The older games were hardcore.. Crystal Dynamics Tom Raiders are generic crap wrapped in nice graphics and that's it!
This is one series whos popularity I could never fully understand. I mean, I understand the appeal of Lara Croft's appearance, but the actual games themselves, why would someone want to play them? The PSX games were clunky, buggy, drab, and just plain boring. And anything that came out after that is mediocre at best. Someone please explain why a person would ever be willing to consistantly drop $50 on this low-end franchise everytime a new game comes out? Who are these people? I want to see if they actually exist.Conjuration
Im the same I don't get it, its to boring uninspired and drab, I think the only reason people like is coz of her/it's body. I remember when a sequel was released and fans were complaining about not being able to look down her cleavage to well.

BTW if you happend to have played the older games you'd know that Lara looked almost like a guy. There was plenty of things to do and the game was thousand times more challenging than it is now.

Indeed the older games were much more challenging than they are now. Lara's boobs have little to no appeal to many of those who play and like the game unless they are a horny teenage boy. The game made one use their brain a thing it would seem some have no wish to do. Those who find it drab and boring most likely couldn't play the game.
You are wrong, the games were awesome until Angel of Darkness. Legend sucks I'll give that to you but I really can't understand how you wouldn't appreciate Tomb Raider Anniversary.magic_dragon
Legends not bad, but it was good because it paved the way for Anniversary, which revitalized the franchise.

LOL You make pulling levers and inserting "Stone X" into "Slot X" sound like such a stimulating brain activity. The only thing that made this game any sort of challenge at all was the terrible controls.
In my opinion, the first 4 games were fantastic. The games took an age to complete, had tons of brilliant secrets, and really clever puzzles. For those of us who had the patience to play the game, the exploration aspect was one of the series' strengths.
TR4 was probably my favourite as the setting was what I believe to be the essence of TR, with the pyramids etc. I prefered the levels which were deep underground in boobie-trapped tombs (as opposed to the City levels in TR3). At the time, they were also pretty scary too. Settings like the sunken ship and tombs with mummies chasing you from their sarcophagi, twinned with the spooky understated music made them all the more great.
The newer games (Legend, Anniversary) are great fun to play, but a hell of a lot shorter. This is mostly due to the fact most players need to have a hand pop up on the screen to let them know they are next to a secret door, for example. Much of the older games had me stuck for ages, with no clues, until I discovered a missed block or key somewhere. So the exploration has gone, and they just don't feel the same.
It's understandable, I guess.
So to answer your question, yes, but more of an old school TR fan!
I think you summed it up pretty well, Tomb Raider is a series that is made for those of up who love to explore a game and discover things. But what really made the original so fantastic was the atmosphere, it was about appreciating solitude and was almost meditative at times, so I can't help but hate the way that Tomb Raider amounts to "hot chick with guns and an attitude" in most people's minds. The way the game played out mostly in silence, only broken by the growling of a bear or a soaring score of string instruments, that was what made Tomb Raider.

TR1 was really amazing despite its admittedly clunky controls (it wasn't the first 3D platformer, but it was a really early one), but the sequels were bad. TR1 left a lot of room for improvement but the only improvement the series saw on the PS1 was the rounding of Lara's breasts.
The Crystal Dynamics games remind me of the pre-RE4 RE games. Shinier textures but they haven't really done much to improve the historical weaknesses of the series (the combat system springs to mind).
I'm going to have to completly disagree with the idea that the sequals were bad, theyjust wern't as good as the original. TR4 at least had level design as good if not better then anything else in the series, though I'll admit that TR4 isn't a game for everyone as it is basicly a love letter to fans of the series that compramises nothing. The combat system could do with quite a bit of improvement, especially against human opponents, but against animal opponents I don't believe too many fundemental changes are necessary, as the animals are supposed to scare the crap out of you so I'd rather the Lara vs animal aspect involved more tactical things like traps and such as opposed to special dodges.TR1 was really amazing despite its admittedly clunky controls (it wasn't the first 3D platformer, but it was a really early one), but the sequels were bad. well what alot of people find boring other people find atmospheric, my favourite game of all time is Shenmue which alot of people would find boring for me it was the most involving game i have ever played
Deus Ex is another one of favourite games, again which had average gameplay but it was about the atmosphere
the original Tomb raider for me is probably is in my top ten games of all time simply because the feelings i got from entering a HUGE chamber knowing you were hundred of meters underground, the scale was amazing and the Egyptian ghostliness of the areas you explored.
It was the feeling you were the first person here in hundreds of years and isolation, similiar to the feeling that Metroid games evokes
Plus the scaling and platforming while formulaic was very satisfying evoking similar feelings of prince of persia had in the past and in the remakes
I mean for me i consider it a better game than say Gears of War even though i am aware that gears of war has much better gameplay, its all about emotion and atmosphere that defines the best games
I own every Tomb Raider Game expect for Chronicles :x... that game is hard to find. But yea, I've been a fan since it was released on the Playstation.2ndWonder
I have it and beat it twice... You'd wet ur pants if you played the labyrinth level! and gallows tree manthose levels were crap!
Anyways, any person who enjoys playing videogames for the purpose of gaming, agrees that old TR games are better than than thetrashy, generic new ones made by CD.
I never played the old PS1 TRs, so I can't comment on them. But I am currently playing TR Anniversary and I'm enjoying it alot. It reminds me of the Prince of Persia series and Ico, which are some of my all time favorite games. Its not quite as good as POP or Ico, but it is close. And it is definitely better than other games that try similar gameplay elements like Bloodrayne and Batman Begins.
I tried out TR when I found TR Legend in a bargain bin. It wasn't the greatest game I ever played, but it was better than a lot of games out there. I liked the environmental puzzles, but I agree with above posters who noted that the combat and motorcycle sequences are not partically well done. The combat in Anniversary seems better. I like the way the animals jump out at you unexpectedly. Anyway, Legend was good enough to get me to ask for Anniversary for Christmas. And Anniversary is a great game so far. So I am happy to be playing it.
As for Laura's attributes -- they are definitely not the reason I play TR. In fact, they are the reason I stayed away from the TR series for so long. I used to assume that that was all the TR series had going for it. Luckily, Legend got good enough reviews that I decided to take a chance on it when I found it in the bargain bin. So count me in as a fan a Tomb Raider.

I think TR4 was the longest too, it certainly felt that way.
Yeah I guess you could say I'm a fan of Tomb Raider. I really enjoyed the first two games then for some reason I just kind of never got around to playing any of the games after that. When TR: Legends came out I picked up a copy for the 360 and really enjoyed it. I'd like to get TR: Anniversary.Archangel3371
I'm in the exact same boat as you. I want to play Anniversary but for some reason I haven't picked it up yet. I think i skipped TR 3 and 4 because I started getting into the Legacy of Kain series and enjoyed the vampire theme over the big chested rich girl theme (my taste in porn is the other way around)
Both TR Legend and Anniversary are underrated in my opinion.
I really enjoyed Legend, after not caring at all for the series since the first game. I have Anniversary, Wii version, but haven't got to try it yet, too much of a backlog. Oblivion beckons.SteelAttack
I'm playing Anniversary for Wii right now. It's good, but I liked Legend better.

I really dislike the level disighn in Legend. Far to easy for a TR game.

Legend was designed more like a standard adventure game with simple platforming just to get from point A to B and move the story along. Whereas TR1 and TR2 were designed to be more about the hardcore exploration than story.
I like both, but I do prefer the style of the old games. That's why Anniversary is great. It has the more modern controls mixed with TR1's hardcore exploration.
The Games are basically puzzle-adventure; i.e. not for those who do not enjoy exploration and puzzle solving - it takes patience, encouragement, and a fair dose of curiousity to enjoy the Tomb Raider games. Adventure like that was just great; I own 1-4 and Legend, and personally favor number 4 and Legend.
The only true fault to Legend was the shortness and the storyline with Lara's sister which was very poor in my regards. Otherwise the game was A+ and I think everyone knows it - a few more levels and it would have been fine.
Still I would not have picked the games up for their $50 - I bought one for my brother (number II) and was dismayed when he said he didn't even want it (mostly because he would have to get me something in return); I kept the game, and mopstly enjoyed myself before I eventually got frustrated with it and let someone else have it.
In fact I don't think I would have ever picked the game up again (which I did just last week for less than $2 in near mint condition at Gamers), but eventually found myself with an eBay account where a person can now find the games for $5.00 on the average - which in the end makes it very accessible. #1 has it's problems (graphically speaking), but I really enjoyed number 3 and especially number 4. Legend blew me away but in the end was just very short and I don't think that the mansion made up for it. (Reallym though, one more level and I would have been fairly satisfied - they threw a lot of ground into the individual levels; like Peru and Russia)

Her mother and not her sister? Russia? Khazakistan you mean?Play the game before posting!
Graphically seaking? sorry but the game istwelve years old and was impressive graphic-wise back in the day. The second and third were more challenging and the 4th was hard for any newcomers! The games were for hardcore audience as simple as that!
I used to be a fan back in the days of the first game (when I was a young man). I mean wow a woman as a main character in a game, it was unheard of.
Credit where credit is due!
RIP Core Design!zeus_gb
Actually, I have fonder memories of other Core Design games, such Heimdal and Wolfchild. I admired Tomb Raider for it's complete freedom of movement, but I really hated all that back and forth. Still, good game.

I remember completing TR1-2, they are drab and boring but because of the hype I kept playing but they were just dull, dull, dull oh and did I say dull, it's nothing to do with not being able to play the game...
