need to navigate through a room with Clickers in them though but it's not exactly scary.

I'm not the least bit enjoying the game and I'm in the hotel chapter and I think it borrows heavily from other survival horror games as RE and Silent Hill. Every word I said about the game before I had bought it was actually true. I wish for Naughty Dog to stop turning games into movies and learn a thing or two from Ueda's Shadow Of the Colossus because that's how you tell a story through gameplay and stop making games with similar stories to ones we see in other media as TV and film because that would defeat the purpose of playing video games. I play games hoping I'd experience something obsecure and new and not more of the same. I'm afraid Naughty Dog's attempt at survival horror game wasn't good and lacked originality completely.

I'm not seeing how any of that "runs my argument into the ground" (whatever that means). Even when I was finding the game difficult I didn't find it tense. I just thought it was tedious, which is why I just decided to switch to easy to make the game a smoother, more fun experience. So far it has been.

Also, funneling them through a single window was funny. I wish I could've taken a picture of the huge pile of bodies.

That's what I did on the first attempt. I made it all the way through no problem and then unlocked the door, but I kept feeling like I missed something so I turned around to explore some more. Then for no reason at all the infected on the other side of the door started attacking the NPCs, who then ran back through the door bringing the infected with them and it all turned into a big clusterf*ck. Then every attempt after that one had clickers just randomly being alerted to my presence for no f*cking reason.

Pffrbt
Intense, or 'tense' sure. But not scary (this actually goes for the human encounters as well) in my experience. You do have a lot of options though. I've played through the game 3 times (and watched someone play through it another) and each time I've seen the same situations tackled in quite different ways, even taking entirely divergent paths towards the goal.

Not once through the year+ of heavy marketing for this game did I ever get the impression it was supposed to be a survival horror game.  Not once did I ever read any article where ND claimed it was a horror game.

The game is not going to be tense or atmospheric if you're playing on easy difficulty.  You simply have too much ammo and materials to make whatever you want to feel threatened by much of anything.

Though I do totally agree with the trail and error frustration.  Almost every segment with infected merely gave the illusion of choice in how to overcome the situation.  When in reality you really only had two choices: Become Stabby McGee with your shivs, or put an arrow into the head of every infected within a 100 yard radius.

I also tend to feel that despite the game having great writing, voice acting, and production, that the gameplay wasn't anything new or innovative.  In terms of actual gameplay, It's nothing we haven't seen dozens of times over

I was playing on normal for the most part and it still wasn't. Switching to easy just lets me enjoy the aspects of the game i actually enjoy better. The more I play this game though the less I enjoy it. I just do not like this gameplay much at all. Enemies are too eratic and too all over the place to make stealth reliable or even make sense. Half the time enemies just spot you for no apparent reason. And somehow the shooting is just unenjoyable for whatever reason.

I love the art, music, story, writing, characters, graphics, and atmosphere so much but god damn do I dislike this gameplay. I really wish Naughty Dog went a different route with it.

When I first encountered the clickers,  my first thought was "Clicking zombies?  Now this is just silly".
