Is anyone else tired of the "lunch box" limited edition game cases?

Back when publishers cared (publishers actually cared?! Suspend that disbelief for just a moment), they would actually release limited edition games in classy, well-designed understated metal cases (see Halo 2 LE, Doom 3 LE, Perfect Dark Zero LE) that did not have a cheap, cut rate feel. Now with advent of the lunch box style aluminum case LE (those with cheap hinges, unpainted interiors, non-spring closures, etc.; see Prey LE, Gears of War LE, and the upcomiing Halo 3 LE), we will never see the classy LE cases of yesteryear.

Am I being too fastidious (that means picky for the knuckle dragging nimrods, most of whom are represented by the majority of the gaming population under 20 years old)? Perhaps but since they did do the classy cases before, why are we stuck with the cheap lunchboxes of today?

I'm not really looking for a fancy case when I look for a limited edition of a game. It's a nice bonus, but I'm generally looking for bonus content, perhaps some artwork, or some insight into some of the work put into making the game. Something that makes me feel that spending that extra buck is worth it.

I liked the way Bioshock did theirs. Just a normal case with the extra stuff in there.

I agree, I have some of last gens limited edition cases like Halo 2 and they are superior to these new style ones.

Screw you pal.

I liked Bioshocks gig, but the Halo LE I guess has a crappy disk holder, so the disks are coming loose and getting all scratched up... nice worksmanship (that means quality, nimrods).

Like someone else said, what concerns me more about Limited Editions is the quality of the bonus content. If i'm going to pay extra money for the game, i'm paying for "Behind the Scenes" DVD, artwork, original music tracks and physical collectibles. The hard casing is also nice but its not that important to me.

I think the way Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, Lost Planet, and Final Fantasty 12 did their special editions. They are all the exact same box, just obviously with their games in it. A very nice looking special edtion box with inside art, outside art, space for 2 discs, a cool metal feel, and room for larger/more books.

Well I've been playing PC games for many years now and I miss the days of the big PC game boxes, before DVD cases came along at all, with big value-for-money instruction manuals. The manual I got for Civilisation 2 was like a bible while even the first Gran Turismo came with a really good racing manual.

Then again maybe games now are too dumbed down to need any kind of explanation with them.

What about the Halo 3 Legendary Edition... it comes with the plastic helmet...big enough to put it on a cat's head...erm...two extra DVDs...costs twice as much...sounds good value...yeah.

It's not about value, it's about collectors appeal. Some people game and some people collect and game.

Same here. I just prefer normal sized cases because I have crazy OCD when it comes to everything looking neat on the shelf.

lol. The puny helmet is what kept me from crossing the border of hesitation to buy the Legendary Edition. If I was actually able to put the helmet on, i'd have gone for it quite easily.

What are you on about?

You call them "well designed understated metal cases" they just look like a metal clad version of a DVD style case. What's so classy about that? Even though I do enjoy the look of the Steel-book (that's what they're called) they can't hold much content and demean the term "Limited Edition". All console limited edition titles are weak in my opinion (expect for the Japanese ones).

I come from a PC background and own several collector's/limited/special (whatever you want to call them) edition titles, and the PC editions are way better than what the console editions could ever hope to pull off (expect for the Japanese ones).

These are some of the Collector's Edition I own on the PC (not gonna name them all). Google them, if you have the time.

The World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade Collector's Edition,

Age of Empires III Collector's Edition,

BioShock Collector's Edition,

Neverwinter Nights Collector's Edition.

Publishers do still care.

Yes, you are being fastidious.
