Is anyone else tired of having games advertised way too early?

Is anyone else tired of having games waved around in front of us in spectacular fashion for long periods of time without set release dates (I'm looking at you, The Old Republic). I'm curious to know if I'm alone on this, but I find it incredibly frustrating when very desired games are hyped up over a long period of time. The prime examples for me are Star Wars: The Old Republic, and Diablo III. These games have been advertised extensively for a very long time and yet, whenever we ask for a release date, even just an estimate, the same old sound-byte is recited to us, "it will be ready when its ready". Don't get me wrong, I love seeing what developers are scheming up, and I am a big fan of the rumor mill, but when developers continuously show off cut scenes, gameplay, characters, classes, equipment, plot, etc. in an almost indiscriminate fashion without providing any sort of time table or expected release date, it hits a nerve. Some games are even made available for pre-order, despite the lack of any release date. It really gets on my nerves. Am I preaching to the choir or is it just me?

Depends if the game doesn't even have a release date, then yeah it can be annoying, but if its just a few months before the games release I don't mind some advertisements to get the word of the game out there.

Exactly, I agree entirely, and I am limiting my post to only the games that are advertised for long periods of time with no release in sight.

Yes, It is extremely frustrating. Just look at FFversus13, that game has yet to have a release date. This is too common for a lot of games actually. I would prefer they only start advertising when it is onlymonths away from release.

I agree. Especially about Final Fantasy Versus XIII. That game was first announced in May 06 I believe, and unlikely to come out next year. That would be 2012 at the earliest, which means at least six years between the game was announced and made. It is completely unnecessary to announce something so eariler. I would prefer games to not be announced or shown until they are coming within a year or year and half of the announcement. Of course, unseen developments arrive, hampering the developers, which is understandable; however, when they clearly know that the game is several years off, then they should just keep it to themselves until the appropriate time.

Yes I agree. It's like "oh cool they're advertising for this game, when's it out?... 2 years!? Wtf?! You got me thinkin about this game way too early and by the time the game releases I'll be over it".

No. The sooner you can get word out, the better. People who say yes have no real reason other than they're impatient and getting anxious for a game they don't have, when they've already got plenty of other great games they can be playing.

Im glad to see I'm not alone. Also I think its worth mentioning, in a lot of cases the long-term over hyped games end up falling short of the high standards that they create for themselves (Im thinking of Star Trek online in particular) so even from an advertising standpoint, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Not tired, but in some cases, I just don't pay attention to it. While I did watch a few videos of Diablo 3, I'm not following it as close as other Diablo fans. Same thing with SW:TOR and Metal Gear: Rising. I think Hellgate London and Starcraft: Ghost ruined long waits for me.

I'm more sick of games practically giving up all their surprises before they are released. MW2's campaign is a perfect example. They gave everything up in the coverage that came before it, all the epic moments that I wished had been saved. Otherwise I do agree with you on games in general but disagree somewhat about the old republic. That game needs to draw in audiences who will keep paying to play, they have to give as much detail to pull people away from their competitors.

It is a double bladed sword. The sooner you get the word out the better. Knowing about if for a month or to before the release is not good.

I am sure that there are some that like to try to learn as much about the game before it is release.

The sooner they publicly talk about the game the more the can promise something they can not keep.

I agree that it is a bit irritating, but over the years I've learned to largely ignore the preview section of gaming magazine and just concentrate on articles featuring on-hand experiences and actual reviews. I've seen far too many games almost completely change by the time they finally get released so I find it best not to bother with hype for games a year away or more.

It is extremely annoying. About a year in advanced is all I really can deal with. A year is enough time to get the word out.

I like it. I like following some of the games as info is doled out. I would rather read a little bit at a time on a game over a long period of time than have a huge blitz right before release. With the long-term, the game sits in the back of your mind, and you think about it more.

A little status update once in a while is nice, but when some of these developers start putting out videos and screenshots on a weekly basis - a year before the game is even scheduled for release - I get really sick of hearing about it and that's not going to have a positive impact on my desire to buy it.

The opposite is true as well: some games seem to drop off the map and then when they're ready for release I'm like "Huh? I thought that got canceled like...two years ago?"

only if I want the game really bad, like Last Guardian, I could care less about the FFXIII or GT5 delays though

Oh man yes! A month before release is fine but a promo movie two year early is absurd.

I know almost everyone hates it when the release date is more than a year away, but I'm kind of okay with it sometimes. I think half the fun of getting a game is the hype. You know when a game has made it after you spend months talking about it, then an hour or so after firing it up and playing, you say to yourself or your friend "This was totally worth it".

What I don't like is when the devs throw out a release date, then refuse to give us any more info. I'd rather they not tell us when it was finished, but instead every few weeks show us the progress they're making. I'm eagerly awaiting Heroes of Stalingrad. John Gibson does a bunch of interviews, so sometimes there'll be new information to be picked up and I'm happy with what I'm hearing each time. Then there's stuff like Saints Row 3, where I'm hearing if we are lucky, we'll see it at the end of 2011 or 2012? And we have no info on the game whatsoever, I hate that.

Steady stream of info please. If a game takes 5 years to make ship-shape, as long as I know it's not going to become vapourware suddenly, I can deal with the wait.

whats early to you? a year, a few months, a couple years? they get a few cheap ads in a few years early then they get the free word of mouth advertizing.

I don't mind at all, as we get treated to a lot more great game trailers.:)

Omg, BioWare makes epic game trailers.:)
